Making Movies DSLR With Recording or Camcorder

Howdy Folks

 

Wondering if anyone has had any experience of using a DSLR with movie capability for making movies.

 

I have a pretty elderly but still good baby sony camcorder which only records in 4 x 3 and uses mini DV tapes.

 

Seriously considering leaving that one behind on next trip and relying on the DSLR (Nikon D90) for any impromptu movie making. This would save luggage weight and carrying around bits which don't get used. My D90 will be coming with me anyway.

 

Only disadvantage I can see is that the maximum recording time is less but can't see myself wanting to record anything that went on for more than 20 minutes (sure you all know where I am coming from).

 

I have a handy travel tripod so supporting the camera is not an issue. Likewise zoom and focus which can easily be preset for short action movies.

 

Has anyone used the movie recording on D90 or similar and can give any feedback on quality any other limitations etc. this would be mucho appreciated

DSLR anytime, tapes sound so lame these days. 

 

Get Sandisk 64 gig extreme pro SDHC and that will keep hours of video.

I use a Canon 7d for my video rigs.  I use only a 32g CF card and its more then enough for my style of filming.

As I know D90 has a 5 minute record limit per clip which can be annoying. Other than this you will be fine.
