My best suggestion would be to try goggling for sites that offer cheap airfares for the date you want to leave.. One site in particular that I've used is bookingwiz.com. I would also suggest checking with a couple of airlines. I know that Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific offer flights from the US to Bangkok. I've used both and at particular times of the year they often offer discount fares (I know that Cathay Pacific has an All Asia Pass promotion that they usually offer in the summer that's going on now). for the USA starting with the KAYAK website is a good way to get started.

 

Just out of curiosity I checked MSY - BKK RT leaving OCT 1 and got $1256

There are a number of comparison sites.

I have used Kayak. But also dohop.com is a good site.

And then you can look at the individual airlines websites.
