Two wounded in Narathiwat bombing of teachers security escort

NARATHIWAT, June 21 - One soldier, a member of a military patrol providing security for teachers traveling to school, and one woman passerby were wounded in a roadside bombing in Narathiwat Thursday morning.
                
The incident took place in Sukhirin sub-district and the explosion left a two-metre wide and 50 cm deep crater on the road.
 
Sgt  Wutthichai Jamrueng and local resident Pathom Thammasaro were both wounded, with symptoms including tight chests and ringing in their ears.
 
The device, explosives packed into a gas cylinder and buried underground, was thought to have been detonated by remote control.
 
Prior to the explosion, a 12 soldier patrol was deployed to the area to provide security for teachers. Police believe patrol was monitored from a roadside bush, by an undetermined number of insurgents who detonated the device when the army unit was in range. (MCOT online news)
