Not all angels are heaven sent.
I am one such angel, and I have come to pass judgement on the living, and the dead.

A report of a rare and unusual gun, a type favoured by assassins, being smuggled into the country sparks Detective Harry Hole's interest.
Then a former WW2 Nazi sympathizer is found with his throat cut.
Next, someone close to Harry is murdered.
Why had she been trying to reach Harry on the night she was killed?

As Harry's investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that the killer is hell bent on serving his own justice.
And while the link between the cases remains a mystery, one thing is certain: he must be stopped.

In 1992, in peaceful Southern Sweden, Louise Akerblom, an estate agent, pillar of the Methodist church, wife and mother, disappears.
There is no explanation and no motive.
Inspector Wallander and his team are called in to investigate.

As Inspector Wallander is introduced to this missing person's case he has a gut feeling that the victim will never be found alive, but he has no idea how far he will have to go in search of the killer.
In South Africa, Nelson Mandela has made his long walk to freedom, setting in train the country's painful journey towards the end of the apartheid.
Wallander and his colleagues find themselves caught up in a complex web involving renegade members of South Africa's secret service and a former KGB agent, all of whom are set upon halting Mandela's rise to power.

Faced with an increasingly globalised world in which international terrorism knows no national borders, Wallander must prevent a hideous crime that means to dam the tide of history.

Birds and People; Hardcover – 2013 by Mark Cocker.
Large Coffee table book.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand..

There are 10,500 species of bird worldwide and wherever they occur people marvel at their glorious colours and their beautiful songs.
We also trap and consume birds of every kind.

Yet birds have not just been good to eat.
Their feathers, which keep us warm or adorn our costumes, give birds unique mastery over the heavens.
Throughout history their flight has inspired the human imagination so that birds are embedded in our religions, folklore, music and arts.

Vast in both scope and scale, Birds and People explores and celebrates this relationship and draws upon Mark Cocker’s 40 years of observing and thinking about birds.
Part natural history and part cultural study, it describes and maps the entire spectrum of our engagements with birds, drawing in themes of history, literature, art, cuisine, language, lore, politics and the environment.
In the end, this is a book as much about us as it is about birds.

Birds and People has been stunningly illustrated by one of Europe’s best wildlife photographers, David Tipling, who has travelled in 39 countries on seven continents to produce a breathtaking and unique collection of photographs.
The book is as important for its visual riches as it is for its groundbreaking content.

Birds and People is also exceptional in that the author has solicited contributions from people worldwide.
Personal anecdotes and stories have come from more than 650 individuals in 81 different countries.
They range from university academics to Mongolian eagle hunters, and from Amerindian shamans to some of the most celebrated writers of our age.
The sheer multitude of voices in this global chorus means that Birds and People is both a source book on why we cherish birds and a powerful testament to their importance for all humanity.

My Paper Chase: True Stories of Vanished Times Hardcover –
by Harold Evans.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya.

In My Paper Chase, Harold Evans recounts the wild and wonderful tale of newspapering life.
His story stretches from the 1930's to his service in WWII, through towns big and off the map.
He discusses his passion for the crusading style of reportage he championed, his clashes with Rupert Murdoch, and his struggle to use journalism to better the lives of those less fortunate.
There's a star studded cast and a tremendously vivid sense of what once was: the lead type, the smell of the presses, eccentrics throughout, and angry editors screaming over the intercoms.
My Paper Chase tells the story of Evans's great loves: newspapers and Tina Brown, the bright, young journalist who became his wife.

In an age when newspapers everywhere are under threat,
My Paper Chase is not just a glorious recounting of an amazing life, but a nostalgic journey in black and white.

No Full Stops in India by Mark Tully.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand..

India’s Westernized elite, cut off from local traditions, ‘want to write a full stop in a land where there are no full stops’.
From that striking insight Mark Tully has woven a superb series of ‘stories’ which explore Calcutta, from the Kumbh Mela in Allahabad (probably the biggest religious festival in the world) to the televising of a Hindu epic.
Throughout, he combines analysis of major issues with a feel for the fine texture and human realities of Indian life.
The result is a revelation.

'The ten essays, written with clarity, warmth of feeling and critical balance and understanding, provide as lively a view as one can hope for of the panorama of India.

The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution
by Walter Isaacson.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand...

The computer and the internet are among the most important innovations of our era, but few people know who created them.
They were not conjured up in a garret or garage by solo inventors suitable to be singled out on magazine covers or put into a pantheon with Edison, Bell, and Morse.
Instead, most of the innovations of the digital age were done collaboratively.
There were a lot of fascinating people involved, some ingenious and a few even geniuses.
This is the story of these pioneers, hackers, inventors, and entrepreneurs, who they were, how their minds worked, and what made them so creative.
It’s also a narrative of how they collaborated and why their ability to work as teams made them even more creative.”

The Animals Came In One By One by Buster Lloyd-Jones.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand....

W. L. Lloyd-Jones is thought of by thousands of animal lovers in Britain and elsewhere as perhaps the most skillful veterinary surgeon ever to have practiced his art.
He is known to them all as Buster.
Illness incapacitated him a few years ago, and so he has now had time to tell the story of his life, modestly, humorously, without affectation.

It makes enthralling reading, whether Buster is feeding lion cubs from a baby bottle, trying to persuade Sir Winston Churchill not to stuff his poodle with chocolates, curing J. V. Rank's wolfhounds and Great Danes of streptococcal infection, wiring a tortoise's jaws after a collision with a lawn mower, or mending a porcupine's nose while trying to keep a safe distance from its quills.

He has treated the pets of the great and the humble and the eccentric.
(He remarks that the Englishman's reputation for being dotty about animals is fully justified, and tells enough anecdotes to prove it.)

He has given a home to cats and dogs, rabbits, goats, parrots, monkeys, snakes.
During World War II, when pets by the thousands had to be abandoned by evacuated families, he bought a ten-acre estate where he housed nearly two hundred dogs and proportionate numbers of every other known variety of pet.

Today, confined to a wheelchair, he still lives in Brighton.
From his home he watches the dogs of Brighton and, he says, feels like Mr. Chips, knowing that many of them, or their parents or grandparents, were his patients.

Fugitive Nights by Joseph Wambaugh.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand....

For some, it's the pleasure capitol of the world.
For others, it's a city of last chances, a paradise on the edge of the desert.
For soon-to-be-ex-cop Lynn Cutter, sweating out a disability pension, it could become a point of no return.
As a rule, Cutter wouldn't give a private investigator the time of day, but Breda Burrows is the exception to every rule. Sultry, blue eyed, long legged, and tough as nails.
Breda can be very convincing, and she's convinced Cutter to be her guide through the glittering netherworld of Palm Springs, an explosive mix of silicone, Geritol, old money, and murder.

The trail begins with the monied socialite wife of a philandering husband.
The wife doesn't care about her husband's infidelity, but she does want to know why he's made a secret deposit, at a sperm bank.
What Cutter wants to know is the identity of the strange, violent man hubby is meeting in the desert, a man known only as the fugitive.

Deeper Than the Dead by Tami Hoag.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand....

California, 1985. Four children, running in the woods behind their school, stumble upon a partially buried female body, eyes and mouth glued shut.
Close behind the children is their teacher, Anne Navarre, shocked by this discovery and heartbroken as she witnesses the end of their innocence.
What she doesn’t yet realize is that this will mark the end of innocence for an entire community, as the ties that bind families and friends are tested by Secrets uncovered in the wake of a serial killer’s escalating activity.

Detective Tony Mendez, fresh from a law enforcement course at FBI headquarters, is charged with interpreting those now revealed Secrets. He’s using a new technique, profiling, to develop a theory of the case, a strategy that pushes him ever deeper into the lives of the three children, and closer to the young teacher whose interest in recent events becomes as intense as his own.

As new victims are found and the media scrutiny of the investigation bears down on them, both Mendez and Navarre are unsure if those who suffer most are the victims themselves, or the family and friends of the killer, blissfully unaware that someone very close to them is a brutal, calculating psychopath.

The Palliser Novels: Phineas Finn by Anthony Trollope.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand...

Dr. Finn, of Killaloe, in county Clare, was as well known in those parts, the confines, that is, of the counties Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, and Galway, as was the bishop himself who lived in the same town, and was as much respected.
Many said that the doctor was the richer man of the two, and the practice of his profession was extended over almost as wide a district.
Indeed the bishop whom he was privileged to attend, although a Roman Catholic, always spoke of their dioceses being contaminated.
It will therefore be understood that Dr. Finn, Malachi Finn was his full name, had obtained a wide reputation as a country practitioner in the west of Ireland.
And he was a man sufficiently well to do, though that boast made by his friends, that he was as warm a man as the bishop, had but little truth to support it.

Lost For Words by John Humphrys.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand...

Today programme presenter Top Ten bestselling cry for better English in paperback for summer.
From empty cliche to meaningless jargon, dangling participle to sentences without verbs, the English language is reeling.
It is under attack from all sides.
Politicians dupe us with deliberately evasive language.
Bosses worry about impacting the bottom line while they think out of the box.
Academics talk obscure mumbo jumbo.
Journalists and broadcasters, who should know better, lazily collaborate.
John Humphrys wittily and powerfully exposes the depths to which our beautiful language has sunk and offers many examples of the most common atrocities.
He also dispenses some sensible guidance on how to use simple, clear and honest language.
Above all, he shows us how to be on the alert for the widespread abuse, especially by politicians and the power of the English language.

Heroes And Villains: The True Story Of The Beach Boys
by Steven Gaines.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand....

The Beach Boys have been rolling, like the tide their great songs evoke, for more than thirty years, reaching professional peaks and tragic personal depths.
In this electrifying account Steven Gaines reveals the gothic tale of violence, addiction, greed, genius, madness, and rock 'n' roll behind the wholesome, surf-and-sun image.
Through candid interviews with close friends, family, and the Beach Boys themselves, Heroes and Villains portrays and evaluates all those who propelled the California myth, and the group who sang about it, into worldwide prominence: Murry Wilson, the corrosive father who abused them as children and exploited them as adults; Dennis Wilson, who explored every avenue of excess (including welcoming the entire Manson family into his home) to his inevitable self-destruction; the Wilsons' cousin, frontman Mike Love, whose devotion to eastern religion could not quell his violent temper; the wives (more than ten), mistresses, managers, and producers who consumed huge pieces of the ”musical pie”; and of course, the band's artistic center, Brian Wilson, the mentally fragile musical genius who achieved so much and then so little. With dozens of photos, Heroes and Villains recounts the bitter saga of the American dream realized and distorted and the music that survived.

Eye of the Storm: Twenty-Five Years In Action With the SAS:
by Peter Ratcliffe DCM.

Traded in recently @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Guesthouse / Cafe, Pattaya, Thailand....

Peter Ratcliffe served in the SAS for twenty-five years. Blooded in Oman in the 1970's, he also saw action in Northern Ireland, in the Falklands War, and in the Gulf campaign.
From his early days in the Paras to his time as Regimental Sergeant-Major in the Gulf, he has lived and fought by the motto 'Who Dares Wins'.
Eye of the Storm is his insider's account of that exceptional career.
Fast Paced, earthy, dramatic, funny, occasionally disturbing, it is laced with firsthand descriptions of ferocious and bloody fighting, sudden death and incredible heroism, and peopled with a cast of extraordinary individuals.
Beyond that, however, it corrects many of the distortions and exaggerations of other books, and explodes several long standing myths about the Regiment.
Here, at last, is the authentic voice of the SAS.
