@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop * Book exchange...

The Ancient Meditation Technique that Brings Real Peace of Mind.

Vipassand-bhavand, "the development of insight," embodies the essence of the teaching of the Buddha.
As taught by S. N. Goenka, this path to self-awareness is extraordinary in its simplicity, its lack of dogma and, above all, its results.
The Vipassana technique can be successfully applied by anyone.

Based on the lectures and writings of S. N. Goenka and prepared under his direct guidance, The Art of Living shows how this technique can be used to solve problems, develop unused potential, and lead a peaceful, productive life.
It includes stories by S. N. Goenka, as well as answers to students' questions, that convey a vivid sense of his teaching.

S. N. Goenka's Vipassana courses have attracted thousands of people of every background.
Unique among teachers of meditation, Goenka is a retired industrialist and former leader of the Indian Community in Burma.
Although a layman, his teaching has won the approval of senior Buddhist monks in Burma, India, and Sri Lanka, a number of whom have taken courses under his guidance. Despite his magnetism, he has no wish to be a "guru" instead he teaches self-responsibility.
This is the first systematic study of his teachings to appear in English.

A Leaf in the Bitter Wind: A Memoir by Ting-xing Ye

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop *-* Book exchange - Cafe - Guesthouse...

Ting-xing Ye was born in Shanghai in 1952, just three years after the People's Republic of China was officially created.
In her enthralling memoir, she weaves together her personal history with the larger history of Mao's China to create a tale both intimate and epic, colored by deep family bonds and the constant foreboding presence of a totalitarian government.
Ye's father, a successful factory owner, had his business taken away at the outset of the Cultural Revolution.
His death in 1962, followed by his wife's two years later, left behind a family of five children, a beloved servant known as "Great-Aunt," and the potentially fatal tag of "capitalist." In telling her story, Ye gracefully combines idyllic memories of her childhood on Purple Sunshine Lane with harrowing tales of harassment by the feared Red Guards.
As a teen, Ye was sentenced to a prison farm; the book traces her journey from prisoner to university student, her work as a police agent and a translator, and the love affair that led to her dramatic defection to the West.

My Life by Bill Clinton. . .

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop * Book exchange...

An exhaustive, soul-searching memoir, Bill Clinton's My Life is a refreshingly candid look at the former president as a son, brother, teacher, father, husband, and public figure. Clinton painstakingly outlines the history behind his greatest successes and failures, including his dedication to educational and economic reform, his war against a "vast right-wing operation" determined to destroy him, and the "morally indefensible" acts for which he was nearly impeached. My Life is autobiography as therapy--a personal history written by a man trying to face and banish his private demons.

Operation Mincemeat: How a Dead Man and a Bizarre Plan Fooled the Nazis and Assured an Allied Victory
by Ben Macintyre...
@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop * Book exchange...
In 1943, from a windowless London basement office, two intelligence officers conceived a plan that was both simple & complicated, Operation Mincemeat.
Purpose?
To deceive the Nazis into thinking the Allies were planning to attack Europe by way of Greece or Sardinia, rather than Sicily, as the Nazis had assumed & the Allies ultimately chose.
Charles Cholmondeley of MI5 & the British naval intelligence officer Ewen Montagu were very different. Cholmondeley was a dreamer seeking adventure.
Montagu was an aristocratic, detail-oriented barrister.
A perfect team, they created an ingenious plan: equip a corpse with secret (but false) papers concerning the invasion, then drop it off the coast of Spain where German spies would hopefully take the bait.
The idea was approved by British intelligence officials, including Ian Fleming (007's creator).
Winston Churchill believed it might ring true to the Axis & help bring victory.
Filled with spies, double agents, rogues, heroes & a corpse, the story of Operation Mincemeat reads like an international thriller.
Unveiling never-before-released material, Macintyre goes into the minds of intelligence officers, their moles & spies, & the German Abwehr agents who suffered the “twin frailties of wishfulness & yesmanship.”
He weaves together the eccentric personalities of Cholmondeley & Montagu & their improbable feats into an adventure that saved thousands & paved the way for the conquest of Sicily.

Paul dam Omnibus - Unholy Trinity & Shadow Chasers.
@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop * Book exchange...
The Unholy Trinity;
The death of Father Vivaldi, known as the Red Priest because of his devotion to the poor and destitute, seemed like the beginning.
In fact, it was just another link in a vast conspiracy that powerful, unseen forces will go to any lengths to conceal. Rome foreign correspondent Andy Chapman, investigating the brutal killing, discovers evidence that implicates high-ranking members of the church.
He turns his information over to the investigating magistrate, beautiful Elena Fiorini, and together they begin a hunt for the killers.
They find themselves up against the might of the Catholic Church and a sinister network of neo fascist fanatics.
Their quest leads them to the very heart of the Vatican, and back to the last days of Mussolini's dictatorship, when people changed their identities but not their allegiances.
A pulsating thriller of stunning plausibility, heralding the arrival of an exciting new voice to the genre.
A page-turner that artfully mixes contemporary politics and religion.

Shadow Chasers;
British Customs officer, Rob Sullivan, is on secondment to Brussels where a tiny unit from the EU's member states is supposed to tackle all excise duty crime in Europe. Much of his work is either boring or frustrating, but now all his leads seem to result in his witnesses meeting with "accidents".

The Other Side of the Sky by Farah Ahmedi & Tamim Ansary...

@ Canterbury Tales Bookshop * Book exchange...

Farah Ahmedi's "poignant tale of survival" chronicles her journey from war to peace.
Equal parts tragedy and hope, determination and daring, Ahmedi's memoir delivers a remarkably vivid portrait of her girlhood in Kabul, where the sound of gunfire and the sight of falling bombs shaped her life and stole her family.
She herself narrowly escapes death when she steps on a landmine.
Eventually the war forces her to flee, first over the mountains to refugee camps across the border, and finally to America.
Ahmedi proves that even in the direst circumstances, not only can the human heart endure, it can thrive.
"The Other Side of the Sky" is "a remarkable journey"

Notorious by Joey Pyle & Earl Davidson....

Traded in @ Canterbury Tales Bookshop * Book exchange...

The Krays, the Richardsons and men like Buster Edwards or Freddie Foreman may be better known to the public, but by the end of the sixties they were either in prison or living in enforced exile.
Joey Pyle was (and continues to be) every bit as notorious, feared and respected.
His broad range of criminal contacts and associates ensured he was either involved in or very much aware of every major criminal escapade that took place.
From the murder of Jack the Hat by the Kray twins to the Great Train Robbery, from the fatal shooting at the Pen Club to the American Mafia's attempts to penetrate London's casino scene, Pyle has seen it all.
Yet, despite a few close calls, including a spell in prion on a murder charger that would have seen him hanged if found guilty, Pyle remained at liberty throughout.
He saw firsthand the nature of organised crime change from the protection rackets and casino scame of the sixties, through the highly organised armed robberies of the seventies.
To the rise of the drug trade which began in earnest in the eighties and continues to the present day.
He is therefore able to provide a fresh perspective on many well-known crimes as well as a wealth of information about hitherto unknown aspects of criminality.
