Internet Access for Smart Phone

CatPeeler

Recommended Posts

The last time I was in the LOS, I brought an old raggity phone that I used just for calling and sending texts.

Now, with more experience and 6 months of being in contact with many new girls via Facebook and the dating sites, I'm thinking that having full internet access on my phone is going to be essential.

This is most likely a dumb question, but can I get a pre-paid SIM card at Suvarnabhumi that will also give me full internet access? About how much does it cost? I'll be in Thailand for 14 days.

I'm no expert in this, but I have an Iphone 4 I and usually get my micro sim topped up when I'm in Pattaya so I get the 3 g access.

Maybe you can do it yourself now buy getting a true simcard with a data plan in 7/11.

Maybe it's not the best price but there is a guy in Central who sorts it for me in 'Powerbuy' I think the shop is called in there he has a small 'True' phoneshop. If you pay around 3-500 B you'll have a lot of data for the 14 days.

True has an English language website you can check out.

You can get a SIM at the airport no problem at all.

I would recommend AIS 1-2-Call they have 3G in Bangkok and Pattaya ( last week finally ) with a prepaid SIM you can add unlimited 1 month internet for only 800 Baht. If you are only going to be in town for a week or so then 399 will get you 3Gb of bandwidth.

This is the link for the web http://www.ais.co.th/12call/en/simcard-one2call-netsim-3G.html but pricing is out of date.

I got a DTAC card at the airport with 1gig of data for B499 I think. There are various options and maybe better ones if you have time to shop around the various vendors at the airport.

I have AIS and I pay 350b for 100 hours. If you like to keep connected and auto checking of sites and such .. the unlimited is the way to go.

"And were you pleased?" they asked Helen in Hell.

"Pleased?" answered she,when all Troy's towers fell;

And dead were Priam´s sons, and lost his throne?

And such a war was fought as none had known;

And even the Gods took part; and all because

Of me alone! Pleased?

I should say I was!"

Those of you getting sim cars in LOS, do you have an iPhone 4 and how did you get it to work?

1-2 Call (AIS Company) is a nightmare for data service, the phone networking is excellent (the best in Thailand) but when you want internet services is one of the worst.

Don't forget that the real "3G" (HDSPA) is NOT available YET with 1-2 Call in Pattaya, it is EDGE service slower than 3G, only TRUE got the 3G service, but heard DTAC got it now recently.

I tested all the 3 companies (True, DTAC and AIS), the best one for 3G is TRUE but their phone networking is horrible, when i called some giks in Issan or Samui/Phuket i had some issues and my phones calls sometimes never arrived, their 3G is good anyway and fast.

DTAC has got the reputation to have the best deal "all in one" 850 baht unlimited data, most of the geeks in Bangkok got this package and the network is good.

If you want only a phone for call with a good network, stick to 1-2 Call.

best package all in one, DTAC

best 3G service in my eyes : TRUE

correct me if i'm wrong, but i think it's up to date.

I have an unlocked US Tmobile G1/google (i.e. 1st android 3G phone). It is several years old but is a quad band/international 3Gphone. I used it when I relocated to Canada from US 2 years ago for a year. Trick was picking Canadian carrier that matched the phone's 3G technology/frequency. From an expert forum (howardsforum) I was pointed to a specific carrier with which my phone would operate on 3G. Other carriers would work but slower (i.e. edge). It worked well for me in Canada. I tried the same thing here but instead of checking a forum I went to Tuk Com and brought my phone's specs and asked them which carrier would support 3G for that phone. Long story short they said yes and then set me up with a carrier that only worked on edge for that phone, no 3G. It was a waste of time. Next time I will do my homework or get a phone to match local, Thai carrier.

The deals here such as the the DTAC 850 a month, is that net only or does that include phone calls? Is there one inclusive package with net and phone calls with one sim?

It sounds like your US T-Mobile phone is not a conventional quad band unit. US T-Mo uses 1700 MHz for 3G and so does Wind and Mobilicity in Canada. In Thailand, 3G is on 850 MHz which is unusual for Asian carriers. It is however a frequency used by AT&T, Rogers and Telus. Conventional quad band phones cover 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz. A handset that covers these bands is often referred to as a worldphone. Newer smartphones also usually have 2100 MHz. Verizon is about to launch services on 700 MHz using frequencies vacated by analog TV so in the near future expect some 7 band phones!

bump, just want to ask again, do these deals include phone calls and internet?

Typically they have some voice minutes with the data package. Up to you which offer you take though. There are also data-only plans for internet sticks etc.
