Shipping tools from Ireland to Thailand

Anyone know about or have experience shipping things to Thailand?

I have about 2 trunks of tools that I want to bring over. 5 foot long x 3 foot wide x 3 feet tall.

Any ideas on cost or recommendations on who to use.

Thanks

I moved tools to Thailand five years ago without any problem, but my circumstances may have been different to yours.  Customs in Thailand had said that as I could not work in Thailand I would have to pay import duty on them.  Then we found out that as my wife was coming back to Thailand with me, she could bring back her belongings with her and no tax due as long as they arrived within six months of her arrival.  We boxed up 30 boxes ( 3 cubic meters ) with clothes, household goods and the tools which were then sent by sea in a shared container.  This was all arranged through an agent in the UK and we had a port agent in Thailand who located and then accompanied the boxes through the customs procedures.  All the paperwork was in my wifes name, all I had to do was pay the agent to do the job for us. One box was opened but they didn`t look far into it as nothing had been disturbed below the top layer and we paid nothing to customs.

Can not remember the exact costs but it wasn`t too expensive and the cost of the agent in Thailand was 5,000 baht.  The boxes were collected from our house in England, taken to a port and then included in a container which went via Singapore to Thailand and it took about six weeks altogether.  From what I heard from the shipping people, regular shaped boxes that are easily handled are much cheaper to transport than irregular things, all my boxes were the same size and packed well. We were also told that there was a maximum weight for each box to keep the costs down so we put some heavy things in each box and then filled up with lighter things on top.  Fortunately everything arrived in perfect condition much to my surprise!

Unless these are specialist tools it's probably cheaper to go and buy a new lot in Tescos, I see power tools, and all sorts of general handy-man tools are super low prices in Thailand.

Some of the tools in Thailand are good value, especially some of the electric ones.  Some of the cheaper hand tools, chisels, screw drivers, drill bits and many more things are cheap but no good quality at all.  You have to pay a lot for the decent tools that you can actually work with.   The main reason that I brought over many of my tools was because you get used to using certain tools, you know exactly what they will do and are much more comfortable using them.  I am glad that I brought them over with me and it really didn`t cost that much to do it.

Thanks for the replies appreciate them. The tools I have are not very expensive high end stuff I would guess maybe €1500 all in. I would also have some other bits and pieces like plasma TV etc. but I don't know would that travel well. So say maybe €4000 worth of stuff. My wife will be coming with me so everything could go in her name.

You didn't say how much the shipping was only the agent in Thailand. Would u remember how much in total? I would probably have the same amount as you including clothes etc.

IMHO you should really think very long and hard about paying for the shipping of anything to Thailand, and in particular tools. The issue is - realistically how much use will they get?. You will find it will be infrequent use with them sitting idle tacking up space and getting rusty. Also given the cost of local labour is it cost effective to import and use your own tools. Remember, if you are living in a leased Condo you will have no need for tools.

To be honest, I found abandoning my tools collected over many years a hardest thing to do. However, it was also a necessary thing. I solved my dilemma by inviting my friends to "help themselves" to my collection. I did not wish to sell them and they went to good homes. In fact on recent visit to Oz I had cause to go into a garage of a close friend and there beautiful presented was part of my tool collection - I was close to tearing up as it brought back many memories.

In summary - you would need to have some very compelling reasons to justify the expense and inconvenience. And also to be very sure that they will be put to use on a frequent enough basis to justify the expense. If you can not tick these pints off - then leave them in Ireland. Travel light

I do a lot of DIY and hope to do a lot of my own house improvements but so far I can't get a proper estimate from anywhere on shipping. :(

there are a couple of reliable shipping agents in dublin .

for example a recent quote that i got was for a container F.O.B port of shanghai to port of dublin . the shipping charge was about 1200 euro plus dock fees . ( approx 200 euro ) i would estimate that a smaller load of say 3 sq metres would be 650 euro plus dock fees ,

i really dont know if this would help as its from china .

contact ace express in dublion
