At least 12 foreign tourists, including one Australian, have been injured in a three-hour fire at a hotel in Bangkok early today.

The fire badly damaged the Mandarin Hotel, which was being renovated.

The injured guests, suffering from smoke inhalation, were mostly Japanese but an Australian - Yohannes Hailab - was admitted to hospital, according to Reuters.

An employee of the hotel said the fire started in a storeroom near the lobby around midnight due to an electrical fault, and took three hours to put out.

She said 16 guests were taken to a nearby hospital.

The Bangkok Post website reported that nearly 1000 foreign guests fled the 14-storey hotel as the fire took hold.

A Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said: "Thai authorities have advised that no-one was killed ... consular staff in Bangkok have confirmed that an Australian man is receiving treatment in a Bangkok hospital where the embassy is providing assistance to the man.'

I stayed in the Mandarin about 15 years ago. Its only redeeming factor was its proximity to Patpong. Not too sure if that is a redeeming factor.

Anyway, back then it was a drab, dreary place and definitely not guest friendly.
