Safe to carry around a DSLR?

Recommended Posts

I feel safe walking around with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II with a EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, ( I guess it is the set up that would make you shit )

During the day for the most part Pattaya is safe, and at night walking street should not be a problem.

I'd rob you for the lens as its the one lens I don't have for my Canon because I am too cheap to pay for it since I rarely use anything that long. :Think1: So if I see you can I um... borrow your camera? :LOL2:

I mostly shoot outdoor, so if you are shooting indoor then it may be too long.

I used to shoot with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM, I honestly loved the distance I could get, that is why I use a 2X - Extender EF 2x II with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM but for sure I loose a lot of quality from the prime lens.

The pictures using the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM seemed to be soft. That is why I switched to the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM.

If we meet up, you can test out my rig if you want. But I won't be letting you or my camera out of my site..:)

Got to admit - the 70-200 Mk2 L IS is the goods, got more than my bahts worth on that one, picked it up at the start of the year... I call it "the daddy".

I personally prefer to be little bit more discreet, nothing screams wealth like a large DSLR hanging around you neck. Temptation makes the thief, just be wise in where you use it. Dark alleys at night would be a no-no, but during the day on the beach or a a local Wat would not be a problem. It get's really hard to negotiate a cheap tuk-tuk ride with a expensive camera around your neck. After travelling around SE Asia with a DSLR and compact, I'm really so say "Adios" to DSLR's for good.

Amen to that!

I bought a DSLR and have went overboard as I have gotten more into photography. During the day I carry mine around and take random shots of the shit I see. I was inspired by Nuff and life in Pattaya through his eyes. Usually I'm pretty good about heading to my room and dropping the camera in the room for the night and just using a point and shoot at night that I don't give a shit about it. There have been a few nights where the plan went to shit because the party never really stopped. I have jumped from bed worried I lost the camera. Then again I have woken up and looked at the pics I have taken not remember the full on porno shoot I have taken. biggrin.gif

In all seriousness just take precautions and keep a firm grip on the strap and be wary when you are in crowds and you should be fine. If you are a heavy drinker then consider leaving the camera at home.

Yep, gotta agree with that. If your'e into getting pissed and partying forget it because you probably will forget it and somebody may just take a liking to your kit.

In saying that, I have exited a bar in BKK that I like very much on Soi4, not Pattaya of course, left two phones and my wallet to go back to the hotel for you know what and a couple of hours later they were still on the table where I left them earlier in the evening. This is something I haven't done in Pattaya though.

Just be careful, I always wind the strap around my wrist for security as a precaution, a bit like putting your wallet in your front pocket instead of the rear.

Nice lens that 2.8.... I can only afford the cheaper one. The photos in my TR were all taken with a Samsung Galaxy S and EOS350 with 18 - 55.. seemed plenty good for what I wanted at the time. Can't be faffed changing lenses so would probably have the long one on another body but then I would look like a dick with two cameras 5555..

Take care, have fun and post some of your pics....

I use a Black Rapid strap so feel fairly in charge of my Canon40D

Been using a OP/TECH Sling Strap and while nice it's winning me over. I have 3 of them for my various bodies but I like the Black Rapid and may pick one up.
