Snow at Heathrow and Gatwick ruins plans of thousands.

The Christmas travel plans of thousands of Britons are in disarray after snow left Heathrow Airport all but shut.

Thousands were stuck there overnight and few flights will depart on Sunday. Hundreds more slept at Gatwick, as knock-on delays hit most UK airports...

...airports were worst hit, on a weekend when travel association Abta said hundreds of thousands of Britons were due to fly.

The BBC has received hundreds of e-mails from stranded passengers, with many saying they have no idea where they will be spending Christmas.

BA said "several thousand" of its stranded passengers were being put up in hotels but when asked if the company was confident of getting everyone to their festive destinations, a spokeswoman said: "We are in the hands of the weather."

People are advised against travelling to Heathrow Airport, which said "a few thousand" spent the night in the terminals. Just four short-haul and three long-haul flights were leaving on Sunday morning. It hoped to be operational on Monday.

Peace. :GoldenSmile1:

The knock on effect is going to be a problem. The backlog from yesterday and today is so big that the problems will go on far in to next week, even if flights resume normal service tomorrow.

There is virtually no spare capacity at Heathrow.

Clearing the backlog will be a nightmare.

Maybe more Gatwick flights to compensate.

I feel for anyone stuck there when they should be in Thailand.

Don't worry, you will get here.

did you contact your hotel in Thailand? Surely they know about the problems but it might be better to let them know.

It's hard to appreciate what the difficulty is. I can understand cancellations on the Saturday, when it actually snowed but since then we have had none.

If our terminally useless councils can manage to keep the main roads perfectly safe, why can't the airport operators do the same for the limited amount of taxi and runways that they are responsible for?

I see on the news that Heathrow has invested £6M in new snow clearing equipment in the last year. Maybe now might be a good time to see if it works.

Commiserations for everyone stuck in airports at the moment.

I got 3 mates s'posed to be fly out on Thai Airways on Wednsday.

My understanding is, if they are scheduled flights and if the weather is ok at the time of their respective flight. They will fly on time, whilst the delayed flights & passengers have to be given other slots. Would that be correct ?

Dont take this as gospel because i dont work for the avaition authority nor airport but i was told today my someone flying soon that they have to clear the back log of passengers first from previous cancelled flights . Tell your mates to ring Airline for confirmation and further info nearer the day of departure. Good luck and hope the conditions change soon .

Will do my friend. Many thanks.

This is what i have been led to believe.. Those that have been delayed will have to re-book their flights ! So not sure if that will give them any sort of priority over passengers that are still going to be on schedule.

I saw a feature on the swedish TV4 regarding the weatherchaos in central europe and they interviewed the most uncanny Bitch Controller look-a-like on Frankfurt airport. Gimme some time and try to dig out the clip!

On the other hand, the only good thing about living in the cold, dark north is that the preparation for snow on Stockholm-Arlanda Airport is second to none in the world!

They clear one landingstrip with 6 snowploughs in a row followed by a truck distributing a salt mix to thaw the leftovers while the planes take-off and land on the other strips.

The average delay so far is 30 mins.
