Dreaded Gut Bug

Last trip I was in Patts for 28 days with 8 of them spent with 2 bouts of some kind of Gastric bug. I don't know for sure where I picked it up maybe in the water although I have been very careful to avoid the stuff from the tap or maybe some dodgy food. Anyway how many of you have gotten this rotten bug and if so is there a needle from the Doc to fix it quick or do you just ride it out?

I've had it a few times and usually starts with the runs which don't want to stop for days.

 

Last time in March I went to the pharmacy and as well as the usual block me up pills they gave me antibiotics (Norfloxacin) which worked extremely fast and I was fine the following day. If it happens again I will use the same straight away.

Hmmm, antibiotics eh? no Pharmacy mentioned that, all I could get was anti stomach cramp pills and block ups...maybe a trip to the doc next time although I didn't feel like sitting in some waiting room while I was shivering and shaking and possibly change the colour of the decor ;)

Antiacid, peptic ulcer and indigestion pills may also help

Norfloxin is the best to use if you really have the bad shits! But remember to take bacilliactus (Good bacteria) capsules or powder so as to re florna your gut..Otherwise you will continue to have the shits as I did before and a few others I know too..the type I took were live bacteria which can be bought in good pharmacys.Shits caused by taking anti biotics stopped then within a day!..Also decento at 10/15 baht for 4 tablets sold at all thai pharmacys does the trick..This is what was used before Norfloxin...the shits cannot always be blamed on food but caught by not washing hands after touching virtually anything and then eating or chewing your fingers!! lol...

Its a bastard to have the shits on hols so wash those hands!!!!! I keep Decento with me on trops away at all times....Happy Hols

Thanks mate, sounds like good advice regarding 'live bacteria' but what is Decento?

Stay away from street food if your just visiting, drink plenty of water daily, switch to Sam mig lite, its still 5% but easier on the tummy IMHO

Imodium will help to stabilize your gut, get some from the pharmacy before you need it so you have some on hand ,or else you may have trouble getting to the pharmacy when you are suffering.

Disento comes in a foil strip bright yell packet of 4 tablets. the packet says" for the treatment of bacterial diarrheaa,dysentery, enteritis and gastro- intestinal infections"..Its what the Thais themselves tend to use.tried and tested so to say..it works for most problems and works in a day.for me anyway..

each tablet contains.

Diiodohydroxyquin 250mg

Furazoilidrone 50mg

Neomycin Sulfate 50mg

Phthalylsulfathiazole 250mg

light kaolin 250mg

 

This really works for most stomach upsets...scared me the first time I took them as it makes your pee bright yellow!

I had the on off squirts for about a month one day ok the next back again.Put it down to the beer and food being spicy..after trying the usual imodium and then went again to see the pharmacy and was recommended Dicento..Cleared it up straight away..

As I said all Phamacys have it here from 10 to 15 baht even 20 baht is cheap..dossage 2 tabs twice a day..Always works for me and as I said the Thais always use it...

Get some As soon as you get here and you should have no problems..Also with Norfloxin there is no drinking or they don't work..Dicento seems to work under all conditions! lol

Suggest you see your local GP beforehand

Explain to him what happened before, he will most likley give you a script to make up before you go

Imodium is a must aslo

A friend advised me to try Charcoal Tablets

Ill give them a go this time round

I dont think Immodium a good idea-blocks you up and retains bacteria.

The pharmacies prescribe a correct antibiotic which gets rid of it within 48 hours.

I've never been ill from street food. some of the best food i have ever had in my life has come from them

My post was directed at the OP who obviously is not as lucky as you, what I meant was tucking into dodgy meat and pineapple on a stick, or a chicken leg that's been lying out all day, is not going to help him, it was not particularly aimed at noddle stalls or the like, but even these places are not good for a guy that has a history of stomach problems while he is here, the added "benzine" does not help

 

What's to "fear" about Thai food, its one of the most popular cuisines in the world, just use common sense where you eat it.

Hey I forgot about that one....Yeah I did swim at a beach near Jomtien a day or two before I got the first bout and then somewhere around Raion. We had to go by train from Patts then a motorbike taxi to some beach, there was a big Tanker parked in the bay at the end of a huge wharf. That was just before I got the second bug. I did think about it at the time but dismissed it and put it down to something I drank or ate.
