Long term stay in Thailand ...

Does anyone know or discover the means to staying long term (like 3 to 6 months) without going through all those visa runs, applying for visas (e.g. marriage, retirement, etc)?
Right now I heard they've changed the rules to 30 days stay and then exit and return for another 30 perpetually. But that is tedious and tiring especially for retirees who couldn't (or don't want to) meet their requirements for retirement visa.
If you know a way, then big rewards for you ...

Get a tourist visa - that gives you 60 days and you can go and get an extension on it for 30 extra days from an immigration office - does that help?

You can get a 60 day visa extendable to 90 days in you home country prior to arriving in Thailand.  I have heard you can get a double one in Laos but it does require one exit after three months.  If you are over 50 it is really easy to get a retirement visa which is good for one year.  Never go to any agent in Thaland that claims they will get you a visa for Bt 40,000 because they only cost Bt 2,000.

I know the post is old, but........I just got a one year visa from the embassy in Washington DC.   I'll still have to get permit stamps but I understand that I won't have to leave the country.  It is a long-stay AO, (or OA, I forget).
