Retirment Visa.

Banking system here is very good and at least as efficient as the system in UK. Only reason that I can see for not wanting to transfer more money than you need is the exchange rate which is poor to say the least. I have pound sterling accounts in Thailand and keep money in them in the hopes of a better exchange rate sometime in the future.

One year visa from your country with multiple entry is the best way to go if you can get one. Then retirement visa is easier to get than a married visa but needs the larger amount of income or savings. Married visa does not depend on a joint account and the money is safe in your own account.

You should start to sort out your visa in Thailand with plenty of time left on the origional one to allow for any problems. If a problem does come up there are so many visa specialist agents that can help you with the process. They do charge a fee but the one I used for my wifes UK visas and now my Thai visas was well worth paying as he saved me so much time and money.

OK guys I appreciate all the advice given here and I am going to get a Tourist Visa (60 + 30 days) then apply for Retirement Visa soon after arriving.

I will be applying with income over 65,000 per month and dont want to tie up 800,000 in a thai bank account.

2 questions I have; Is there anything I should do in Australia before heading over that will make the process easier in Thailand eg get a police check here or bring copies of bank statements to prove income?

Also can anyone recommend an agency in Pattaya to help with my Visa when I arrive next month.

No CRCs required here.

Bank statements only if they're relevant to proving your income, which will need to be verified by your Consulate here - don't think you can do it there.

thanks edge. No criminal record check required which is strange because the embassy here requires it.

So I should bring current bank staements showing income and any other suporting docs like copy of lease?

Since I will be applying for a RV I am hoping a 1 way ticket is OK from Aus.

The rules for applying for a RV in your own country are completely different to those for applying here, which is what you're doing - definitely no CRCs or Medical required here.

Start your application for an Extension of Stay (Retirement) soon after you get here. Don't wait until it expires or go into the 30 day extension you're implying you're going to get.

I'd bring whatever you think proves your income.

The one way ticket Q gets different answers. I would check with your airline as it is they who will refuse to let you board if you're in breach of the rules.

Hi

Retirement visa question please. Prior to returning back to UK for an unexpected trip, I spoke to a few Visa Agents in Pattaya who can process a visa extension(retirement) including dealing with the bank requirements , (nudge nudge wink wink) :hello09:

I was previously on an extention due to marriage and am now divorced/visa expired last month.

When i return, I would like to go down the above route but am unsure if I need to apply to a Thai Consolate in UK for new 'o' visa or if i can return on the free 30 day visa exemtion like a tourist then convert that to a 1yr retirement visa in Patts?

Thanks in advance of your help

Going the dodgy route you're talking about (23-25k?) who knows what might be possible.

I would recommend you to come back in on a Tourist Visa. You shouldn't really be able to convert from anything less.

Or, in that case, who you can afford to know.

Considering that the legitimate route only costs about 6k (including 3800 for a Multi Re-entry Permit) at 30k I'm surprised he even had to get out of bed. :Think1:

As said, 1900 for the Extension of Stay (Retirement) + 3800 for the Multi Re-entry Permit, if required, or 1000 per Single Re-entry Permit, if required. Nip out for a side trip without a Permit and your Visa Extension is dead.

The 800k bank balance requirement is not, of course a cost and will result in many saved ATM 150 charges.

The bank will require 200 to produce the required letter.

Hence 1900 + 3800 + 200 = 5900 or, as I said, about 6k.

If you go the pension/income route instead of bank funds (or a combination of both) the Consulate will require about 2400 for the required verification letter.

An agent may ask 10-15k to do all that for you, or 23 - 25 now 30k, for the dodgy method (money in and out of bank overnight).

If you're sure, then just get a Single Re-Entry Permit at 1000, which you can get when/if you need it.

That would make the initial cost just the 1900 + 200 for the bank letter = 2100.

With a Retirement Extension there's no reason to go out at all, but, as I said, don't forget your Permit if you do.

Never heard of it costing only 6k? He didnt even have to show anything, bank accts etc like you have to do, his contact owns a bar not far from LK. Now he lives in patts, for 30k(baht) I would give my left...and right testicle ! and avoid all the red tape bs you have to go thru with governments.

LOL - You must be richer than me. I'd rather hang on to my money.......and my testicles.

One of my renewals went like this :-

12 Month Extension of Stay (Retirement) in 5 Minutes.

I agree with Edge on the banking issue. I also have a substantial amount of money with KasiKorn and even have bought their debentures.

However, like all comments about finance, don't put all your eggs in one basket - keep some out of Thailand.

But the way western economics is heading, I might be moving all my savings out of the UK anyway :)

Well thanks for all the advice, got the retirement visa and very easy with all the help of the Farang chap who helps out at the Jontiem office.I went there another time when he was'nt there and it was a nightmare and even with my Thai GF asking the questions for me I was very unsure because there is a lot ''lost in translation'' with her. Still in holiday mode but loving it.

Apologies if I missed something but my initial cost was 2k to convert from a tourist visa to an O type (TM86), plus 1.9k 60+ days later to extend that O Type for a year (TM7) (plus bank fees, embassy fees and re-entry permit fees as necessary).

Well you could say the initial cost was the Tourist Visa in that case I suppose (unless that was when they were free) but yes, to get from a TV to an O Visa is 2000 1900 I think.

Application fee for a TM 86 (Conversion) is 2k Baht, for a TM 7 (Extension) it's 1.9k Baht. The costs are shown on Page 2 of the respective forms.

We may call Thailand a third world country, but it certainly doesn't have the banking system of one.

Yeah? I was sitting 90 minutes in the third-road branch of CIMB to open a fixed deposit account about two months ago. I don't know how long it actually takes, but they spend the time reading my passport, and typing my personal and visa data from the passport in their computer. I lost the patience and walked out when they asked me after those 1 1/2 hours about my adress in Pattaya, didn't want to spend all day there. The interest was good, I lose a couple of 10k by not having this account. A small price for the convenience of not having to see these morons ever again.

Never been there.

Kasikorn seems to get most votes of confidence on here.

Never had a problem with them in person or online in nearly 6 years.
