RATCHABURI : When it comes to finding ways to get in touch with the outside world, the convicts at Khao Bin central prison are nothing if not creative. And now they're taking to the skies, using radio-controlled helicopters to smuggle in mobile phones.

SIM CRASH: Officers seize a radio-controlled helicopter carrying mobile phones and accessories thought to be destined for Khao Bin central prison in Ratchaburi.

Officials at the prison in Muang district discovered the new phone-smuggling method yesterday after they found a crashed toy helicopter about 500m outside the high-security prison.

The toy chopper was carrying seven mobile phone handsets, four satellite phones, six Sim cards, eight mobile phone batteries and three phone screen panels. The items were likely intended to have been dropped inside the prison compound.

Pol Maj Gen Phetcharat Saengchai, chief of Ratchaburi police, said the prison's officials had received a report that there would an attempt to smuggle in mobile phones.

The seized objects were worth about three million baht. However, if they had been smuggled in to the prison successfully, their value would have jumped to as much as 10 million baht, officials said.

Saiphan Chiamprachop, 38, the owner of the cassava plantation where the toy helicopter came down, said he did not see anyone who might have been controlling it. But he said that, shortly before the crash, he saw a pickup truck rounding his property several times.

Khao Bin prison is a maximum security prison where many convicts sentenced on serious drugs charges from all over the country are detained.

Khao Bin is the country's first prison to be equipped with a mobile phone signal jamming system.

This was installed in response to the mass smuggling in of mobile phones by inmates.
