Just read a very interesting article about the crash of a China Airlines 747 in 2002 - eye opening about the (lack of , late or improper) maintenance practices - this plane had 31 skin patches - doubler plates rivetted over cracks and scratches in the aluminum skin. One doubler plate that had been put on in 1980 after a tail drag incident didn't properly cover the scratches that eventually metal fatigued to the point of failure and the plane fell apart at 35000 feet. Worth a read unless you are a nervous flyer. Their maintenance practices have supposedly been improved.
