General dentist for cleaning / check-up?

Hi everybody!

In the past I have always had my dental check-ups /cleaning / polishing (where they use the silica-sand gels to polish your teeth and remove tartar) in BKK at the "well known" International Hospitals (Bumrungrad, BEH, etc..), but given that my teeth are (thankfully) in good condition (haven't needed a filling in over 9 years) I thought maybe I would try someplace different this time around(and cheaper?!--the Bumrungrad now charges almost THB 2000 for a general cleaning / check-up).

So, can a fellow BM recommend a good "general" dentist? No need for a specialty dentist that does fancy implants or orthodontics--just a dentist that speaks some English (maybe even studied abroad?) and has a good reputation--and a bit cheaper than Bumrungrad would also be great!

Thanks in advance!

If you're in Pattaya, I recommend [email protected] I plan to have my check up there in a couple months.

That is the worst place to go for a clean. I just tried it and the service was a joke. The "clean" lasted all of 5 minutes and they still charged me the full 800 baht. Best place i've been to is the dental department at the Pattaya International Hospital, but the cleans there are now 1200 baht.

Sorry to hear that.

I'll report back in October on how good a clean I get.

Well isn't that strange because I read this thread yesterday and in the afternoon I went to [email protected] and made an appointemnt for a clean/polish today. They quoted me 600-800Bt. I had the cleaning/polishing done this morning, before starting the young Thai man dentist gave me an inspection and said it'll cost 700Bt, I said OK. He did a very thougher job, probably the best cleaning I've had done ever, he took a very long time, about 45 minutes, generally the cleanings I've had in Thailand take about 20-25 minutes. It had been about a year since my last cleaning and plaque must have built up because he did lots of scaling and got rid of coffee stains on the front of my bottom teeth. So I was just there a couple of hours ago and I say they are excellent and did a very good job. Well worth 700Bt.

Wow, quite a differing range of experiences. Based on the (mostly) positive reviews, I will go later this month (mid-September) and give another report after the appointment. I was told by several Medical Doctors that the standard of dentistry really varies (with the US / Canada and Europe generally being the best in the World), but for something as basic as a cleaning / polishing it really comes down to the actual person doing the work. In the USA I've had dental "assistants" do the vast majority of the cleaning / polishing and the Dentist only comes in a for a short "look-around" to check for cavities, decay etc....but that is usually US $75 (minimum), so the THB 700 price is a bargain by comparison!

Whenever you go to [email protected] make sure your appointment is with Dr.Cherry she is a class act.

Four of us used her services last trip - for all different procedures.

Both I and a friend have sensitive teeth when cleaning - she adopted a procedure which jetted water at the same time as she cleaned - best 800bt I have ever spent, no pain, no sensitivity and a thorough job.

She is aware that her services are discussed on the internet and you could not wish to meet a more polite, humble and professional person in your life - she is not all about money like some of the people performing various procedures in Central and all her prices are printed in black and white before you start

Personally I would avoid the 'gay dentist' not because he is gay but because he seems inexperienced BUT a conversation with him is comical

In short its Dr. Cherry or nobody for me

Cheers for the recommendation, Socrates! Your "sage" advice fits your moniker! I will post my personal experiences with Dr. Cherry later this month.

I have been to several dentists in Pattaya over the years and have to say Dr Warin Leekpai in Dental Care Clinic is the only one I'll go to if I need care. One dentist opposite TukCom said I needed a root canal/pins and a crown for 20,000 baht. I go to Dental Care Clinic on Pattaya Klang on the advice of others, I ask how much for a root canal/pins and crown? He takes a look in my mouth then says "who told you you need a root canal?". Turns out he hooked me up with a new crown for about 5,000 (saving me 15,000 baht), that was 3 years ago and no problems since.

For a general cleaning he charges 500-700 baht.

Here's his web site Pattaya Dental care

His web site is not that great but it does show his contact information and a location map. Also his clinic isn't decorated by some interior designer or have the latest huge LCD tv, so he dosen't have to raise prices to cover overhead expenses.

If you book with them, make sure you get Dr Warin as his wive is also a dentist there with the same last name.

I agree with your observations

It seems that a number of dentists are just shop fronts - and they arrange the dentists time around the appointments - so this type of outfit is best where the dentist owns the shop

Dr. Cherry also has a shop Paragon Dental Clinic in Pattaya Klang and traverses between the 2 sites BUT the prices are the same so the first sign of a good dentist (besides going to the hospitals) is that they own and trade in their own premises

This April I had some excellent dental work done by a Dr. Cherry at Central Pattaya Dental Center on Pattaya Klang. Is this the same Dr. Cherry. If so, does she no longer work at this location?

Pattaya Klang is her business premises - [email protected] is a site that she operates from in conjunction with her own practice - you can see her at either site.

Basically - "up to you"

But you said previously that the business which Dr Cherry owned was called "Paragon Dental Clinic". I believe that's a few blocks down from "Central Pattaya Dental Clinic" where I saw Dr Cherry. I intend to visit her again in January so I'd like to know where on Pattaya Klang I can find her. Thanks for your quick response.

I had my teeth cleaned and polished by Dr. Cherry at [email protected] in mid-November.

She did a very good job. Only 600 Baht

I definitely agree. The cleaning takes longer then just 5 minutes. I have had scaling done in the past and this was much cheaper than paying the 900 dollars I paid in the states which was separate from a basica cleaning. I dont know what that other guy was talking about but [email protected] was terrific
