I stopped staying there myself after a long run at it due to many factors, such as:

1) In need of refurbishment from the rooms, hot water to the gym etc...

2) Air condition overhaul and or complete clean out of the system.

My reasons for this is simply at the moment the PBR does not meet the basic criteria that other hotels in the same area are offering and at a cheaper price.

The PBR is convenient of course and this was why in the first instance I decided to use it as my base. Now as time has gone by and even with a change of ownership, it seems that unless at the very least my points were addressed then this hotel will eventually fall by the wayside as many others have before it.

So in summary, No, I would not stay at the PBR again. There are just too many hotels of better quality and lower price to choose from all in the same area.

Thanks Brewster , any idea when the construction will be finished ?

I've heard that it has but I'll know for myself in the next couple of weeks.

I've been a loyal customer since the PBR opened and have probably stayed there more than 300 times. I do agree though that it might soon be a time for a change as it is beginning to look a little worn. For me, I have to balance the fact that all the staff know me and I have a room guaranteed for me at short notice whenever i want it (I live in Bangkok).

Stayed December 27th until Jan 3rd. Room 209 second floor smoking. I found the room to be a tad antiquated and in need of renovation. Shower was warm but lacked pressure. However, the bed was comfortable and the service above average (great desk staff allowed very early check in--11 am and were always friendly). The hallways leading to the room are a bit bleak during the day as they turn off the lights. The location is reasonable but expect to walk a fair amount to get anywhere. Motorcycle service about 200 meters away at Avenue Mall as is a Villa Supermarket and 7-11. No creepy creatures in the room during my visit and the room cleaners did a good job at tidying. The air con worked well though never had it below 21 Celcius. The free breakfast was decent and featured the usual hot dishes from a limited menu. Room service was average with a small selection of Thai and Western dishes. There is a fridge (unstocked). I stayed at LK Metropole on my last trip and found the quality of accommodations to be superior to PBR. I paid on average 1400 B per night at the PBR. I would likely not repeat as there are superior options available at a similar price. Booked transport to BKK through hotel and car arrived 20 minutes late.

For many years I have looked for similar options to the PBR in peak season. The only one I could find was the Dynasty Inn. However my recent stay there was not that great.

I would be curious as to which hotels you gents refer to that are similar in price but are superior in the same area. I found that in high season all hotels are priced quite closely.

Thanks in advance

I used to always stay there (see my recent review from 0ctober 2011 in my TR) - but I will not be staying there anymore

Main reason is that the prices are ridiculously high in high-season - and the hotel has not been refurbished to justify such price hikes when surrounding hotels are not increasing their prices

For short-stays I stay at Soi Diamond for 999 baht - can't get any closer to the action than that

For longer stays I will find a new hotel as I might be going there in Feb/March 2012 for 6 weeks

I was informed by a very reliable local source that PBR now charges a joiner fee of 500 Baht per "guest"

Over Xmas and NY I stayed at the Residence Gardens. Ok I admit it is a little out of the way, but you can still easily walk to MS.

The hotal is located on the road to Jomtien so there is always heaps of Baht buses going back and forth. Family Mart across the road.

The best this about the rooms is that they are more like a small Apartment, with a seperate bedroom. For me this is great. I get up early to watch BBC news of the world etc. and the girl(s) can sleep. They REALLY do love sleeping in a large clean bed with AC.

The staff are really great and no extra charge for a guest or even two.

Has two pools, one is around the back.

Price off season is 1450 Baht (check current rates) and 1800 baht high season. Ask for the FLB discount.

Many guests there were multiple visitors.

Not a big hotel and mostly single men. There were a couple of families but as the hotel is open and spread out, this was not a problem.

I recommend this hotel. Book for a night or two and see for yourself. Much better than PBR IMHO.

My only regret is that I did not manage to meet the two women living acroos the street who I saw on a couple of occasions. One a young women and the other more mature. They would have been a great team. Next time perhaps.

Often there is women hangin around the family mart, looking to make a few extra Baht.

The masaage place across the road and up 50 metres had one lovely girl with a great set of tits. Another target for next time.

This is where I will be staying next visit in April.

Cheers

They haven't changed the info on their website so I'll go ahead and assume that's total bs.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ:

Q: Are you joiner/over-night guest friendly?

A: Yes, all joiners or over-night guests are always welcome with a smile by all of our staff.

Q: Is there an additional charge for joiners/over-night guests?

A: All of our rates quoted are for 1 or 2 persons sharing the same room. Therefore, if a single guest brings back a joiner, there is no additional fee. If you have a third person in the room, there is an additional charge of 500 baht per person, per night.

No change on joiner fees at PBR - i.e. there is no fee for one guest, and although they seem to be reserving their right to charge for a 3rd person, I've yet to hear of this ever being applied.

I've stayed at the PBR 3 times - these days tend to stay in the LKs just around the corner. Is still an awesome deal (low season only) if you're staying more than the 7 days in the standard room. The staff are superstars - never any issues with bills or checking out etc..

I just think its a crap deal for high season - but if i was looking for a place low season, would still definitely consider the PBR.

I love PBR, however, I have to agree that in high season there are plenty of other options for 1500b (1399 + 7% gov.tax) that are better or as good.

I'll continue to stay there in low season for the time being, but will be looking for other accommodation during high season.

Yes, when bringing a 3rd person to the room you might be charged, as stated in my quote from their website.

I have always stayed at the PBR and it has always been my 'thing' to get photo's of my BF's in more less the same pose - middle of the bed with the picture on the wall behind them (don't ask why-I just started doing it on my first trip). It has always been good, but the rooms do now need updating a bit. I always booked a room on the 7th floor and the bathrooms are starting to look worn out.

The staff are great and I have always used their transport, but now they have dropped the 7th night free deal the low season rate does not look so great.

The final nail in coffin for me was constantly having to cross second road to get anywhere - it's a fucking nightmare at times and after a few beers outright dangerous.

For my next trip I have booked into View Talay Six for more than double the price but I want a better quality of room this time around and the location is great.

My stay at PBR was about 5 times. Last time there, I made the mistake of bringing my TGF ( in a new relationship of no more than 4 months) from BKK. She wanted to see the gogo scene because she has never been to one before. Upon checking in, the desk staff that I have known from previous stay, blurted out "your new girlfriend?" she was trying to be cordial so cannot blame her. But my TGF did not take that well. New Girlfriend? The Spanish Inquisition revisited started in my room on the 7th floor after that.....

I stayed last October for couple of weeks and will say at this price point it is a good hotel.

Stayed at PBR late last year for the first time.

Good .... check in Staff , food, pool , the room was good for the price, always called when bf leaves.

Bad......airport pick up was almost 2 hours late..and when i called the hotel the driver was telling them he was at the airport waiting for me.which was BS because i saw him pull up.

Raining hard one night asked the staff out the front if they would give me a ride down the road ( in their tuktuk) towards Walking Street....they told me to get walking...

.some of the reviews of PBR mention that they will give you a ride..not for me.

Aircon aimed right at the bed.

Would i stay again......yes but only if the price is around the 1000bt mark. Forget the airport pick up.

Any updates on the construction that's been going on next to PBR?

It was all quiet when I was there 2 weeks ago. I'll be back on Wednesday so will update if there's been any change.
