How fast is that "free" hotel internet?

I see many hotels offering "free" internet.  Anyone have any bandwidth tests on how fast that free internet is in Down/Upload speeds?  Or is my phone going to get better speeds?  Many thanks.

Every hotel or accommodation will be different.   :Think1:

Depends on what bandwidth/speed connection the hotel has coming in to the building, how many access points they have set up, how far you are from one, how many guests are using it, and you're limited by wireless speed (and what type of router connection it uses)... and of course, if it's raining in Pattaya, all bets are off.

If you have internet concerns, you should also buy an appropriately sized data package for your personal hotspot enabled smartphone.

See my recent thread on Tourist SIM packages in the Mobile Phones & Thai SIM Cards section of the forum.

He started a thread earlier asking if his laptop will fit into "a hotel safe."

I'm guessing he won't be around long.

Sick Water Buffalo summed it up very well.

Personally, I have never had any major issues with internet access in Thai hotels. Generally, speeds are pretty good for email and web browsing.

I don't have need to upload or download large files, so can't comment.

Last trip I stayed in a 5 star and a 3 star hotel, Internet was better at the 3 star but found it hard to get a constant connection. If you are beating off over Internet porn suggest downloading it before you arrive.

If someone is beating off over internet porn while in Pattaya, where they can walk down the soi and get beat off by a live girl for a couple hundred baht, they have bigger problems than their hotel's connection speed.   :P

There's a free app called Speedtest which measures WiFi access speeds. It will also measure cellular access speeds.

Why wouldn't I be around for long?  After asking, I also got some great information on what to buy that can hold a laptop  (Pacsafe travel safe).  It was very helpful and now I'm looking into buying one.

in regards to the wifi question, it's a legit question.  Why you got it out for me bro?

Very true.  I was hoping maybe a BM would have some screenshots of U/D speed tests at random hotels.  *fingers crossed*

He can ask what he likes, stop being negative. Everyone knows searching for things is futile.

Wifi varies, my hotel good some days bad others, probably similar to a lot of hotels. I think mine varied from 1gbps to 10gpbp

I'm sure he can but then threads like these clog up the forum all day. Its only basic courtesy that a newbie puts in a little bit of effort before posting a query. or is it too much to ask ?

Yeah its too much, it really bores me when people say Google it, and claim to have found out in 0.75 seconds. Probably better for you to ignore these type of threads

I would ignore probably if the top 5 New Content topics werent all repetitive queries instead of actual TR's & other topic every time I visit.

BTW RTFF is way different from Google.

It would be nice for those who do hotel reviews to consider including a speed test of the internet.  I use http://testmy.net/

Not that it will be the same for everyone at that hotel, but that is an item I would like to see.  I just hooked up a Slingbox to my home cable television and I would like to see if there is a possibility at certain hotels for watching my local news and sports at times for the month I am there.   I would also appreciate it if those who review hotels would include a picture of the television as it would be difficult to hook up to an old "tube tv" and sometimes they forget to take a picture or give info on that.

Don't expect too much from any free internet in any hotel.

My recommendation is to buy a hotspot, get a sim card on the airport - preepaid with enough data volume for your time there - and use that hotspot for all your devices.

I have measured the speed in every hotel I have stayed in in Thailand, and in general I can get 1-5 mbit/sec during the day (off peak hour), but only 0.2 - 1 mbit/sec at peak times.

I usually end up using data from my Thai AIS SIM Card instead
