I have a young family and want to come to live in Thai...My wife is against complete commitment and would like to try it for perhaps a year before selling up in the

UK.... Is it possible to get a 1 year Visas or something similar, where we can rent and see how it goes? or is it all or nothing scenario...

Hmmm, I don't think that Thailand Visa will help you with living in New Zeland =)

You wanna mess around in Pattaya or you wanna live with your family in Thailand ? There's a big difference .

Pattaya isn't really Thailand but a giant open air whorehouse and your wife is not gonna feel comfortable here .

 

A young family , so i guess you need a job for income or how you wanna solve the money part ?

 

In Holland you can get a one year non immigrant o visa at the consulate (not the embassy) after showing a rental

agreement for a house or condo . Don't know if the UK consulate does the same thing but it would be the cheapest

and easiest solution .

 

I think you better make a trip to Thailand before you leave the UK and find a nice place for rent .

It's very easy , no special rules , just pay the money and a deposit and that's it . Enormous choice also .

Regardless of what has been said above Pattaya is one of the better places in Thailand to be living with a family. Besides Bangkok, it has the highest number of international schools in the local area due to the substantial number of Expat families that live and work here. Pattaya is also one of the few places in Thailand with basic infrastructure already established and continually improving along with well established expat services... simple things like western orientated supermarkets go a long way when living as an expat.

 

Yes there are distractions that can lead to problems within the family but from what I have seen from the working and non-working expat community once settled down the distractions become less and less.

 

For Visa, unless you are working here, retired (over 55 I think it is) or married to a Thai then you are going to be limited to the Tourist Visa or Education Visa approach to be able to send any length of time here, the Tourist Visa is going to be limited to 90 days at a time and you will need one for each family member where as the Education Visa from what I understand is for 1 year and you can include family members on the application. Best to go visit a Thai consulate or embassy in your home country and talk with them, they may offer alternatives. Unfortunately unless you are working in Thailand living here is not the easiest thing to do when it comes to Visas, unlike Malaysia where it is relatively easy to get long stay Visa and own land Thailand simply doesn't want long stay foreigners... only their money and once they have that its a case of get the hell out!

 

For rental or housing, book a hotel for the first couple of weeks and then visit local real estate agents. There are plenty around and you can pretty much walk in one day and walk into a house on a monthly or yearly contract the next.
