The Council for National Security has proposed the mass reshuffle in the civil service in April in a bid to weed out those officials clinging to the ousted regime and unresponding to the interim government, its spokesman said Tuesday.

"Civil servants in every ministry will face job evaluations and those remaining inactive, like putting a stick shift system in neutral, will be removed from their positions," Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnoed said.

Sansern said the upcoming reshuffle was deemed necessary because many bureaucrats appeared unwilling to uproot the tentacles of power left by the Thaksin Shinawatra regime.

The CNS expected the next two months would be sufficient time for bureaucrats to reform and boost their performance, he said.

"Boosting the bureaucratic performance is one of the proactive measures to flex the power entrusted by society to the CNS as the September 19 coup set out to bring about political and social improvements," he said.

The Tuesday's meeting was chaired by CNS chairman General Sonthi Boonyaratglin.
