The River Kwai

This is a definite "must do" for me on my upcoming visit to Thailand.

My dad fought in that part of the world in WW2, though I knew little about it till going through his box of medals and photos from the war, after he'd died. Very tenuous connection I know, but I do want to go and see it. My step-dad was involved in D-Day and I have visited the beaches where he landed and the war grave cemetaries in Normandie.

I think it is most important that we all see these memorials to the horrors of war and, as another poster has said, man's inhumanity to man, especially those of us who are lucky enough never to have experienced these things first hand. "Lest We Forget"

But...what do I know?

Well one of the most moving experiences was attending the dawn service on anzac day in 09 at the cutting and the morning service/ mid morning service at the war cemetry. To walk along the burma railway after the service and see the old sleepers that were laid i cannot describe the feeling. The cutting is a must to see solid rock i think it is 900m long and carved out by hand by POW's. Also the musuem of death along the river kwai a lot of drawings from the camps and photo's as well. from the musuem you can take a speed boat to the river kwai bridge, i stayed at the river kwai resort very nice food reasonbly priced bring your own grog to drink on the porch of your bungalow
