Where do I go to get on the BTS? I've usually head straight to taxi rank where Mr T would be waiting to go to Patts but this time I'm stopping in Bangkok for a bit,

is it much of a route change?

Here you go bro.

Taken from the Link Above :

Upon arrival at the airport, look for the signs (as shown on the photos) for the rail link which is located at B1 level. Buy a ticket at the counter, ride the train and get off at your stop. The train cars however are like any usual commuter trains so while they do not have luggage racks or compartments, each car has an area without seats so passengers with big bags could congregate here.

You should be good 2 go

Check it before you Wreck it !!!!

If you have a Big Case etc or few Bags access is very hard to get up and down those flipping Steps when getting off and back to ground level.

Train does get Bloody busy as well with Locals

Actually, it depends on the train you take. There's a commuter train that stops at several stations between Suvarnabhumi and central Bangkok and also an express train that goes straight from Suvarnabhumi to the city centre, the express train is much less crowded as it's only taken by travellers, not locals.

The trip to central BKK is only 15-20 minutes with the express train. I know because I took it last week :) It's 150 baht for a return ticket, departures to and from the airport every 30 minutes from 6 AM to midnight.

The traffic in BKK is horrible starting from 3-4 PM. If you arrive early in the morning, you'll be fine. Taxi or airport link, up to you. If you have heavy luggage and arrive before rush hour, I'd suggest taking a taxi. If it's 5 or 6 PM, the airport link might be a better solution.

If there's more than one person, a taxi wins hands down as you'll be splitting the cost. If you are travelling solo, I think a major factor is the amount of luggage you have as lugging this around can be a right pain. I'd support the idea of taking a taxi over the train system as in the vast majority of cases, you'll have to either walk or take a taxi for the last portion of the trip. Taking a taxi is relatively hassle free for the most part (read up on the possible scams), reasonably priced (less than 350 Baht in most cases) and will deliver you directly to the hotel door.

I travel solo all the time and always avail of taxis. Traffic can be an issue as others have highlighted, but I wouldn't be overly concerned.

Just take a taxi all the way from airport mate,

If you take the skytrain, the station it stops at Makkasan city air terminal is a joke.

I stay 5 mins from there, but when you arrive their is very rarely any taxi's waiting,

And if you have luggage you have to carry the case out to the street

and try to cross 5 lanes each side of road packed with traffic to get to Petchburi underground Station (although I hear they are building a skywalk bridge to connect the 2 stations)

If you are lucky and do get a cab, u come out of station and end up crawling down onto Sukhumvit 21 asoke which is a permenant traffic jam unless its a sunday.

It's a farce mate, taxi all the way from Suvaranabhumi is the way to go

Seems you will be coming from UK. Thats a loong trip as it, why would you want to take the train with the hassle of carrying your luggage and all and then walking up to your hotel or taking a taxi that takes you to your hotel. Simply take a taxi. the driver will help put the luggage in the boot/trunk and take it out, and you get dropped right on the door of your hotel.

I suggest a taxi over the train any time, and being from Pakistan, facing traffic jams every single day here, i feel that the traffic jams in BKK are not that bad.

Rest is your call.

Do be careful about this. It isn't obvious at the airport which is the express train. The one time that I tried the train I accidentally got on the commuter train and that is horrible - very slow, crowded and uncomfortable, and totally not designed for luggage. The express train might be a sensible choice if you arrive at peak rush hour, but otherwise I suggest taxi every time.

airport to Phaya Thai 45 baht

Phaya Thai to Nana 30 baht

total: 75 baht

you can also take the option of a 30 days valid adult smartpass, 20 trips for 440baht + 30 baht issuing fee total: 470 baht. ( that way you'll have 18 trips left to spend)

So if the taxifair is 350 baht (does this include highwaytax? last time i went was still in Don Muang) , you get 18 skytrainrides for 120 baht. I can imagine some people will choose this option. As in my case, i can only enter my room at noon, i will be be flying in at 8 am so plenty of time. I will travel light (one sportsbag) and i am planning to get me a Thai simcard first, then upon arrival in Sukhumvit go find a Kasikornbank to open a bankaccount, grab some beers and a light meal. This might kill some time before i'm able to get a shower and take a nap.

I took the train last week at around 5 PM.. I wanted the express, but the next train was 34 minutes, so they said take the city line. It was 35 baht to Makkasan on that line. It was crowded and raining, I got to Makkasan in less than half an hour. But it was raining, so no taxis!. I walked to the subway station, It ws a hassle walking there and I had to open my suitcases for inspection. Went to Asoke station got out and had to walk around and find a taxi to get me to the hotel. A real hassle, it should be better.

  • 3 weeks later...

@tenedave

you take the expressline?

i take two times for now the train from bkk airport to city ... but i take all the time the cityline ... because the cityline have a connection with the other skytrains

at the time i used the trains, the expressline stop more early without the connection to the city-skytrains ... i think the final station of cityline was phaya thai and of the expressline it was makkasan (only connection with subway -MRT-)

now both lines run to phaya thai?

I have read that the express will now go to Phaya Thai. I guess I will find out for sure in November, because that's my plan.

I don't think the express line was going to Phaya Tai two weeks ago, but maybe I didn't look very hard. Not sure I'd pay twice as much to save 15 minutes. It's so easy to take the city line and then connect to BTS. Much better service into Suk and Silom than Makkasan.

We took the sky train to the Airport from Asoke going back hone in August. The train itself was convenient enough, however with a lot of lugage and a 4 year old to control the walk at Asok itself was a hazzle and they did not accept card for payment. There was no ATM iside the station so I had to walk all the way back down onto the street. We will probably use the sky train when we come next time, as it seemed to save time and we travel wit ht little or no lugage.
