This is my first non-European language too.

 

The 50 years I spent learning seven European languages has not helped with Thai one iota.

 

It's a great leveler :-)

I learn things for my own advancement not anyone else's.

I went to school because I wanted a good job.

I came to Thailand because I wanted to and I'll learn Thai because I know that it will enhance my enjoyment here.

Lowers the odds of being taken for a mug for a start, financially and socially - the opposite of burying your head in the sand.
