Thanks for this detailed post Piece Corp. I did have a booking for mid August but now knowing the rain situation I think I'm going to ditch it and go to Koh Samed instead.

I'll leave KC until the January trip now.

Room rates are much higher in January, close to double at some resorts.  Even with the rain, I prefer the off-season because of low rates and fewer tourists.  It won't rain all day but it may be overcast all day,

Enjoy the chill, you will like it.  Just keep in mind it's a few km outside of the bars.

Not the Kai Bae bars though. He knows where he's going, don't worry about that lol

I made this my longest Koh Chang visit, 10 days, splitting time between two 5-star resorts:  The Emerald Cove, where I usually stay, and The Chill, a boutique resort at Kae Bae.  Very few tourists and great weather.  In fact, today is the first bad weather day, a good time to update the thread.

First, The Emerald Cove

DSC_0525.thumb.jpg.5c0d22095423d63cfe438c912eef51ec.jpgDSC_0530.thumb.jpg.8cb479fc137e55cdf2b1ed1bbce9fe08.jpg

DSC_0528.thumb.jpg.7dda5a21fb04fa23700a26b5934d6312.jpg

The 4-6 PM half-price happy hour at the Pool Bar now includes food, so I had this pepperoni pizza with a mango margarita, only 277 baht, including service.

DSC_0551.thumb.jpg.2b96d87fe343274ba197ecbae2ff7671.jpg

For dining, I tried an Australian T-Bone with red, for about a thousand baht.

THE CHILL

Opened in 2010, about 1-2 km south of the Emerald Cove, The Chill is a boutique resort with ultra modern decor.  Only 38 rooms, of which about 6 are occupied.  The Chill gets the highest ratings on Trip Advisor at present so I was curious what the buzz was about.

DSC_0616.thumb.jpg.75136864fc64ecc6459fd3fc79af5ffc.jpg

Rooms are smaller than the Emerald Cove, and have a second bed on the balcony.

DSC_0631.thumb.jpg.ea11d501d00ea28fde6bc7ced84e5f07.jpg

All rooms are facing north, towards the pool.  The property is long and narrow so only the last unit, the most expensive suite, has a sea view, but ground-level rooms feature direct pool access from the balcony.

DSC_0876.thumb.jpg.406c8dbc50410a3352938827133111f8.jpg

The beach is a bit rocky so I did all my swimming in the pool.

Breakfast is served all-day, any time from 7 AM to 10:30 PM at the Chill Out Cafe, and is ala cart, just order as much as you like.  Complimentary for guests, 695++ for walk-ins.

But you had to protect your meal from the beach buzzards.

DSC_0724.thumb.jpg.645fc4a41f76f696bb4b5ef54074480f.jpg

I also tried some of their pasta dishes, seafood spaghetti and crab lasagna, for 350++,

One advantage of The Chill over the Emerald Cove, is that it is in the middle of Kai Bae Village and lots of bars and restaurants are nearby.  The receptionist suggested I take a walk down to the public beach, using the road across from the 7-11 store, and passing by the Kai Bae Hut and Beach Resort.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at The Chill.  The staff were wonderful and really went out of their way to see you were comfortable, but I still believe The Emerald Cove is the best place to stay on Koh Chang, and not just because it's slightly less expensive.

Cheers.

I have been to Koh Chang many times and stayed at the following:

Changburi, Flora Talay, Centara, Koh Chang Cliff, Warapura, and Garden resort.

I think Garden resort in Kai Bae  (9.0 on Agoda) was my favorite and I will be booking it again for Songkran.  Should be around 2000 baht a night.

Anyone have up to date info? I'm heading there in between stays in Pattaya, White Sands beach area, early May for 5 nights to chill out on the beach, etc. Looking forward to checking out the 2 bar areas for some recreation and company.

White Sands Beach = good
Most other areas = meh

I always stay at Sang Arun Bungalows. Depending on the season, can be had between 1,000-1,500 a night.

Beach Tango cafe is right at the beach end of it, and always great for breakfast, lunch and dinner or snacks.

Don’t rent any motor Scooters - rent a car if you want transportation, albeit the Baht buses are fine for most short- distance travel.

Yes, in the white sands beach area there is a girlie bar complex with some decent talent.

Was not there last yr, but 2 years ago went there twice.  White Sands beach very nice and there are plenty of choices for economy and luxury accommodations.  My own impression was that the closest to the Ferry drop off end of White sands beach was best place to stay/vibe - for economy can look at SP place(1000ish b/night in higher season)

At that same end of White Sands Beach on opposite to beach side of street there used to be a place called Zap Bar where usually 5-6 girls that were bar-fine(able) and not bad place.  The girlie complex at other end of White sands was a tad seedy and bit hit or miss.  Maybe this all changed.  To be clear, anywhere in Thailand where there women there are sex opportunities.

Great food, good prices.  Actually Koh Chang is one of few places in Thailand where would consider renting scooter as generally wider streets, less traffic and there quite a bit of distance between places.  Saw Flora ta lay mentioned and it a nice place, with nice beach, but a good scooter ride from White Sands and baht buses at that time pretty inconsistent.   Common sense things like driving scooter in dark from far parts of island a good way to get into trouble.

The trip to Koh Chang and back is the worst part of trip.

Nice post by the OP. Cheers! Shame about your photos being lost into the abyss. That would be a server issue, not operator error.

I highly recommend 15 Palms on White Sands Beach - https://15palms.com/rooms/ bean bags on the beach, nothing could be more comfortable with a cocktail. Their food is good and not expensive either.

The Sabai Bar has a lot of action but best to bring your own IMHO. That is located about 50 meters down the beach. They have their own version known as Mini Pattaya or "mini Pats" which are about 12 bar beers with "bottom of the barrel" talent. I would not call that action. Again, bring your own.

English owned and operated but don't let that stop you. Just kidding. Actually, a mate of mine owns that and Paddy's Palms. Cool English vibe and ample ciders as well. Food is BBF with a solid Sunday Roast.

Rent a motorbike and ask around for directions on hiking the highest point of the island. You will roast your ass off in the Jungle but it's worth it once you get to the top. Take some friends it's rather treacherous in some spots if you don't have somebody watching your back.

Also, go up into the waterfall area and hike up there it's like 100 or 200 baht which is stupid but they do charge you.

I usually visit Koh Chang after Songkran, when they drop the rates, but they cut the rates much sooner this year.  May as well go while it's still high season and I can enjoy some fine weather.  Hope this post can provide a 'virtual' trip for someone, from earlier this month before the state of emergency.

I thought the resort might be deserted, but was about one-third booked, mainly Russians with some Thais on the weekend.  It's strange when people come up to you, start speaking Russian, and expect you to understand.

Breakfast buffet has always been great.  Surprising, no bacon was available, they used to provide both crispy and not,  But they still had imported cheese, only Gouda this time instead of alternating with Colby and Swiss.  Gouda is fine with me, I piled it on some of the delicious bread they bake on-site.

Took a walk over to Kai Bae Walking Street, where the girls outnumbered punters 4 to one.  A young spinner caught my eye but she kept her head buried in her cell phone all night and I lost interest.

Weather was exceptional, 31 degrees every day and didn't rain until a very slight sprinkle while I was leaving.  I took these final shots hanging out the back of a baht bus on the way back to the ferry pier.

The bar area at White Sands, on the left, was very quiet but it was only mid-day.   This used to be the main bar area but I think Kai Bae Walking Street has now taken over as the dominant bar area on the island.

Finally, the ferry arrived for the trip back to Trat.  I had a great week and I'm really glad I went.  Have a nice tan now and built up my Vitamin D to resist the virus.  I watched CNN in horror at the recent news, just got home two weeks ago, and now mentally prepared to hunker down for a few months. Cheers.
