Just realised that I will be getting 777-200 with Thai airways flying from MEL-BKK. These are shitty old planes with shared screens. Darn it...Darn it...Darn it...

On the hind side, I am glad that my laptop has 8 hours battery life. Time to get some movies.....

When I read the first part of your post I was going to say get an iPad.

Yep....I'd recommend loading up the laptop and buying a good book.

Sleep if you can but of you are like me then that is impossible.

Enjoy the trip mate.

Take a few sleeping pills and dream about the time you are about to have. Have a great trip!

All right....Called Thai airways who confirmed that most of their air crafts have individual screens, but sometimes if they get some old plane then it may have shared screen.

This is what's being shown in Dec. http://www.thaiairways.com/thai-services/in-the-air/en/new-movies.htm

It it all a tradeoff. I got one of the new planes 2 trips ago and the seats were so close together that when the drunk, unbathed wanker in front of me put his seat back I could not read my book or watch TV any more. He was right in my face. I was almost relieved when they brought the old single screen plane back. Fortunately it is only a 3 hour trip.

I booked a 747 in February and it said on the website that these did not have individual systems.

I had to call Thai airways Australia and whilst listening to the hold music it said ALL planes have individual systems.

Not sure which is right but it is confusing....

I was under the impression that Thai Airways was quite expensive compared with other airlines. Why fly with them if they've got shitty planes?

Well...this time they are cheaper than Jetstar. I usually fly with Jetstar as its cheap, gives me Qantas Frequent Flyer points, can use Qantas lounge and hassle free booking system with no date change issues (at least I never faced in past).

They are the cheapest flights at the moment along with Emarites.

Both are going for around $885 return for my travel dates.

I picked Thai as it gets me to Thailand at 15:30 rather than after

Midnight.

Those extra few hours in Pattaya are worth a potential shitty plane IMHO.

Mate. Checked with Thai yesterday and they said that most of their planes now have personal screens. Will report back next week after seeing it.

The updating of Thais planes on all routes has been badly affected by the floods. (their maintainance centre is based at Don Muang) I know this means older 747s (no individual IFE) are still servicing the London route.

But be aware, having recently been on one of the refurbished 747s, I actually prefer the old school planes. The big old fashioned seats have a pitch of 34-36 inches and a level of recline not seen in any other modern Economy seats. The problem with the new planes is that under all aisle seats now sits a huge box meaning straightening your legs is impossible. Id happily forsake watching some shitty movie to sleep in a comfortable chair!

  • 2 weeks later...

Aren't the 777 one of the newer planes by Boeing say like 18 years old? And 747 has been around for like 40 years? I assume you are referring to specific model within the 777 line?

I fly out from California. So it's a 10 hours flight even to Japan. Or 17 hours direct from California to Bangkok. All of the flights I've been on has been individual screen with at least 20 to 40 movies selections.

It's a bitch flying out of California to Bangkok as it is one of the longest flight.

Yep, did that flight once. Now I use EVAir, arrive at noon, pick my meals, pick

my seats, get access to the

econo lounge in BKK and TPE ( hot food, free booze, shower) not the first

/biz lounge but nice
