Buying a New Cell Phone in Pattaya

Recommended Posts

Hi, I hope you can help me; I'm not really tech-savvy on phones these days- they can do so many things!

I don't want to pay too much, buying a phone that has a lot of features I will never use. For example, I don't care about games.

So, I thought about what I want my new phone to do; and perhaps you can suggest something suitable for me. Most phones these days probably have all the features I'm thinking of, anyway.

Thanks, people!

1. Brand- I don't need a 'show-off' brand, just one that is good quality. I'm in Pattaya, BTW. I wouldn't mind buying a Thai brand if it's good. But it doesn't have to be Thai. Just good quality.

2. Take photos- 6 MP minimum, 2592 x 1944 pixels, autofocus, LED flash. And video, up to 25 MB.

3. Bluetooth enabled- so I can send and receive photos from my Netbook.

4. Voice Recorder

5. 'Sketch' Memo capability- so I can jot things down instead of forgetting them.

6. Time and Date display and ability to adjust those- I travel different time zones.

7. Alarm.

8. GPRS/EDGE Network connections- I'm not sure what that means exactly, but I think I'll need these connections to make international calls, which is what I want.

9. SMS

10. Battery Power Level indicator

11.Calculator

12. Ability to edit ringtone.

13. A user manual, if phones come with those anymore! I find them useful in figuring out how to use the phone!

14. Countdown timer

15. Stopwatch

16. Video- up to 25 MB. (I know I mentioned that before; it's important, especially when I have female company! :)

17. If email's standard, I'll take it. If not, I don't care, I've got my Netbook.

My old phone got thoroughly soaked in water; that's why it doesn't work anymore. I'm wondering about the SIM card that was in it. Do you know if it will be useless now, too, or if it's a bad idea to put it in my new phone to see if it works? Is there anything I can do with it?

In Thailand, I was using 1-2 Call.

Is that the best telecom operator in Thailand, or would I be better off getting a new SIM card from a different company?

Many thanks for reading!! Suggestions will be gratefully received!!

p.s. I talked about phones to a local (Thai) woman a few months back, she said there's a place at Central that offers straight-up deals, maybe she even said 'fixed price,' I don't remember exactly, but she thought they'd be more honest with tourists than Tukcom. Unfortunately, she's out of town now....

Does anybody know about this? The thing she didn't mention was what floor they're on....

Thanks again!

I got a cheap Nokia in Mikes Shopping mall for around 800b . It did all the stuff you asked for pretty much minus taking pictures and editing ringtones. I'm sure you are already bringing a camera so whats the need of one on a phone? After I got the phone I then went to 7-11 to get a sim card and some minutes. Will take you less than 30 mins to accomplish all of this. With all the stuff you want to do on a phone, you might be paying closer to 3000b or something.

Your old SIM should still work even though it got wet.

Just make sure it is dry and the contacts are not corroded.

If it flies, floats or fucks - it will be cheaper to rent !
