Buying red wine in Pattaya?

toomuch

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to buy decent wines (mainly red) at reasonable prices in Pattaya?

My next trip I have a few days in Koh Samet, non-bar-hopping, and will need to keep my fluid intake up..

I'm assuming places like Central Festival may have somewhere?

Any recommendations?

Cheers,

I bought a bottle of red recently from a stall next to the supermarket in Central Festival. It's a Thai pinot and costs 250Bt, I haven't tried it yet but maybe go have a look for yourself, they have a pretty good selection and prices are cheaper than usual.

Any wine in Thailand is expensive as it is taxed like mad.

There is a Wine Connection shop on the ground floor opposite California Wow Fitness Centre in The Avenue on 2nd Road. They often do specials at pretty good value.

The wineshop in Central Festival supermarket is pretty small & limited. There is a bigger one in Villa Market, also at The Avenue.

Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination

Wine is absurdly expensive in general. Tax accounts for most of the price and Thai people do not drink wine despite having some excellent wine growing facilities near Korat and Hua Hin. Thais drink whisky, Red label but mainly Black Label JW. Advice for visitors is to buy 3 or 5 litre boxes wine. Very good value for money and can last a while depending on your indulgence !!! 7/800 baht per box is good value. Just check around for the bargains and the suppliers. Happy guzzling !!!

lol..when you do try it you will find out why it was cheap... :Laugh1:

'

That shop in The Avenue is a good place to try. Like others have posted the words 'good wine' and 'reasonable price' should not be used in the same sentence.

Why don't you put 3-4 bottles from you bottle shop from your own country and put them in your suit case and take them to Thailand with you , just get some bubble wrap for packing.

Try the basement supermarket on the left as you enter Central Festival from second road.

They had some nice wine in there but it was rather expensive.

If it flies, floats or fucks - it will be cheaper to rent !

Just have a good wade of cash in your pocket in case you get collared by customs. The limit is either 1 bottle or 1L, I can't remember which.

My recollection is that there is a limited stock in most 'Family Marts' in Pattaya - but at about 500 to 600 baht a bottle - not cheap. But it is drinkable!

Thanks for the replies.

Sounds like there are a few places to look. I don't mind spending some cash on wine (around 1500 baht a bottle would be fine). I should have made that clearer in the OP, but all should be good given the options.

Thai customs limits alcohol to 1 litre per person, so whilst I will be bringing one good bottle with me, its not going to go very far.

Thanks again for the help.

I always buy 'Mont Clair' it's a South African red which IMO is very good. Can buy it in most supermarkets 410 baht for 2L or 890 baht for 5L. That's less than 3 UK pounds a standard bottle. If you are not a wine snob you can't beat it.

IN 7/11 and Family Marts they do sell Jacobs Creek wine, for me personally i can drink it and dont have any problems with it :) Costs are about 600 till 700 baht per 0.7 ltr bottle..

I often used to bring a 2 liter cask of Aussie red back with me, in my luggage. But I stopped doing it because I'm not a big fan of red wine in the tropics, prefer the lager beer in Thailand. Anyway, never had any trouble bringing a cask of wine in.

Wine's for puffs , real men drink drink whisky !

But if you and your ladyboy are on a visa run , there's a shop with loads of French and laos rouge over the bridge from Nong Khai , lol

Just joking , I don't mind the odd drop , when I'm doing macho stuff .

I'll second that as an old red wine buff.

Wine improves with age. The older I get the better I like it.

You only as old as the girl you feel.

In Pattaya, your her customer not her boyfriend.

One note only: I think you can take only two liters of wines duty-free. If you have more than 2 litres you should declare to customs and you have to pay customs duty.

Thanks for the info, I've always put a couple of bottles in my case ..maybe just one next time!

How about Thai wine? They have been producing wine in Thailand for a number of years now but I haven't sampled much yet ..maybe this is taxed less than imported wines?

Life's too short!
