China Garden Restaurant

Recommended Posts

just been my second time to the China Garden Restaurant on Soi Lenkee,

first time i had crab & sweetcorn soup followed by Duck with pancakes and Hoisin sauce , soup was great so was the duck but it could have been a little crispier , lots of spring onions& cucumber ,which you dont get that often .

this time had the crispy lamb starter ( not crispy ) and the special fried rice as main which was tasty .

Service staff were friendly and attentive both times ,

couple of issues the 2nd time

1: cockroach running around on my table , but it was small and this is Thailand so bugs are everywhere .

2 : A waitress took a box of what appeared to be Breaded prawns from a freezer walked through the restaurant with them to the kitchen and then as they werent needed put them back in the freezer . Why do you need frozen prawns in Thailand .

3 : final and most serious issue in my mind there was a young cook in the kitchen with a green mask around his throat who while preparing food with his hands , was also eating food with his hands , at the same time , without washing his hands in between ( he did this a few times ,seems to be accepted ), if there is an open kitchen at least the staff should be trained not to do this sort of thing .

"And were you pleased?" they asked Helen in Hell.

"Pleased?" answered she,when all Troy's towers fell;

And dead were Priam´s sons, and lost his throne?

And such a war was fought as none had known;

And even the Gods took part; and all because

Of me alone! Pleased?

I should say I was!"

I tried this place last December, I had the duck too, and yes it wasn't crispy-but it was very nice all the same...Overall thought the food was really good

I tried this place last March (I think it was) not long after it opened.

My friend (who is a Board Member and also a genuine foodie), me & my girl decided to give it a try

Later my friend sent a PM to the owner, sharing our observations and comments (including a similar observation of a "Chef" in an open kitchen sampling a soup with a ladle from the pot)

I don't think he received a satisfactory response ...( I may be wrong....I will check next week when I'm back at the Beach again)

I have not been back and as far as I know neither has my friend

We had several dishes accompanied by a very small quantity of Beer and I think (from memory) our bill was somewhere around 1500 Bt

This, of course, is JMHO... but I am no stranger to good food

Others may have differing opinions.

On a positive note.....I hear the rooms are good

Cheers DS

I also had the crab & sweetcorn soup followed by Duck with pancakes and Hoisin sauce on two occasions. Food was quite good and portions were generous.

However the cardboard boxes with wine in the winecooler was a funny sight :GoldenSmile1:

I always concern about hygiene issue so i prefer central food festival for most of my meal or i just grab some burger from Mac.

You can't really moan about a chef tasting food I thought good chefs are encouraged to taste to check seasoning and stuff

I ate there 2 times last trip and really enjoyed the food!

I did not notice any of the problems you mentioned but I did have my back to the chef.

I love the hotel and will stay and eat there again next trip.

Thanks for the post, I am the owner of the China Garden so I am very intrested in your comments and will definetly feed them back.

Cockroach's regrettably get everywhere, I think our standards of hygiene is very good and much higher then most but we cannot completely eradicate every last stray bug in a tropical country! The little buggers climb up through the drains which are directly linked to the central drains in the street.

As regards the freezer, there is a small freezer located behind the cashier normally used for ice so I will find out why prawns were being kept there as there is ample chiller space in the kitchen.

The chef's do have to taste the sauces and food as its cooking to ensure the dish is properly prepared, I offen watch Hell's Kitchen etc and see Gorden Ramsey and so forth testing the food during the process, but I will stress to them hygiene as you are right its an "open kitchen" and the chefs should be aware how they act is being watched

Thanks for the feedback

Your right, its essential the chef's check the food is right before sending it out otherwise you will have over seasoned or spicy food !

Yes our Crispy duck does not have a really crispy skin, we season the duck, steam the duck so its really juicy and tender then deep fry it for crispy but somehow its never really crispy unless we leave it so long the meat dries out! So we stuck to tender & juicy over dry and crispy! We get the Hoi Sin sauce from China Town in Bangkok and pan cakes are made specially for us

I agree wholeheartedly.........

BUT....when the "Chef" tastes WHATEVER.....and then places the "tasting" utensil back in the Pot........ one has to question the hygiene standards.....

If a "tasting" spoon is used.....and then discarded to the sink for washing.....I have NO issues....but when it it is put back into the POT??????

Agreed, I will have the chef's spoken to tonight ! tasting off a ladle is unacceptable, its just lazyness on the chef's part.

My wife has just spoken with Bow (my overall manager) , she will intruct the Chef's tonight to stop tasting food off any ladle, really its just one chef who has this practice out of lazyness! The manager at China Garden has been instructed to keep an eye on them to ensure it does not re-occur !

Thank you for the heads up, I away from Pattaya a lot for business at the moment and value your feedback

Ian.

Thank you, a response from a true Professional.

I concede that when we visited , it was "Early Days"

That "issue" did turn me off....Big Time. and to be brutally honest, the food was not good....THAT NIGHT

I have been lucky enough, over the years, to eat in some of the best Chinese eateries in the world..... Australia (Flower Drum).....HK (many)....and of course China....all over, although I do prefer Shanghai

OK....I will try again......and give another honest evaluation...

I will be in town next week.... Tues thru Thurs....I will contact my friend & invite him to join us......as sad as it seems I will still have the same Lady with me.....lol

I will pay for my friends Dinner.....cos I want him to to give a "Foodies" assessment...

P.S. He tried to drag me into your new Rib place a few weeks ago.....He said it was GOOD... and he's a Yank.....555

But it was late, and I was "hungry" for "SEAFOOD"....so I declined

Look forward to saying Hello next week

Cheers John
