Some of the members will recall a thread within this forum on Tramadol fairly recently in which the OP had requested availability at Pharmacies.

There were numerous responses but was of particular interest to me because had been taking Tramadol for 14 years anyway.

To cut a long story short I made the point in the previous thread that I had been to 4 pharmacies in Buriram who for first time had declined to sell-instead went to local hospital and got a supply via the Doctor.

Yesterday my wifes cousin who is a Police Officer (who until yesterday had never met) came to see our son as he has been posted to an area just outside Buriram. Wife chatting for hours as they do and comes back from bathroom with my tablets or rather the strip of empty ones that I had been trying to replace obviously in connection to the conversation.

For the next half hour wife gets the total lowdown on how drug classification and availability from Pharmacies has changed with vigorous enforcement of non prescribed medications including Diazapam (valium) , any sleeping tablets, Codeiene ,Tramadol, Amitriptyline plus numerous others all catching a one year mandatory sentance on conviction.

His advice was you MUST get from a doctor and you MUST be able to produce the box/casing it was supplied in. Thailand is cracking down hard to satisfy its American paymasters apparently.

We have been warned !! No more popping up Soi Buokoew !!

Yes i have f´heard too that bringing sleeping medicine to thailand is illegal.

I have usually used Diazepam (valium)for sleeping when i in pattaya.

I have noticed that some pharmacy sell you valium if you ask and some not.

Do you really mean that if i have 10 tablets valium in my pocket,

and police find that i can promblems with police.

Diazapam (Valium) has ALWAYS been on the hit list !!

You'll without question have problems with Valium (I think its class B in Thailand but stand to be corrected) in your pocket but NOT if you get via a doctor and have the original package they were provided in-thats really the point Im making-get it legally and no problem whatsoever.

Thanks for the warning. I use sleeping tablets from time to time but I don't think they are in the same league as valium.

I am interested as to why you think it is the Americans how are demanding them to do this. Surely they are doing it for the health of their own people? I doubt the Americans would give a shit about a non-American taking valium in another country. In fact if it was an American product I am sure they would be happy for them to do so.

No idea Buddy.

That info came from Plod re the Americans. Probably the usual American hard talk on drugs in general I would guess ??

Thanks very much for the heads up.

I have some sleeping tablets for the flight because I hate flying, they were given to me by a chap on my last trip who I met on the journey home. I won't be taking them to LOS.

My Doctor will prescribe me something which will have the label on it, and the name and address of the Doctor's surgery

I would imagine that if there is any outside pressure being applied on Thailand it's originating with the manufacturers and flowing on through their respective Governments.

The pharmaceutical industry is a multi-billion dollar group and well able to apply political pressure for its own benefit.. I would think that the real issue, if this is the case, is the ready availability of generic products in Thailand. If all the stuff sold was original, I doubt if anyone outside Thailand would give a damn.

All the drugs I've seen mentioned require a script to purchase in Australia apart from Codeine (which is sold at the discretion of the Pharmacist). The reasoning behind this is that they can be addictive and can have severe side effects. I appreciate that a lot of BM's self-medicate, even I cheat these days with Apcalis, however I was careful to monitor for adverse effects and to titrate my dosage up from a minimal amount. I've seen too many patients get carted off to Emergency with bad drug reactions to be blase about taking med's.

In other words, please be careful chapsbiggrin.gif.

Cheers

I went into the pharmacy next to Tims on 2nd road and ask for the "strongest and best pain killer that won't kill me". She offered Celebrix which I have been taking for my back. I asked for anything better and was offered Tramadol. However a quick lookup of drug interactions revealed that it severely interacted with another medication I am using so I declined. I'll stick to Voltaren 100 and play it safe.

Indeed better to be safe than sorry.

To the Moderator who moved the thread it was my intention to put it in this forum initially but felt it was specifically important to catch a wider viewing in the top section ??

Found this: http://www.siam-legal.com/litigation/criminal-defence-drug-offences-in-thailand.php

Does not look good especially because all of the schedule 4 substances are readily sold at most pharmacies in Pattaya.

I usually have a lot of trouble sleeping when I'm in Pattaya and sometimes take Alprazolam, which the local pharmacy was kind enough to recommend me, does anyone know how easy it is to get a prescription in Thailand (I only use it in Pattaya and on the flight home) and if that is truly enough to keep me safe?

When I was in Bangkok last year I went to several pharmacies located along Sukhumvit road near Asoke BTS station. I asked them for medication to help me sleep, and they all said I needed to go to the doctor. One only had natural herbs, one reacted in an agitated manner as if I was asking for yabba or something.

In terms of carrying prescription meds on the trip, on the flight over to Thailand I take vitamins and supplements so usually no issues. I've also taken propecia but the bottle has doctor and script info on it. But never had any issues with what I carry through U.S. customs at the airport.

On the flight back the only time my carry on was checked was right before you go downstairs to your departure gate. There's a small group of airline workers there who pat you down and have you open your carry on. I suppose there's a risk of one of them finding prescription meds you got over the counter, but who knows. No one said anything about the zithromax I purchased at the airport pharmacy.

Yes unlikely anyone is going to be interested in Zithromax as an antibiotic ??

Thats the crux of the problem re cost.

Valium 10mg is normally 5 baht each (and thats utter rip off) as in Buriram they are 1 baht in the pharmacy (or were !)

But Memorial I understand is around 1000 baht to see a doctor whereas top whack here is 150 baht.

Small clinics that the Thai girls go to are around 150 baht and are dotted everywhere in Pattaya,

Thank you very much for the answer

I think it is small cost of pay 1000 baht for taking no risks

How many tablets they give you after one visit memorial ???

Price per tablet ???

The tablets were peanuts just 5 baht each, maximum of 30.

Try one of the clinics dotted around-wont be anything like 1000 baht to see doctor-as I said even in top hospital in Buriram its only 150 baht to see the doctor.

I have seen a couple of doctors to get certificates of fitness for driver's licenses and cost has been in the region of 100 - 150 Baht. I am sure the cost to get a prescription would be about the same.

I buy over the counter sleeping tabs from tesco pharmacy in the uk.

Are you saying thats a potential bust in los ? They are in a very clearly marked box with the tesco logo all over it.

They are ideal for the flight, which is the only place any one is likely to see them. (carry on luggage)
