Kingfisher has gone under. They were looking for a bailout from the Indian government but that didn't happen. One of a many Indian airlines that are in financial difficulty. Sucks you had to spend more money. Is kingfisher not giving you a refund?

Just curious: will this affect BMs travelling to/from India - individually or in tour groups? Other carriers I've used Delhi-BKK (eg ANA, Thai Inter) are relatively expensive.

Unlikely... Lots of other flights...

From Bangalore, there are only two airlines, Thai and Bangkok Airways. No Indian airline operates on this sector. Yet a two way ticket by Bangkok airways costs less than 250 USD

This is an article released yesterday from an aviation magazine:

  • Kingfisher curtails ‘bleeding’ overseas wide-body operations‏

India's Kingfisher Airlines has reduced its overseas wide-body operations, returning an Airbus A330-200 aircraft to a lessor, and has called on India to approve higher foreign direct investment levels for domestic airlines.

The beleaguered carrier listed the moves in a broad ranging 18-point media release. The release outlined efforts to rectify its challenging commercial position and also attempts to reassure passengers that it will operate as many flights as possible.

It notes that on 13 March, Kingfisher operated 101 flights, and that it aims to operate the same number on 14 March. It provides no projection for subsequent days.

"Our prime mission is to maintain schedule integrity by predicting in advance what we can with the sole objective of minimising, if not eliminating, guest inconvenience," says Kingfisher.

The carrier also confirms that it is "curtailing" overseas wide-body flights, which it says are "bleeding heavily". The carrier has an extensive overseas route network, serving destinations in Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific.

"To this end we have already returned one Airbus A330-200 to the lessor in the UK," it says. "Positive and immediate action is being taken on all fronts to cut costs."

At the time of publication, Kingfisher was unable to provide details about the aircraft it plans to return. According to Flightglobal Pro, Kingfisher has five leased A330-200 aircraft.

Of these, two are leased from Ireland-based Pembroke Group, a unit of Standard Chartered, and three from Dubai-based DAE Capital. The registration of the two A330s leased from Pembroke are VT-VJL and VT-VJN.

The statement also touched on Kingfisher's financial difficulties, noting the impact of the suspension of its IATA Clearing House (ICH) and Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP) accounts, stemming from action by India's tax authorities.

"We request one and all to appreciate the serious handicaps we face not only because of our frozen accounts but because of the operating environment," says Kingfisher. "We are working hard to resolve the issues that confront us given the current environment. We continue to work with the tax authorities to arrive at a solution to de-freeze our accounts as early as possible."

Meanwhile, it is working with its bankers to raise "urgent interim working capital" and said approval of these funds would not be contingent on State Bank of India approval.

The airline also awaits the government's final verdict on investments by foreign airlines, with the current foreign direct investment level capped at 49%.

"We can confirm that there is interest from prospectives on this basis," says Kingfisher.

Most ticket holders should get there money back, especially those that bought by credit card. But with their accounts still frozen Kingfishers' options to refund might be very limited. It will surely take a while to get their refunds, if at all. As for credit card purchases /or travel insurance payouts, maybe that protection won't kick in until the airline actually goes bust. That might not happen for a while.

That of course doesn't help all the poor guys who need to rebook (and pay) with another airline! I hope it all works out for them.

Being in the middle of things and seeing daily reports on TV about Kingfisher...i can say they are really having a bad time. I woulnt wanna book a flight with them coz recently in india they got a lot of flights cancelled due to pilots strike. Just today Mr. Mallya (owner) addressed the media that things have been sorted out with the pilots. I am not sure how this affects its other international routes but i know for sure that i wouldnt wanna book with them coz there's always a risk of cancellation or delayed flights just at the last moment.

I've not heard anything about Jet AIrways though. A recent article I saw:

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Jet Airways India Ltd , the country's top private-sector carrier, is not facing any financial trouble, its chairman Naresh Goyal told reporters on Wednesday.

India's beleaguered airlines sector is grappling with high jet fuel prices, low fares and an economic slowdown.

I know alot of smaller airlines like Jet Lite, Air India Express, and some local airlines are really feeling the crunch.

And as someone mentioned before, Kingfisher hasn't completely gone under but it's only a matter of time. Unless there is a minor miracle I don't see them making it passed this year.

Quite a few guys worrying about refunds so worth mentioning that virtually every online booking agent includes Scheduled Airline failure insurance within the ticket price. Its normally around £2-3 and on some bookings it's itemised separately.

Its not normally an option to decline the cover so all should be covered for refunds sooner or later if Kingfisher folds

Breaking News: Kingfisher Flying license may be revoked tomorrow as the owner/promoter

Mr.Mallaya has been summoned by DGCA tomorrow.

Quote:

NEW DELHI: Ailing Kingfisher Airlines today faced the prospects of its flying licence being cancelled and its boss

Vijay Mallya has been asked by DGCA to present a clear picture of the cash-strapped private carrier.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mulled cancellation of Kingfisher's flying permit after the airline today submitted to it the summer flight schedule with 15 to 16 aircraft as against 28 planes submitted last month.

"The airline not only lacks aircraft, they also lack funds for day-to-day operations. They are failing to meet their flight schedule, causing inconvenience to the passengers and also they failed to give salaries to their employees for past four-five months," official sources said. The sources said Kingfisher may be planning a quiet shutdown and Mallya being an "accountable" person has been asked to meet the DGCA to present a clear picture.

The whole picture is likely to become clear in few days, the officials said.

The beleaguered airline was served a show cause notice by the Civil Aviation regulator DGCA towards the end of February asking why its licence should not be suspended as it had made unannounced cancellations.

The 15-day mandatory notice period has already lapsed and they have failed to give a valid reason for curtailment of their flight schedule, most of their explanations are unsatisfactory and they have not given a definite recovery plan, officials said requesting anonymity said, adding the airline is presently operating only 15 or 16 aircraft.

Facing severe fund crunch, Vijay Mallya-promoted airline has decided to curtail its overseas flights operations to avoid further losses and also return of a leased aircraft.

According to sources, the airline has planned to suspend its overseas operations from March 25, except Delhi-London which it is withdrawing from April 9. Also the airline would return its wide body airbus A 330-200 aircraft to a lessor in the United Kingdom.

Struggling to stay afloat, around 60 accounts of Kingfisher Airlines have been frozen by the tax authorities for its failure to pay taxes after levying it from the passengers.

Angry over not being paid for four months, airline pilots reported sick, forcing the airline to curtail its scheduled flights. Mallya at a meeting with the pilots last Friday said their grievances would be looked into but did not set a time frame. He had also said the airline would come out with a crystal clear roadmap for its future in a few days.

Kingfisher has a total debt of about Rs 7,057 crore and accumulated losses of about Rs 6,000 crore.

Earlier this month, global airlines body IATA suspended Kingfisher for not clearing its dues.

This was the second time in just over a month that the airline was suspended on the same count from the IATA Clearing House (ICH) through which airlines and related firms settle accounts for services provided by them to other such companies.

Time to book another flight and forget the ticket money I guess.
