Fuhrer furore! Thai student Nazi dress-up day causes outrage

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2042097/Student-Nazi-dress-day-causes-outrage-Thailand.html

a.. Foreign parents and teachers appalled by the costumes

b.. Thai teachers 'did not understand' the controversy

c.. School asked to put the Holocaust on the curriculum

They had been meticulously planning their costumes for quite some time.

The annual summer sports day had a long tradition of fancy dress and, eager to impress, the pupils of Sacred Heart Catholic School kept their outfits under wraps for weeks.

They wanted to surprise their parents and teachers as they made their entrance at the school in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.

And surprise them they did. With a flourish and a fanfare, they revealed their costumes - to outraged gasps from the crowd.

Bad taste: A girl strides into her school at Chiang Mai dressed as Adolf Hitler, seemingly oblivious to the offensiveness of her costume

Shock: Smiling pupils carrying a Swastika flag were met with horror from foreign parents and teachers, who were left reeling at the bad taste of the procession

The smiling pupils arrived at the school dressed in full Nazi regalia and carrying large Swastika flags, leaving foreign parents and teachers open-mouthed.

Leading the march into the sports ground was a girl dressed as Adolf Hitler - complete with toothbrush moustache - seemingly unaware of the offence she had caused.

She was followed by a procession of pupils dressed as SS guards - brandishing plastic machine guns.

Stunned ex-pats were appalled. Surely the pupils were aware of what the Swastika and Nazis represented?

Under fire: Thailand's education system was criticised as it emerged that not even the teachers knew what Swastika and Nazi costumes represented

Apparently not, as it emerged that not even the Thai teachers at the school understood what all the fuss was about.

A teacher at the school said: 'It was all very embarrassing. Traditionally the students wear fancy dress on the summer sports day and they like to keep everything they are preparing quiet. Nobody saw any swastikas around the school before the event.

'But then on sports day when we saw these Nazi storm troopers we were appalled. We told the Thai teachers that this was not on. But they did not understand what was wrong with the display.'

History lesson: The school was asked to put the Holocaust - and Adolf Hitler - on the curriculum

Today, a delegation from the consulates of Britain, the United States, France and Germany descended on the school to protest about the controversy - and called on teachers to put modern history and the Holocaust on the curriculum.

They left the premises after the school told them no malice had been intended.

Chiang Mai is a popular retirement destination for many Europeans and Americans, some of whom lost relatives to the Nazis.

A British parent added: 'It could have been worse. They could have been marching to the 'Horst Wessel Song or Bomb Oh Bombs on England."

The school's principals did not want to comment about the incident, but a spokesman said: 'We did not know what the students had planned. No offence was intended.'

This is not the first incident of its kind in Thailand. In 2007 about 200 students from a Bangkok school dressed as Nazis for their summer sports day, Sieg Heiling as they strutted around.

Kanya Khemanan, a director of the Thewphaingarm School, was forced to apologise to the Los Angeles-based Holocaust museum Simon Wiesenthal Centre following the incident.

Rabbi Abraham Cooper of the Simon Wiesenthal Center said at the time: 'We are long past the time when such incidents take place in Asia that can be excused due to "alleged" ignorance of the Nazis' atrocities during World War II.'

Quite frankly the Thai education system is a joke that's part of what makes it so amusing to talk to many Thai's. This is not surprising in the least.

The Thais take great pride in being the only country in SE Asia that never succumbed to colonization. They consider their skills in diplomacy and negotiation to have played a big part in making them friends to all and the enemy of none. Dressing up in a silly Nazi costume might horrify westerners, but to Thais its not a big deal. Didn't Queen Elizabeth's idiot red-headed grandson get pinged for something similar about ten years ago? Also remember the swastika pre-dates national socialist Germany and WWII, and swastikas have also been used in various ancient civilizations around the world. It remains widely used in Indian religions, specifically in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, primarily as a sacred symbol of good luck.

Hitler got the swastika from the Romans, I'm pretty sure of that.He studdied all the ancient Roman battle tactics.I have seen socks for sale in Pattaya with swastikas all over them.I'm sure whoever made them knew nothing about nazis. They probably thought it just looked like a nice pattern.

Why should Thai people give a shit what a group of ex-pats think? In the UK we'd be the first to complain if an organisation kowtowwed to a bunch of immigrants. This kind of overreaction to the views of a minority special interest group, fanned by the (ironically) right wing gutter tabloid press beggars belief.

Oh & the first & second world wars ARE included in the Thai curriculum! :Banghead2:

Just a quick note.. The Swastika was taken from the Hindu religion, Hindus do not use or have used the Swastika ! The Hindu sign is called Aum, this sign was seen by Adolf Hitler to hold great powers and so took the concept of the sign and created the Swastika.

I have seen the Swastika on open sale in Walking Street, although as previously stated, it means something entirely different in Eastern culture.

I admit that I did find it funny...there has to be something wrong with the school curriculum if students are not taught about the horrors of the Holocaust. What I found amusing was the sheer innocence of the Thai students, not the fact they were portraying Nazi regalia.

I think the heads of the Thai education system should be invited to Poland to see Auschwitz to see for themselves what the Nazi regime stood for.

Only then will they realise. My ex wife went there and told me that what she saw deeply affected her.

That is correct.

Here is a short video about it...sure it's about the Korean ones but it's the same concept.

Hi mate as previously stated the Buddhist / Hindu 'swastika' is not identical (to the trained eye).

It's not the innocence of the Thai students, it's just that their history curriculum concentrates on the history of the region (SE Asia, China & India) as ours concentrates on European history. How many kids in the UK are taught in-depth about the Khmer Rouge, the Japanese occupation of Singapore or communist China?

Hitler & WW2 just haven't (greatly) affected Thailand & the kids understandably don't have the same cultural sensitivity that we do! :GoldenSmile1:

Edit: Changed a lo-so expression for a hi-so one.

And before anyone says it's a Buddhist symbol. The original version is not tilted at an angle as the Nazi version. And to dress up wearing plastic machine guns and hitler tash's obviously shows they had some sort of visual aids from which to replicate their costumes. Now im no goody 2 shoes but I find this disgusting.

I've been to both Auschwitz and Belsen Bergen on school trips in the past. Maybe I had it wrong but I thought something like the Holocaust would be taught in schools all over. Especially given Japan in Thailand up until oh 1941...

Im tempted to burn a few copies of Schindlers list and drop them off at the school when I pass through in a few months time.

Not only that, the word swastika itself comes from ancient Sanskrit, which is also the origin for the ubiquitous Thai greeting "Sawatdee"

Well, is Cambodia genocide teached in westeners countries at same level you expect holocaust to be teached in Thailand ? I'm not sure.

I think what did these students was not really appropriate, neither was the foreigners over reacting imo.

If there ever was a TIT moment this is it.

One of the problems this situation reveals about Thai culture is the student's lack of curiosity. If it was my school no matter how old I was. I would have gone home and researched what the march was about in the library or on the Internet. The blind devotion to what their teachers say as gospel and the teachers own lack of intellectual curiosity is what holds Thailand back. Rote learning and checking the box is the Thai education system.
