Craig Bellamy: GoodFella by Craig Bellamy

Find this and many more in the SPORT section @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop *-* Book exchange...

CRAIG BELLAMY is one of those footballers you can’t ignore.
If he plays for your team, you love him. If he doesn’t . . .

Everyone thinks they know Bellamy. Pace and passion. A handful for defenders. Scoring goals and winding up opponents. Winning friends and making enemies.
Blessed with a natural talent, he has enjoyed a colourful career at a host of top clubs. The proud Welshman is one of the top ten appearance makers for his country. But his rise to the top of the game wasn’t easy. It could have all been so different.
He came from a loving family but temptations lay in his way. Follow the crowd or follow a dream? Join your mates in a gang on the streets or try to make it as a pro? It was a choice between the two.
Bellamy chose football and became a rebel with a cause. He quickly climbed the ladder and shared dressing rooms with some of the biggest stars in football – from Ryan Giggs to Steven Gerrard. His burning desire to succeed made him a winner on the pitch, but that same passion also got him into trouble. There were famous bust-ups with John Arne Riise and Alan Shearer, not to mention rows with Graeme Souness, Rafa Benitez and Roberto Mancini.
Away from the spotlight, there is a different side to Bellamy. His earnings from this book will be going to the Craig Bellamy Foundation, a charity which offers children in Sierra Leone the chance to fulfill their sporting potential. He is a devoted Dad and was heartbroken at the tragic and shocking death of his close friend Gary Speed.
Craig Bellamy: GoodFella uncovers the real man behind the player and reveals the untold stories of a life inside football’s fast lane.
Like Bellamy himself, it doesn’t hold back.

The Lower River by Paul Theroux . . .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop *-* Book exchange...

Ellis Hock never believed that he would return to Africa.
He runs an old-fashioned menswear store in a small town in Massachusetts but still dreams of his Eden, the four years he spent in Malawi with the Peace Corps, cut short when he had to return to take over the family business. When his wife leaves him, taking the family home, he realizes that there is one place for him to go: back to Malawi on the remote Lower River, where he can be happy again.
Arriving at the dusty village, he finds it transformed: the school he built is a ruin, the church and clinic are gone, and poverty and apathy have set in among the people. They remember him, the White Man with no fear of snakes and welcome him.
But is his new life, his journey back, an escape or a trap?
Interweaving memory and desire, hope and despair, salvation and damnation, this is a hypnotic, compelling, and brilliant return to a terrain no one has ever written better about than Theroux.

Here is a stylish thriller, richly characterized, wry and often laugh-along funny.
Taken to the Cleaners introduces the remarkable Miles Fiurlong - ex-art curator, ex-football star with a past.
Now he drives a limo in Queenstown, but not for long, things happen to Miles.
Enter the enigmatic Mr Ng on a mission and Miles is soon whisked to Sydney with bodies accumulating and secrets to be unveiled against a background of the art world, rare books and not so rare antiques.
Inspector Porteous of Sydney Police Headquarters soon has him in his sights - but is it for the right reasons?
And what kind of psychologist is the lovely Elizabeth? Meanwhile Miles, with his all too human sympathies and penchant for inventing lives for people he's just met, is off on a wild chase to Queensland and back.
It's wit and neat observations make this story more than just another mystery.

The Saboteur by Andrew Gross...;note, previously published as the Saboteur..

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop *-* Book exchange...

February, 1943. Both the Allies and the Nazis are closing in on attempts to construct the decisive weapon of the war.
Kurt Nordstrum, an engineer in Oslo, puts his life aside to take up arms against the Germans as part of the Norwegian resistance.
After the loss of his fiancée, his outfit whittled to shreds, he commandeers a coastal steamer and escapes to England to transmit secret evidence of the Nazis’s progress towards an atomic bomb at an isolated factory in Norway.
There, he joins a team of dedicated Norwegians in training in the Scottish Highlands for a mission to disrupt the Nazis’ plans before they advance any further.
Parachuted onto the most unforgiving terrain in Europe, braving the fiercest of mountain storms, Nordstrum and his team attempt the most daring raid of the war, targeting the heavily-guarded factory built on a shelf of rock thought to be impregnable, a mission even they know they likely will not survive.
Months later, Nordstrum is called upon again to do the impossible, opposed by both elite Nazi soldiers and a long-standing enemy who is now a local collaborator, one man against overwhelming odds, with the fate of the war in the balance, but the choice to act means putting the one person he has a chance to love in peril.
Based on the stirring true story, The Saboteur is Andrew Gross’s follow-up to the riveting historical thriller, The One Man.
A richly-woven story probing the limits of heroism, sacrifice and determination, The Saboteur portrays a hero who must weigh duty against his heart in order to single handedly end the one threat that could alter the course of the war.

The Loves And Journeys Of Revolving Jones - by Leslie Thomas...

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop *-* Book exchange...

A delightfully raunchy story... a lovely blend of humour, sexual comedy and pathos.
A rollicking tale of a Welsh sailor with a girl in every port, but only one true love at home...
Thomas has a rare gift for words...
This is his best book and a celebration of his robust talents, which combine flesh with imagination.
He always had a narrative verve, and this saga develops it into a turn of the wheel of life.
Revolving Jones comes back at last to his eternal miss, and hopefully, Leslie Thomas will achieve a revolution in his reputation..

The Force by Don Winslow. . . .

Traded in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop *-* Book exchange...

The acclaimed, award-winning, bestselling author of The Cartel - voted one of the Best Books of the Year by more than sixty publications, makes his William Morrow debut with a cinematic epic as explosive, powerful, and unforgettable as Mystic River and The Wire.
Our ends know our beginnings, but the reverse isn’t true . .
All Denny Malone wants is to be a good cop.
He is "the King of Manhattan North," a highly decorated NYPD detective sergeant and the real leader of "Da Force." Malone and his crew are the smartest, the toughest, the quickest, the bravest, and the baddest, an elite special unit given carte blanche to fight gangs, drugs, and guns.
Every day and every night for the eighteen years he’s spent on the Job, Malone has served on the front lines, witnessing the hurt, the dead, the victims, the perps.
He’s done whatever it takes to serve and protect in a city built by ambition and corruption, where no one is clean -including Malone himself.
What only a few know is that Denny Malone is dirty: he and his partners have stolen millions of dollars in drugs and cash in the wake of the biggest heroin bust in the city’s history.
Now Malone is caught in a trap and being squeezed by the Feds, and he must walk the thin line between betraying his brothers and partners, the Job, his family, and the woman he loves, trying to survive, body and soul, while the city teeters on the brink of a racial conflagration that could destroy them all.
This is the great cop novel of our time and a book only Don Winslow could write: a haunting story of greed and violence, inequality and race, crime and injustice, retribution and redemption that reveals the seemingly insurmountable tensions between the police and the diverse citizens they serve.
A searing portrait of a city on the edge and of a courageous, heroic, and deeply flawed man who stands at the edge of its abyss, The Forceis a masterpiece of urban realism full of shocking and surprising twists, leavened by flashes of dark humor, a morally complex and utterly riveting dissection of modern American society and the controversial issues confronting us today.

Kill the Messenger by Tami Hoag ...

Read this and more from Tammi @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop *-* Book exchange...

With this thriller, author Tami Hoag delivers her own message to suspense fans everywhere: Don't turn off the lights, and keep reading if you dare.
From the gritty streets of Los Angeles to its most protected enclaves of prestige and power to the ruthless glamour of Hollywood, a killer stalks his prey.
A killer so merciless no one in his way is safe - not even the innocent.
At the end of a long day battling street traffic, bike messenger Jace Damon has one last drop to make.
But en route to delivering a package for one of L.A.'s sleaziest defense attorneys, he's nearly run down by a car, chased through back alleys, and shot at. Only the instincts acquired while growing up on the streets of L.A. allow him to escape with his life - and with the package someone wants badly enough to kill for.
Jace returns to Lenny Lowell's office only to find the cops there, the lawyer dead, and Jace himself considered the prime suspect in the savage murder. Suddenly he's on the run from both the cops and a killer, and the key to saving himself and his ten-year-old brother is the envelope he still has - which holds a message no one wants delivered: the truth.
In a city fueled by money, celebrity, and sensationalism, the murder of a bottom-feeding mouthpiece like Lenny Lowell won't make the headlines.
So when detectives from the LAPD's elite robbery/homicide division show up, homicide detective Kev Parker wants to know why.
Parker is on the downhill slide of a once-promising career, and he doesn't want to be reminded that he used to be one of the hotshots, working cases that made instant celebrities of everyone involved.
Like the case of fading retty-boy actor Rob Cole, accused of the brutal murder of his wife, Tricia Crowne-Cole, daughter of one of the most powerful men in the city, L.A.'s latest "crime of the century."

Robbery/Homicide has no reason to be looking at a dead small-time scumbag lawyer or chasing a bike messenger...unless there's something in it for them.
Maybe Lenny Lowell had a connection to something big enough to be killed for. Parker begins a search for answers that will lead him to a killer - or the end of his career. Because if there's one lesson he's learned over the years, it's that in a town built on fantasy and fame, delivering the truth can be deadly.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas returns in a fast-paced new novel from author J. D. Robb.

Nature versus nurture...

The shots came quickly, silently, and with deadly accuracy. Within seconds, three people were dead at Central Park’s ice skating rink. The victims: a talented young skater, a doctor, and a teacher. As random as random can be.
Eve Dallas has seen a lot of killers during her time with the NYPSD, but never one like this. After reviewing security videos, it becomes clear that the victims were killed by a sniper firing a tactical laser rifle, who could have been miles away when the trigger was pulled.
And though the locations where the shooter could have set up seem endless, the list of people with that particular skill set is finite: police, military, professional killer.
Eve’s husband, Roarke, has unlimited resources and genius; at his disposal. And when his computer program leads Eve to the location of the sniper, she learns a shocking fact.
There were two - one older, one younger. Someone is being trained by an expert in the science of killing, and they have an agenda.
Central Park was just a warm-up. And as another sniper attack shakes the city to its core, Eve realizes that though we’re all shaped by the people around us, there are those who are just born evil...

Acclaimed journalist Ted Conover sets a new standard for bold, in-depth reporting in this first-hand account of life inside the penal system.
When Conover’s request to shadow a recruit at the New York State Corrections Officer Academy was denied, he decided to apply for a job as a prison officer.
So begins his odyssey at Sing Sing, once a model prison but now the state’s most troubled maximum-security facility.
The result of his year there is this remarkable look at one of America’s most dangerous prisons, where drugs, gang wars and sex are rampant, and where the line between violator and violated is often unclear.
As sobering as it is suspenseful, Newjack is an indispensable contribution to the urgent debate about our country’s criminal justice system, and a consistently fascinating read.

Jack the Ripper by Daniel Farson...
1972 1st Edition ..

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop *-* Book exchange...

Farson's 1972 book introduced the barrister Montague Druitt as Number One Suspect.
Actually - as is so often the case with this fascinating work, he put the name to the suspect that Leonard Matters had known about and dismissed in the first ever Ripper book (1928).
Farson claimed to have seen the famous Macnaghten Memorandum, a note written by the man who took over as head of the Met immediately after the murders ceased. Farson would have us believe that Macnaghten wrote in his official capacity, a summary document to close the file. Actually what Macnaghten did (and Matters proves beyond reasonable doubt) is copy out Major Arthur Griffiths' suspect list from his 1898 Mysteries of Police and Crime (Part 1).
Griffiths had overseen prisons but had never served with the police.
He did, however, have extensive police contacts and it may well have been that both Griffiths and Macnaghten got their information from the same source.
Was that source authoritative? Probably not, given the insistence that police inquiries wound down after Druitt's body was fished from the Thames on December 31 1888, when in fact key frontline investigators believed the Ripper continued killing.
Inspector Reid turned up at various prostitute murders well into 1889 and 1890, and Inspector Abberline was apparently convinced that George Chapman (caught and hanged 1903) was the Ripper.

Rabbit Stew and a Penny or Two: A Gypsy Family's Hard Times and Happy Times on the Road in the 1950s - by Maggie Smith-Bendell...
@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop *-* Book exchange...
Born on a Somerset pea-field in 1941, the second of eight children in a Romani family, Maggie Smith-Bendell has lived through the years of greatest change in the travelling community's long history.
As a child, Maggie rode and slept in a horse-drawn wagon, picked hops and flowers, and sat beside her father's campfire on ancient verges, poor but free to roam.
As the twentieth century progressed, common land was fenced off and the traditional Gypsy ways disappeared. Eventually Maggie married a house-dweller and tried to settle for bricks and mortar, but she never lost the restless spirit, the deep love of the land and the gift for storytelling that were her Romani inheritance.
Maggie's story is one of hardship and prejudice, but also, unforgettably, it recalls the glories of the travelling life in the absolute safety of a loyal and loving family.

Dope Girls: The Birth of the British Drug Underground by Marek Kohn. . . .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop / Book exchange / Cafe / Guesthouse..

As entertaining as it is enlightening, Dope Girls vividly records the scandals and moral panics in Britain that followed the end of the First World War, as drug use, especially of morphine and cocaine, was transformed into a national menace.
The cast of characters includes Billie Carleton, a West End musical actress, whose highly publicized death from an overdose in 1918 fueled public anxiety; Brilliant Chang, a Chinese restaurant proprietor; and Edgar Manning, a jazz drummer from Jamaica, identified as the villains of the affair and invested with a highly charged sexual menace. Around them swirled a raffish group of seedy and rebellious hedonists.
Britain was horrified and enthralled the drug problem was born, amid a gush of exotic tabloid detail.
A cult classic in Britain, Dope Girls remains both timely and instructive.
