Taking rental motorsai beyond Patts...

Was thinking of taking a rented motorcycle (possibly 1000cc or higher) outside of Pattaya, probably to Koh Chang, although i've heard from more than one source most of the rental bikes in Patts are unregistered and are nicked from Japan which could mean confiscation from BiB, is it the red/white plates i should avoid or have any of you ventured out of duristriction with no problems?

It's probably best to avoid any bike with a red plate. Your best bet is probably an ER6N as they are manufactured in Thailand and should have a white plate if they are more than 2 months old.
