End of free downloads?

Is this the beginning of the end for Torrent Downloads?

The popular BT Junkie site has closed and recently Megaupload was closed by the US Justice department. http://tech.pnosker.com/2012/01/19/megaupload-taken-down-by-feds-on-charges-of-piracy/

What next?.......... complete censorship of the internet.

Tubesites are going legit too... spamming with teaser clips, cutoff clips, etc.

People think internet is a free for all, but it isn't. The govt can shut many things down very easily, or at least make them very impractical to use.

We will never go back to the wild west days of Napster (the real one that had EVERYTHING) and similar.

Unfortunate. But the web in 10 years will be so commercialized it will be unrecognizable, just like the web of 2000 is totally different than now.

To be honest, I think there are to many torrent sites to close down, its not the same as the pay file storage sites like Megaupload.

So, before you know it, you'll have to walk down to the videostore and rent a vhs tape again :-)

Fragmentation is just as big of a danger as getting shut down by Feds. Torrents work by having many people d/l the same files. You can't have much of a torrent site if you have only 100 people. And you can't have a torrent site with 1,000,000 people and not be noticed by the feds.

In the old days, I could find anything I wanted on Napster, and watch it a few hours later. Easy process.

Today, I would rather pay Netfix and Amazon download, etc instead of dicking around for an hour looking for some spammy site that may or may not actually offer what I want and install malware on my computer in the meantime.

Not used torrent sites for probably 7 - 8 years now. Chances of being caught, malware installation, incomplete downloads etc. means it isn't always a good idea despite the free price tag.

I got introduced to news servers about 7 - 8 years ago and it is by far a superior system. Admittedly I do pay (Astraweb) $25 to download 180Gb, but by downloading mainly divx movies & tv shows you get a lot of entertainment for your money. SSL encryption means I am pretty secure from would be snoopers, and I have never seen any malware. Downloads are retained on their servers in excess of 3 years, so there is never a problem waiting for seeds as per torrents.. Speed of download is dependant on your provider, but with Virginmedia I can download @ 3Mb/sec off peak and their speeds are set to double they tell us.

Whilst I believe in a totally free internet & download service, I find it worthwhile spending a few pounds for a better service.

I believe in free internet and download. I don't buy the concept that the CONTENT is free.

If someone spent $50 million to make a film they have a right to compensation for it's viewing.

yes i`ve always used newsgroups, far superior, safe way to get your stuff, and theres never any viruses, its always what it says it is, full speed download, only about £7-11 a month for unlimited, with astraweb, welll thats what i was using when was home, no contract, rolling month payment if needed, i used to use torrents when i first got into computers, never used after finding out about news servers, no shit, virus, speed dependant on seeds etc,

Free downloads will always excist, but with the risk included will increase the next few years. How crazy isn't it that the "almighty" USA can already demand people from many other countries to be extradited because of p2p, by using a law primary meant for extraditing terrorists....

I download tons of series and movies, but if somebody offered me a good and reliable legal service for streaming tv-series and movies, I would jump right on it. Unfortunately an offer like this is completly lacking in Norway. The companies put more money into trying to stop p2p, than developing a decent alternative that they can actually earn money from.

Play on, player!

It is funny how people start talking about paying $25+/month so they can d/l "free" stuff. It just goes to show you that most people are not that broke and would prefer to pay for convenience than deal with the hassle of 'free'. You guys don't have Netflix in Norway? In the US we also have Rhapsody (or something other service) where you can pay for a monthly plan to stream as much music as you want. (you just can't download it... only stream.)

I remember two years ago, some movie company decided to request IPs of all all people who d/l their movie and tracked them back to their ISP provider and sued them. I was one of the people who d/l that specific movie. I was sweating bullets for a few months, but thankfully they never tracked me down...

Free used to be free on the internet. Today, it's more of an illusion.

It may not always be torrents but free downloads will continue to be found online somewhere in someway. Before using torrent files, we were using Napster and Limewire to download files. Evolution is a beautiful thing.

What evolution? It is becoming harder and harder to find what you want.

Vast majority of time these days, if you find what you want you are greeted with a spam site that wants you to download 'plugins' and infect your computer or has you clicktrhough 4 pages, 5 popunders, and 3 popups only to realize that the link doesn't work.... again...

Free downloads are becoming harder and harder by the year.

Newsgroups are definitely the way forward! And Spotify for music :}

Much safer as it's a 'download only' protocol you're not sharing while you download like with BitTorrent, so while you are infringing you're way less likely to get told off for it.

What does worry me though, is a whole bunch of ISPs in the UK have blocked TPB (Virgin Media, at least - more to follow). While it's easy to get around with a VPN you can bet that the majority of people out there wouldn't know what that is, where to get one or how to use it.

The end of free speech, or the beginning of media influence over government policies spreading across the pond?

Hmm.

You're confused about what 'free speech' is.

Free speech doesn't mean you can post and steal other people's intellectual property.

Enjoy while it lasts. I give it 10 more years max unless some super-duper torrent alternative technology emerges... (something like Tor, but quick and painless.)

those here that can get whatever they are looking for on the web (anything), without using google/bing, will always be able to find that for free no matter what rules etc. come into play. Most people understand the Internet as about 2% of what is really going on. Technology almost always will keep the info available.

Pirate Bay! Now and 4evermore! :Clap1:

tell that to Svartholm Warg (Pirate Bay founder) Extradited from Cambodia to Sweden on some trumped up immigration charges and alleged hacking of Swedish tax file numbers. Blind Freddie can see the hands of American Music and Film companies pulling the strings with Swedish law makers to punish him for Pirate Bay.

There are some that only employ words for the purpose of disguising their thoughts.
