Warning.. Scam in BK Int Airport

Saw this article from a recent post in Facebook . Dunno if it's real but better to be prepared than face this ...

Must Read Information for International travelers,

This can happen any where

MUST READ.... BE CAREFUL WHILE TRAVELING OVERSEAS....

An Indian was detained in Bangkok for stealing a box of cigarettes in a

duty-free shop in Bangkok International Airport . He had paid for chocolates

and a carton of cigarettes. The cashier put a packet of cigarettes extra

into his bag and he thought it was a free pack.

He was arrested for shop-lifting and the Thai Police extortion price was

30,000 Baht for his release. He spent two nights in jail and paid 500 Baht

for an air-conditioned cell, 200-300 baht for each visitor and 11,000 baht

for his final release.

The Police shared the money in front of his eyes.

On top of that, he was charged in court and fined 2,000 baht by the

magistrate and handcuffed and escorted to his plane. His passport was

stamped "Thief". While there, his relatives requested help from the Indian

Embassy and were told that they are helpless, many Asians are victimized

similarly daily and letters and phone-calls to the Thai authorities are

ignored. He shared a cell with a Singaporean the first night who paid 60,000

baht for his release. The second night was a Malaysian national who paid

70,000 baht.

Mind you this was not in a shanty shop in downtown Bangkok

but in a duty free shop at the Bangkok Int'l Airport .

BE WARNED.

The above is 100% correct information because Mr.Rajan Khera's customer from

India faced exactly the same scenario mentioned above when he was in transit

at Bangkok Int'l Airport coming to Taipei. Someone who went through the

same ordeal in Dubai .

He bought stuff at the Duty Free upon entering. The girl at Duty Free put a

bottle of cologne in his shopping bag (he did not even see it happen). He

was arrested for stealing (this is before he even picked up his luggage). He

sat at the airport jail where he was harassed for the whole day.

NO FOOD, NO WATER for one day and only after he paid a fine (bribe of US

500...). That is all the cash he had in his pocket at the time. They let

him go.

These are scams that are happening all over the place.

Please BE CAREFUL!

All of this is pre-planned and the people who work at the airport know who

to target.

Unbelievable but apply caution.... the duty free employees intentionally put

extra items to scam the passengers.....

ALWAYS TAKE A RECEIPT FOR ANY FREE GIFT THAT THE DUTY FREE SHOP GIVES.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND WATCHFUL WHEN YOU ARE BEING BILLED AND

ITEMS PACKED IN INTERNATIONAL AIR PORTS (DUTY FREE SHOPS).

Please Pass this on to Others.... You may save someone a lot of agony..

I used to shop there on the way home but not since I saw an old decent looking British couple on UK television explaning their ordeal in the Thai cells after they were scammed , the same thing . That was several years ago . I know not all Thais are crooks , most are decent , but not these fecking cunts at BKK duty free . Vote with your feet people .

I have heard of this scam, but it is with passengers waiting to get the plane home.

They go in to duty free shop and someone put something in to your bag. (Most passengers have hand luggage) Then the police are called, and it costs 30,000 to avoid arrest. They have got you by the balls if you don’t pay you go to the police station and will miss your flight, and will have to buy a new ticket.

If you need to go in to duty free get someone to watch your bag outside whilst you go in alone.

Although this may not help since the airport authorities are in on this, but are there not advanced camera systems in place where upon review, it can be plainly observed that a staffer frames the unweary tourist?

The rules are fairly simple... never leave an airport shop until you have checked that your till receipt covers everything in your shopping bag, accept no freebies, and always have your hand luggage locked, (I use miniature padlocks on all openings, not exactly thief proof, but good enough to prevent any one from casually slipping something into your bag).

Absolutely. The ONLY shop I will go into is the book store .... because it doesn't have the name "King Power" anywhere on or near the shop.

I won't set foot in any of those perfume, chocolate, liquor, etc., rip off joints.

I wont go into a King Power Duty free anywhere.

After the extortion rorts a few years ago.

+1 here. The only and best thing you can do is to vote with your feet and money, its mostly overpriced anyway.

Yes, an old story, I remember this clearly a couple years back, still today I won't step foot in a King Power, actually none of these so called duty free airport shops have anything I want, I'll be at the airport this Friday on my way back to Perth I already have done my shopping, have nice gifts for everyone I got far cheaper than airport prices. I may get a duty free bottle of booze but I'll get that going into Perth. Stuff King Power, it seems they were screwing people and they have lost millions in income they never got as a result of the bad press.

  • 2 weeks later...

Like Above, this is an issue been going on since the new airport opened. I agree with others, will never spend a single baht in any store with King power even if they had the last bottle of bailys in the world.

What I don't get with these scams, is since every bastard is in on it, why even bother planting a stolen item on the person? Just accuse them of theft, throw them in a cell and wait for them to pay up, why all this elaborate shit? There's no proof either way, the person clearly knows they've been scammed, so what's the difference? Maybe the officers weren't party to it, but I doubt after the 3-4th time someone claimed they'd be framed, they could seriously not be part of the scam.

Same in China with the tea shop scam. Some girl strikes up a conversation and eventually asks if you'd like to go for a coffeee, where you end up with an extortionate bill, $50 for each cup or something. Why bother having a girl to bring you in.. just set up shop in a busy tourist area, and charge everyone that comes in who doesn't check the prices $50 for their order (hell, may as well charge them $50 even if they did check the price). Why bother with the extra step of getting the girl to bring you in?? It can't be a police thing, because if the police wanted to, it would be easy to do a sting operation, since I hear the girls target Chinese tourists as well.
