After Cyclone Gay went through the Gulf in the late 1980s there were dead bodies of drowned Thai fishemen and tourists getting washed up on the beaches of Koh Samui and other islands in that area, most of these bodies had been partially eaten by various sea creatures so the seafood restaurants suffered badly, nobody went back to eating seafood for many months. I believe the same thing happened in Phuket after the Tsunami, nobody wanted seafood for ages.
