Seven Troop by Andy McNab.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand..

They were like a band of brothers...

In 1983 Andy McNab was assigned to B Squadron, one of the four Sabre Squadrons of the SAS, and within it to Air Troop, otherwise known as SEVEN TROOP.

This is Andy McNab's gripping account of the time he served in the company of a remarkable group of men, from the day, freshly badged, he joined them in the Malayan Jungle, to the day, ten years later, that he handed in his sand coloured beret and started a new life.
The links they forged then bound them inextricably together, but the things they saw and did during that time would take them all to breaking point and some beyond, in the years that were to follow.
He who dares doesn't always win...

Sink the Belgrano by Mike Rossiter.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand..

On the evening of 30 March, 1982, Commander David Hall, chief engineer of the British nuclear submarine HMS Conqueror received a telephone call giving him the order to 'store for war'.
At first he didn't believe it. In the early hours of 2 April, Argentine forces invaded the Falkland Isles.

The sinking of the Belgrano was one of the most dramatic moments of the Falklands conflict.
For many it signalled Britain's entry into the war and it has been seen as a politically motivated decision deliberately designed to take the country irrevocably into the fight.
Now Mike Rossiter, with unprecedented access to sailors from the Belgrano and HMS Conqueror, gives us a dramatic and definitive retelling of the events that led up to the sinking.

With all the pace and tension of a thriller, Sink the Belgrano takes us inside the battle for the South Atlantic and shows us the human drama behind the famous, and controversial, News headline 'Gotcha?'
We track the collision course between the British submarine Conqueror and the Argentine warship, as the two sides and everyone aboard head towards the climactic moment just outside the exclusion zone set up by the British around the Falkland Isles.
We witness the behind the scenes arguments, discussions and power broking that led to the decision to fire the three torpedoes.
And, for the first time, we hear from the sailors on both sides the personal testimony of the hunt for and attack on the Belgrano, and from the Argentine side the experience of being under attack and the sinking that left 340 members of her crew dead.

Meditations by Marcus Aurelius.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand..

Written in Greek, without any intention of publication, by the only Roman emperor who was also a philosopher, the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180) offer a remarkable series of challenging spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the emperor struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe.

Ranging from doubt and despair to conviction and exaltation, they cover such diverse topics as the nature of moral virtue, human rationality, divine providence, and Marcus' own emotions.

But while the Meditations were composed to provide personal consolation and encouragement, in developing his beliefs Marcus Aurelius also created one of the greatest of all works of philosophy: a timeless collection of extended meditations and short aphorisms that has been consulted and admired by statesmen, thinkers and readers through the centuries.

Desert Royal by Jean P. Sasson.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand..

Readers of Princess Sultana's extraordinary autobiography, Princess, were gripped by her powerful indictment of women's lives within the royal family of Saudi Arabia.
In Desert Royal she continues her story at a period of crisis in her life when she reveals her shameful secret, especially so in a Muslim country where alcohol is forbidden, that she has a drinking problem.
The forced marriage of her niece to a cruel and depraved older man, and her discovery of the harem of sex slaves kept by another cousin, makes her more determined than ever to defend the rights of women in her country.
Her cause is given an extra sense of urgency against the backdrop of increased dissent against the Al Sa'uds, and the looming spectre of Islamic Fundamentalism.

The Last Continent: by Terry Pratchett.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand..

'Anything you do in the past changes the future.
The tiniest little actions have huge consequences.
You might tread on an ant now and it might entirely prevent someone from being born in the future.'

There's nothing like the issue of evolution to get under the skin of academics.
Even if their field of expertise is magic rather than biology. With the best and most interfering minds of Unseen University somehow left in charge at a critical evolutionary turning point, the Discworld’s last continent needs a saviour…

Who is this hero striding across the red desert?
Sheep shearer, beer drinker, bush ranger, and someone who'll even eat a Meat Pie Floater when he's sober.

In fact, it's Rincewind, a wizard so inept he can't even spell wizard.
He's the only hero left.

Still...no worries, eh?

The Hot Countries by Timothy Hallinan.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya.

Back when Poke Rafferty first arrived in Bangkok to write a travel guide, some of the old-timers in the Expat Bar on Patpong Road helped him make sense of the city.
Now these men, many of whom have been living in Southeast Asia since the Vietnam War have grown old and, in some cases, frail.
When a talkative stranger named Arthur Varney turns up, they accept him without suspicion, failing to see that he’s actually using them to get to Poke.

Varney wants two things: money Poke doesn’t have and a person Poke is unwilling to hand over.
It becomes apparent quite quickly that there’s nothing Varney won’t do to secure his goals.
As his actions threaten the foundation of Poke’s life in Thailand, the aging men of the Expat Bar discover that they might still be a force to reckon with.

Pizza Pilgrims: Recipes from the Backstreets of Italy
by Thom Elliot, James Elliot.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya.

Pizza Pilgrims is the brainchild of James and Thom Elliot who decided to give up their 'proper' jobs to follow a dream. Excited by the burgeoning street food movement in London, they decided to travel 4,000km around Italy in their Ape three wheeler van, meeting food producers, top chefs and passionate local cooks, to uncover the best kept Secrets of pizza making and bring them home.
Armed with their Italian foodie knowledge, they set up shop (or van) in Berwick Street market in Soho selling incredible takeaway pizzas at a reasonable price.
Since then they’ve garnered five star reviews for their food, opened a pop up restaurant, which was an instant sell out and fed a host of hungry festival goers throughout the summer.

This book shows how to make the best pizzas ever, from the simple but revered Neapolitan margherita to saltimbocca (pizza sandwiches) and pizza nduja (pizza topped with a spicy pork sausage).
Pizza Pilgrims focuses on the key ingredients and techniques that will make your pizza stand out from the crowd as well as showcasing other cherished Italian recipes from the brothers; Peperonata on bruschetta, Tuscan chicken with green olives, the cheese farmer’s wife’s Cacio Fiore ravioli, vanilla ice cream three ways and many, many more.
James and Thom’s enthusiasm for Italian food is addictive and this is a cookbook to inspire and to have fun with.

The Putin Interviews: Oliver Stone interviews Vladimir Putin.
*****Would anyone believe I saw Oliver Stone in a purple wig in X-zone, Walking Street one night a few years ago?*****

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya..

“If Vladimir Putin is indeed the great enemy of the United States, then at least we should try to understand him.” —Oliver Stone

Academy Award winner Oliver Stone was able to secure what journalists, news organizations, and even other world leaders have long coveted: extended, unprecedented access to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Putin Interviews are culled from more than a dozen interviews with Putin over a two-year span.
Never before has the Russian leader spoken in such depth or at such length with a Western interviewer.
No topics are off limits in the interviews, which first occurred during Stone's trips to meet with NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in Moscow and most recently after the election of President Donald Trump.

Prodded by Stone, Putin discusses relations between the United States and Russia, allegations of interference in the US election, and Russia's involvement with conflicts in Syria, Ukraine, and elsewhere across the globe.
Putin speaks about his rise to power and details his relationships with Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump.
The exchanges are personal, provocative, and at times surreal.
At one point, Stone asks, 'Why did Russia hack the election?'; at another, Stone introduces him to Stanley Kubrick's 1964 Cold War satire Dr. Strangelove, which the two watch together.

Stone has interviewed controversial world leaders before, including Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, and Benjamin Netanyahu.
But The Putin Interviews, in its unmediated access to one of the most enigmatic and powerful men in the world, can only be compared to the series of conversations between David Frost and Richard Nixon we now refer to as 'The Nixon Interviews' of 1977.
The book will also contain references and sources that give readers a deeper understanding of the topics covered in the interviews and make for a more robust reading experience.

All That Man Is by David Szalay.

Traded In recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse / Pattaya, Thailand.

A magnificent and ambitiously conceived portrait of contemporary life, by a genius of realism.

Nine men.
Each of them at a different stage in life, each of them away from home, and each of them striving in the suburbs of Prague, in an overdeveloped Alpine village, beside a Belgian motorway, in a dingy Cyprus hotel to understand what it means to be alive, here and now.
Tracing a dramatic arc from the spring of youth to the winter of old age, the ostensibly separate narratives of All That Man Is aggregate into a picture of a single shared existence, a picture that interrogates the state of modern manhood while bringing to life, unforgettably, the physical and emotional terrain of an increasingly globalized Europe.
And so these nine lives form an ingenious and new kind of novel, in which David Szalay expertly plots a dark predicament for the twenty first-century man.

Dark and disturbing, but also often wickedly and uproariously comic, All That Man Is is notable for the acute psychological penetration Szalay brings to bear on his characters, from the working class ex grunt to the pompous college student, the middle aged loser to the Russian oligarch.
Steadily and mercilessly, as this brilliantly conceived book progresses, the protagonist at the center of each chapter is older than the last one, it gets colder out, and All That Man Is gathers exquisite power.
Szalay is a writer of supreme gifts a master of a new kind of realism that vibrates with detail, intelligence, relevance, and devastating pathos.

Hardship Posting Vol 3: True Tales of Expat Misadventure in Asia by Stu Lloyd.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya..

A fun, hilarious account of trips throughout Asia.
Very entertaining with tons of crazy stories, and true to life accounts.
It is not your typical travel book, but does give a lot of tips about frustration, patience, sanitation, and an insight on how not all things are 'western' in thought and practice.
If you are single, a lot of information about the 'bar scene survival'.
Very enjoyable.
