Necklace Thieves continue to plague Pattaya

Banglamung police pursued 3 criminals fleeing on two motorbikes after they had snatched two gold necklaces from Christian Deletaille a Danish national at a convenience store in Soi Nong Ket Noi, Nong Pla Lai sub-district, the officers managed to catch the three gangsters in a nearby field.

Athit and Apiwat confessed to their crime that they had snatched the necklaces off the foreigner but stated that they threw them away whilst being chased by the police.

They said the other man named Ekasit did not have anything to do with the crime.

Police believe the gang may have passed the necklaces onto another gang member who was probably hiding in the area and that these young men had committed these kinds of crimes many times and this will surely continue as people don’t seem to learn that wearing gold necklaces in Pattaya is unfortunately simply asking for trouble.

Extreme danger is all Soi Buakhao. I saw on my eyes at noon when I was passing German falang. I was walking on the right side (better safety before motor bike) and I saw how motor bike thai man take off massive gold chain during 5 seconds. Be careful everybody all time !

Is this a huge problem?? I have always had a chain which never leaves my kneck!

Should I seriously concider leaving it at home? It's not the biggest ,chavy looking necklace , it's quite thin, but it's a good grade of gold

Advice Plz

Thanks

Necklace and bag snatching seems to fairly common in LOS, so most advice is not to make yourself a target and leave the expensive jewellery at home. Even a 'cheap' gold necklace worth only a few hundred dollars is a good steal in a place where the average wage is around 250THB a day (less than $10).

I'd be nervous wearing gold, I have a fairly thick silver necklace that I never take off and even that I try to keep under my shirt.

I wear a smallish gold chain (1 baht) it hasn't left my neck since I bought it a decade or longer. I don't feel like taking it off but I am aware of a a bit of a risk, however I am cautious as I walk around town, never get to close to Thai youths, and step well back from passing motorcycles, still I guess there's a risk here.

I wish the Thais would copy the Arabs and start cutting these fucker's hands off. 3 strikes and a swing of the sword.

Leave it at home.

I have heard of people being pulled off of their motorbike for a chain and I was hit by a motorcycle and as I crouched down in pain they grabbed mine. Fortunately it broke and they only got about 4" of the chain.

I now have a bootlace style instead of gold.

If it flies, floats or fucks - it will be cheaper to rent !

About a year ago while I was driving on my bike along Soi Kao Noi (dark side), out of a sudden a Thai boy overtook me on his modified bike and tried to snatch my farang gold chain. Instead he just tore my T-shirt and got away.

This incident taught me a valuable lesson. Since then I always take the chain off when riding the bike.

I wonder if you have ever heard about “different strokes for different folks”? I guess a bit more tolerance wouldn’t hurt.

I always wear a necklace but under my t-shirt. Never had any problem. But guys who wear big gold chains fully exposed are asking for it in my opinion especially with the recent gold prices.

A good girl gives you happiness and a bad girl gives you experience both are essential in life so enjoy every girlfriend!

OK guys I'm convinced. Today I took my gold chain off and put it away safely and went to Tesco and bought one of those silver chains from Lao for 99Bt. So I now wearing my crucifix on a silver chain. No yellow on me for now.

In your opinion maybe but not mine.

My charm has a very sentimental value to me and is very special which is why I wear it next to my heart.

I put my gold chain back on tonight and it's staying on. I really did look vulgar & cheap with the 99Bt silver chain from Tesco. So fuck it, I'm wearing gold or nothing, and if some cunt knocks me down and swipes it, well atleast I'll go down looking fucking good. Amen.

I don't agree mate sorry, I don't think it really impresses any one and you don't need to impress the girls with any more than cash so don't leave your self open to this type of crime its not worth it, its one way that can spoil your time here.

Just add on to Daveo's post, Living in Pattaya for about 5 years the stories of gold snatching are a weekly thing. The one story that stands out in my mind is the one where they tried to snatch a necklace and the farang fell off his motorbike and the car behind him couldn't stop fast enough and the car ran him over, killing him; meanwhile the gold snatchers got away. Why press your luck?

agree, extremely bad taste and blatant disregard for their own life.

showing any sign of wealth doesn't make sense to me. its a death sentence in most of the world.

Sharky doesn't post on PA any more, but was still running his Facebook page.

I don't personally wear any necklaces, gold or otherwise, but that's just my own choice (and the fact that I can't afford a really nice gold necklacebiggrin.gif). It's a bit unpleasant to see some posts deriding those who do wear gold, as each of us has our own personal sense of style. I'd no more criticise someone for wearing gold than I would someone who spends huge amounts on wearing designer-label clothing. Everyone wears what they like and can afford and they're fully entitled to do so - bloody good luck to them if they have more money to throw around than me!!

Cheers

I have a girl friend in Phnom Pehn that was phoning on a motorbike (she was not driving).

2 guys came on an other one, stole the phone while overtaking and run away. But the girl motorbike got unbalanced. They felt, a truck came in front and killed the bike driver. The girl got 15 days in coma. when she woke up, she lost memory. All her belonging had deseapered when she was incounscious on the ground waiting for urgences, including necklace and earrings...

Life can be shortened for nearly nothing in these countries. Better leave your gold at home.
