Hey all, hopefully you don't mind a Newb Tube posting a new topic here. Gosh I hope this is a new topic. Well here it is. I've seen some excellent pictures on this forum, especially some of the trip reports. I've also seen some not so great photos due to whatever factors. So, my question is for those who have taken some good pictures and those who would have liked their pictures to have come out better, what camera were you using and any tips or advice as I plan to take a lot of naughty and not so naughty pictures on my trip. I may even depending on the responses I get from this be buying a new camera to take with me.... If this is not a new topic I apologize ahead of time.

I am not really the best person to advise on cameras although I am more than happy with my Canon EOS 550D however there is a great thread on Thai girl photography here that I am sure you will find useful.

My DSLR is a Nikon D90, I have a Canon S95 which is great in low light and perfect size to pop in your pocket for a night out, really great compact.

Yesterday I bought a Sony DSC-HX9V, which I will be playing with this weekend but looks fantastic and seems really easy to use, with some great features, so hopefully will get some good shots on my next trip

If it floats, flies or fucks It's probably cheaper to rent ...

leadpencil, I've actually been looking at some of the EOS models not specifically for this trip but just in general. You say you're pretty satisfied with it, if you wouldn't mind, could you post a couple of pics or direct me to some of the pics you took with it to get an idea of how it performs. Thanks.

Stillearly that does sound like a bonus to have one that you can just pop in your pocket. I may have to look at that for that reason alone. Thanks for the tech recommendations.

Right on, I'll definetely have to look at some reviews for that one. Do you have any pics you have taken that you wouldn't mind showing so I can see the quality? If not that's cool, after all I am still a Newb

I have two cameras I take. I carry a Canon XSi which is my DSLR and I carry a Canon 1400IS which is small and fits in my pockets. If you go the DSLR route realize that whatever brand you go with you are buying the brand for more or less life. Without getting into the technical details of lens mounts and adapters but buying the camera is the cheap part. The various lens you will purchase can run just as much or more than the body. Unless you plan on taking up photography on a serious level skip the DSLR. I would get a point and shoot and practice with it. You can get some great shots from a point and shoot and they are a whole lot cheaper.

Here are a few snaps that I took a couple of weeks ago. I am the classic point and shoot type person. One day I plan to read the manual and find out how to use the camera to its full potential however in the meantime it works well for what I want.

Hey those are some pretty awesome shots with excellent clarity. Juse point and shoot huh? I'll tell you if the inventor of the camera could see what is being done with them nowadays. Shit I remember using film and how maybe one shot out of the roll might be good. I'm thinking about getting a Pentax K-x, any thoughts on that? By the way, all those baby alligators, did they come out of one mom? Where was that, an alligator farm or something in Thailand? And the fruit looks much healthier over there than our genetically altered stuff in America lol.

No idea how many crocodiles it took to produce that number of baby crocs but you can find them all at the The Million Years Stone Park , a good morning or afternoon out with a few girls. They love having their photos taken next to the flowers, waterfall and sculptures.

That's a very good pointer as I know that some don't really like getting their photos taken, take a shot of a beauty next to a beauty hahaha.

Nice shots point and shoot or manual? Very detailed. Amazing what digital has done to capturing the moments. No mistaking faces nowadays lol.

  • 2 months later...

Taking great photos depends on the person behind the camera, not the camera itself.

Don't get caught up in the technology behind the camera. Upon saying that, there are some camera far better than others.

check out www.dpreview.com they have some great information on camera equipment, from simple point and shoots to high end DSLR's worth 12 months of Devils Den favours and Iron Club bell ringing heh heh heh...

Read up on framing pictures, most people always put the main subject smack in the middle of the frame, while moving the camera up and lowering the subject makes fot a better pic, arjanj9's pics are a good example the first two frame the subject correctly (other than the bloker in the foreground) whereas the third leaves a lot of grey at the bottom (which by the way can play havoc with automatic metering, because most automatic metering is optomised to 13% grey as white this is why it is difficult to get true whites)

Hate to bring up an old thread but after searching for Sony hx9v your post came up.

I am looking for a better camera than my crappy $100 point and shoot job and this came up as the front runner in possible purchases.

I particularly liked that it has great movie capabilities and that it performs great in low light and zoom.

Also the feature where you can blur the background sounds great also....

What are your thoughts on it after using it for a few months.
