Video Camera Mount For Motorbike

Recommended Posts

Some of you may remember this topic I posted: GPS Mount For Motorbike I'm happy to report the mount is holding up just fine.

Now, I'd like to find a way to mount my small, handheld video camera to my motorbike so I can take some videos while driving around town.

Giving it some thought, the only thing I can think of is one of those small, flexible tripods to wrap around the front of the motorbike. Unfortunately, I don't foresee that holding up very well. Any ideas? I'd prefer something I can purchase here in Thailand due to not wanting to wait 3 to 4 weeks for shipping from the States. Being a visual person, pictures would be great!

I would PM EDGE mate as he has looked into all of this.

First I tried the tripod mount.............useless.

Then I bought some of this..............images (1).jpg

I found a company in the UK that sells mounts. Ordered one for 12.40 UK Pounds and received it in 9 days. It's a suction mount originally intended for a vehicle's windshield, and built solid. I'll likely use it when I rent a car or truck in about a week for a drive out to Issan, then mount it on my motorbike in much the same way I mounted my GPS to my motorbike. Looking forward to getting some short videos of my drives around town, so am hoping it will work out well.

Just in case anyone was interested, here's the mount I installed on my motorbike. By "installed" I mean used 3 screws to attach it. 555 It's where my GPS used to be...I relocated the GPS to the left side.

So now you can operate your GPS without letting go of the throttle/front brake. 555555555555555555

Having seen the camera and how lightweight it is, I think I'd have gone with Velcro, but the mount does look impressive and I'll have a look next time I see your bike parked up somewhere - is it easily removed? :Think1:

A phillips head screwdriver and some elbow grease should get it off, but for what I paid for it, not likely worth the trouble. Guy I got it from shipped it from England for about $20. Just search on eBay for Rider Mount. The eBay ad said they wouldn't ship to Thailand, but when I contacted them they didn't have a problem doing so. I paid via PayPal and it got here in under 10 days.

As for velcro, that would not have allowed me to easily adjust the camera position up, down, left, and right.

I was thinking I'd just steal it LOL.

If you velcro'd it to your helmet you'd just adjust your head up and down na?

Let me know if you manage to fall down and capture a good one.. :hello09:

I have tried to shoot a vid with a digital photo camera - I just duct-taped the mini-tripod to the front of the bike.

This worked well, the camera was very solidly attached.

BUT: the video is very shaky and though I "de-shaked" it using a special post-processing tool, it is still less than optimal.

If I had to do it again, I would try to put the cam on my body instead, maybe the chest, to see if there are less vibrations.

Yes, camera placement is probably the most important thing. Attach it to the wrong part of the bike and you're going to get a lot of shaking in the video. The body of the bike, being the most solid, is likely the best location, but you need to attach it somewhere in easy reach so you can turn it on and off without having to pull over or risk a wreck. Where I've attached mine seems to be working out alright, although it's not perfect.

Yes, that's a very cool camera, and I've checked it out before. Were my website making money, I'd invest in one, but until then I'll stick to what I've got.

They look quite good and $300 isn't bad, but not available in Thailand presumably, so how would you get one?

Edit - Amazon $213 but $299 for new model....and with helmet mount for m/bike VDO - liberate your American Express Shivers.

Edit2 - looks like cheaper to buy direct.

Well, since I'll have a new motorbike come Monday afternoon (and will no longer have my current motorbike come Monday afternoon), I'm back to square one with the mounting of my video camera.

The motorbike I'm getting is a Honda PCX, and after looking at it, I haven't a clue where I'm going to attach the video camera. The windshield is plastic, which makes it a tempting location...just attached the mount to the windshield using a drill and screws, much like I did with my current motorbike, but I'm not certain I'll go that route.

To me, going from an Elegance to a PCX would be a retrograde step.

We'll no doubt hear your assessment, but not for me,

The Elegance is a nice bike for sure...135, small enough to easily weave through traffic, but large enough that my knees aren't in my chest, etc. But, I prefer the more relaxing feeling I get on the heavier, larger PCX. Just got to figure out how I'm going to mount my GPS and video camera onto it.

That'll be the heavier, larger PCX with the smaller 125 engine? :hello09:

Yep...I have no need/want for excess speed. I'm light enough the PCX will have no problem getting me down the road. If I wanted something fast, I'd buy a crotch rocket. I'd rather be comfortable. :D

I thought we were talking about the weight of the bike, not you.

"Excess speed" LOL - on either of them. :SoWhat1:

For those interested, I attached my video camera mount to my motorbike. I used a clamp and just made some slight modifications to the mount itself. It's much nicer since I didn't have to drill into the bike itself, and it's quite stable. I shot some videos with it today (2 Soi LK Metro, 1 Beach Road, & 1 Soi New Plaza) that I'll upload to the website, and that will tell me if it's better, the same, or worse as far as stability goes.

really digging this idea. I was nulling over the idea myself, but seeing as I rent my bike from DK I dont think he'd appreciate me drilling the bike 555+.

I am considering the camera glasses. 2,000 baht and easily used. Has anyone ever used these? I am wondering about the quality of the video in this instance.

Never tried the camera glasses, but there are a ton of "spy" cameras of various shapes and sizes for sale at a little booth just outside the Apple store at Central Festival. They can hook them up to a TV so you can check out the quality before you buy one.

While I drilled into the first motorbike, I didn't do that to the second one...it's attached via a clamp. You may be able to do something similar to your rental bike, or get one that straps to your helmet.

I will check out the cams.

Attaching on the helmet is not so good, because my head just keeps looking left, right and behind to avoid getting killed - it would make a lousy video.

The camera glasses I bought October 2010 were not that great a quality but good enough for YouTube (I'll attach a video I did later when on computer)

If you want the best quality I would go with the gopro 2. I'm a bit of a video camera nut so keep on top of what is out there.

Trouble is I have a tonn of Thailand footage and am too lazy to edit and post it.

I really need to do it!
