Asking for (price of) ST & LT in Thai

When asking a Thai co worker how to say Short Time & Long time, I was told Thai's use: 

ไม่นาน: ไม่ นาน: mâi-naan - short time & นาน: naan - long time.

Are these used in the context of Mongering?

E.g. ไม่นานราคาเท่าไหร่ครับ?

 ไม่ นาน ราคา เท่าไหร่ครับ。 

mâi-naan raa-kaa-tâo-rài kráp

I have found this very easy for me.

First I don't bring up prices, and most of the time they don't either.

If they do, I have found that they know how to say how much for ST & TL in English.

I just say, "I pay bar for you LT". If they don't do LT, they come back with "I only do ST" in English.

Unless you speak very good Thai, I think things will get confusing trying to negotiate in Thai.

Agree. I think that the meaning and difference between “Shortime” and “Longtime” is one of the very first things they learn. So even a farm fresh will know what are you talking about. Stick with english and use thai for fun with them when money is not involved.

I think Thais usually say chuua kraao (temporary) for short time. So something like เวลาชั่วคราว .

I'm actually a language geek who is currently taking lessons to speak Thai, so just using English isn't for me.

As I don't feel comfortable asking my female Thai teacher Mongering questions, I thought I'd ask here.

The Thai word for short time is like Syd Tybil said: ชั่วคราว chua krao.

The other one you often hear is simply the English word short time with a Thai pronunciation: ชอตไทม์ chot time

 

For long time it's ค้างคืน kaang keun (lit. to stay overnight) or ลองไทม์ long time

ST and LT are bar phrases, if they are translated, it will often be more specific, for example to go with a customer for 2 hours, to stay overnight, or more likely (for ST) to go upstairs.

Using something like ชั่วคราว may just cause confusion, I would suggest you simply ask her เท่าไหร่ and then let her ask ไปนานหรือเปล่า or something along those lines (if LT is an option) then you will also learn how she refers to it, although there’s a 90% chance she may just use the English words.

And if she just quotes you a price, you can counter with กี่ชั่วโมง or (2,000 บาท) ไปนานใช่ไหม.

Problem when you ask questions in Thai is that

- if they can understand you -

you will probably get the answer in Thai...

and you may well not be able to understand them !   

(Happened to me too many times, and not especially for ladies)

As someone whose been taking private lessons weekly for nearly a year, studying 1-2 hrs a day, getting an answer in Thai is kinda the point. 

While I wouldn't be able to understand long winded explanations, ค้างคืนสามพันบสท isn't too much of a stretch.

Joke aside, many girls speak their village dialect, based by example on Thai and Lao for girls from Isaan, and - by experience - I know it's not that easy to understand. 

No doubt that some farangs manage to understand them and even to be fluent in Thai. I am just not one of them...

The “village dialect” is normally a different language, which means they will be able to speak central Thai with little accent other than mispronunciation of ร and ช and using a few Isaan words and expressions that most “central Thais” would not use (but understand nonetheless).

If they speak in their native tongue though, it will be unintelligible for us foreigners (who have only learned central Thai), but that is not the norm when they speak with “strangers”.

According to my dictionary 

บูม means boom (grow quickly) and บูมๆ means have sex

I would not advise you to speak in thai when you ask a girl for sex. 

Because if they think you know about thailand they know your sex relationship with them for money will not last long.

If they think you can speak only english and you don't know about thailand, they think they will make much money with you in the future
