One soldier killed, 3 wounded during bomb attack in Narathiwat

NARATHIWAT, July 7 - One soldier was killed and three others wounded on Saturday during a bomb attack in Narathiwat's Cho-airong district.

The injured were admitted to a local hospital before being transferred to Naradhiwasrajanagarindra Hospital.

The four soldiers were riding in a pick-up truck while on a local duty.

Presumed insurgents were hidden in a forest near the road before triggering a 20 kg homemade bomb packed into a fire extinguisher buried in the middle of the road.

In a separate incident, two suspected insurgents were arrested in Narathiwat's Ra-ngae district by paramilitary rangers in possession of a 10 kg homemade bomb while they were en route to an unknown target location.

The rangers were on patrol when one of the suspects, aged 23, was walking on the road carrying the explosive devices inside a fertiliser sack, and appeared suspicious. The suspect said he and a friend were riding a motorcycle but the tyre went flat, and his friend had gone to fix it. The friend is a 20-year-old student attending a private religious school in Pattani's Kapho district.

The authorities waited until the friend returned, riding a motorcycle, before detaining both of them.
