I've just googled the name & found this place is located in Northern Thailand, way up on Route 1 about 55km south of Lampang. (if that's correct?)

Teak Door has a bit about it with some pics. But it's not really anywhere near the Northeast (Issan) & this is the Issan forum.

I'm pretty sure that the OP is asking about Nong Bua Daeng in the Chaiyaphum province which is definitely in the Issan region.

Things to do in this area.....visit Tat Ton waterfall although as you are visiting in the cold season the Thais might not be keen to go. On the road from NBD to Tat Ton you pass a temple on the mountain that you could stop at. There is a good viewing point, some not very well looked after animals and an interesting representation of the Buddhist version of hell.

To the north of NBD is Kaset Somboon which has a very pleasant resort called Barry House. Barry and his wife are very nice hosts, the Thai food is good the western menu is pretty basic but tasty, excellent swimming pool, aircon bungalows 500baht per night but I believe there is a price rise due soon.

You can go rafting on the reservoir just to the north of Kaset. There are several sizes of raft to hire from bamboo ones that hold about twenty up to a large double decker steel on that can hold over a hundred. You can take your own food and beer or order it to be delivered from your raft.

I'm prety sure 'rock' means Nong Bua Daeng in Chiyaphum province as well. About 45 km out of Chaiyaphum. I live pretty close to there.

Do you have the use of a car when you are here 'rock'?

If not then you are pretty much restricted to the things 'thinkingallowed' says. There is a good sized ex-pat community in the area so you will not be short of farang company if you decide you want a few drinking buddies while you're here. There is Joe's bar in Nong Bua Daeng. There is a couple of karaoke bars in town now as well. There are nearly always a few farangs here on holiday also, visiting the area wih their Thai girlfriends, meeting the Thai family etc. The place is turning into a mini Pattaya for f***s sake.

If you're lucky there might be a funeral to visit while you're here. it sounds morbid but they can be good parties - all night drinking, gambling and music. Your wife will no doubt find out if there has been a death when she speaks to family and friends after you arrive. Your wife might also be able to take you along to one of the local 'casinos' - illegal gambling dens - so you can see rural Thais gambling in secret places in the paddy fields and Jungle. If there is a police raid it can make it more fun. You could also ask your wife to find out where the local cottage industries are and go and pay them a visit. For example, a while ago I went to see a sausage factory - just a little place in the back of someone's house making the spicy Larb sausages - after seeing that I will never buy a sausage from a Thai street vendor again. These are all things you might not normally see on holiday and they are all available in this area.

If you have a car then my advice would be to use it to travel further afield - take long days out - go see the sights in Khon Kaen. Get out to some other waterfalls and temples. Get a copy of 'Lonely Planet' or another travel guide and look what there is to see near Khon Kaen and Chaiyaphum. Then use NBD as a base - start your days early and finish them late.

Up the road there is the resort in Kaset Sombun, and then a little further afield in Phu Khieo and then in Chumphae there are other farang bar/restaurants.

EDIT In - Just remembered that also opening soon (due to open on 1st January 2012) is a Tiger Zoo on the road from Chaiyaphum to Nong Bua Daeng. Chaiyaphum also has a small 3 screen cinema that shows Thai language movies, and it also has a golf driving range.

My reports come from the front line.
