I was at Dentist@Beach for 3 times last week. They said I needed 2x root canel treatment done. On the 3 times I was there (cleaning, filling and another filling), I was assigned to 3 different dentists.

I don't understand why they can't just have 1 dentist do everything for me with 1 visit. They service and skill level of the 3 dentists varies quite differently. I may want to go back and have the root canel done there, but I'm concerned about the skill of the dentist as I'd heard in some places the root canel done was only temporary and a re-do of the treatment was needed after a few months.

Anyone here have an experience dentist in Dentist@Beach (or anywhere in Pattaya) to recommend for the treatment? Your experience will be much appriciated :)

I don't know about the particular Dental clinic you ask about so cannot give specific comments about them, but in general the standard of dental work in Thailand is good and often people plan their trip in order to have dental work done in Thailand at much lower cost than is their home country.

Cleaning is not usually done by a dentist - its usually a job done by a dental assistant or hygenist so that may explain why you had two different people treating you. Most dentists work at more than one clinic so maybe the days you booked in there were different dentists rostered on, hence two different dentists did the fillings. If you have an appointment and are happy with the work of that particular dentist, simply tell them that you want more work done and ask for a further appointment when they are able to complete the job. If you leave it to the receptionist to book the appointment you will find they will book a time and day to suit you and therefore you may not get the same dentist.

As for root canal treatment, you should allow three weeks because you need more than one visit. The first visit is for the removal of the root (can be a longish appointment). After the root has been removed the cavity is flushed with a chlorine type solution and then a disinfectant is wiped around in the cavity and a temporary filling is put in. At least one week is required before your next visit because it has to be certain that any infection bacteria have been eliminated by the disinfectant. If there is any sign of infection then the temporary filling is removed and the disinfecting process is repeated and you wait another week. When all is well they will remove the temporary filling and put in the permanent filling. So the stories about temporary fillings and needing to be redone later are correct and a necessary part of the process. What often happens is that tourists don't have sufficient time to complete the process so they have the root canal treatment with the temporary filling on one holiday and either have the temporary filling removed and the permanent filling put in back in their home country at some later time or they wait until their next holiday in Thailand to have the permanent filling done. But a temporary filling is only designed for short time use and shouldn't be relied upon for any more than the minimum time you have to.

sbf thanks a lot for the detail explaination. 3 weeks seems a bit too long for me, I guess I'll need to reconsider. The price of it done in Thailand is 50% off of the price in my country.

It can be done much faster, I've had 3 root canal treatments in Thailand over the years and the normal procedure is: Root canal treatment (drill out the root) and give a temporary filling. After that wait for at least 3 days (if you have the time, 1 week might be preferable) and come back for permanent filling (or crown) after that you're done. I had a root canal at home last month and it was all done in one apointment, got permanent filling directly.

With modern procedure, they will isolate the tooth they're treating with a rubber sheet, so it's more sterile.. If the procedure is done correctly chances of infection are quite small.

I've visited a few dentists in Pattaya and prefer BK dental on soi Bukhao. It was allways the same dentist who did both my appointments, but if you want to be sure tell them that that is what you want.

Thanks for the recommendation, just emailed them.

I do prefer a lady dentist as they tend to be more gentle, I would have choosen Dentist@Beach immediately if they had given me a lady dentist but they said they'll appoint a guy. I have a some dental phobia especially with guy dentist :Circle_Sharks:

Just a coincidence, but the one who replied my email for Dental@Beach is also a Dr Cherry :)

I had one done a few years ago, cost and bomb and hurt like fuck, and then a couple years later the bastard thing started playing up again, so I ended up having that very very expensive tooth extracted last year. So I'm not interested in root canal & crowns at all, rather pull the tooth and get an implant at a later date.

I had my teeth whitened at Dentist@Beach about a year ago. It was a woman dentist and I'm pretty sure her name was Dr. Cherry. Either she moved or she works at more than one place. Hard to imagine more than one Thai Dentist called Cherry.

I prefer a guy dentist for extractions. When I had that last tooth extracted last year I went to my usual dentist in the afternoon and there was this young and very small framed lady dentist available to do it there and then, but I made an appointment to go back later that evening and have a man. And thank God for that because he had a hard time getting that little bastard out, he told me the root was very long, longer than usual, so if I had that little lady dentist it would have been a hellish experience.

zmanz,

hope the following helps. im a dentist with further skills/ postgraduate expertise in endodontics( root canal treatment) in the uk.

There is very little scientific evidence to suggest a higher success rate in doing rct over multiple visits. the yanks in fact prefer to do it in one visit and have a staistically insignificant higher success rate. The onus ultimately depends upon the cleaning of the roots (some research suggests the placement of the temp fillings allows bacteria to recolonise, which is why doing it thoroughly in 1 visit may be better).

The important things that uou should be ensuring that the dentists does are :

1. Use of a rubber dam (this isolates the tooth from the rest of the mouth and dtops salivary bacteria from entering the cleaned roots during treatment. Insist on the use of this- walk away if they arent willing to do this- studies show that not using it is a major cause of rct failure.

2. Use of brand new single use instruments. You are in a foreign country and with the types of patients in this mongers heaven, you dont know whats left on the instruments from the previous patient. in the uk we are not allowed to use these endodontic file/broaches on more than one patient- this is a reason why thiss type of treatment is expensive. Insist on this and watch them peel them out of the original packaging.

3. The chlorine solution that one of the other bms refers to is in fact bleach. A 5% solution is best- copious amounts should be used to thoroughly disinfect the roots throughout the course of the treatment. This should be done under very light pressure to avoid it being expelled through the tips of the roots and into the surrounding tissue (very very painful and potentially permanent damage)..

4. Placement of the final filling has to be superb as this is what will stop bugs from recolonising your roots.

5. 40% of patients will experience some discomfort after the procedure- take 800mg ibuprofen 1 hour prior to the procedure and you will minimise this.

6. Have a look at the final xrays. all the roots should be filled within a millimeter of the tips of the roots. This is an important factor in success and ensures that an attempt has been made to clean the entire length of the root.

7. Ask the dentist to discuss the xrays of the anatomy of the roots prior to him starting- he should be confident enough to tell you whether he can do a good job or whether a specialist is required.Be awre that if it is an upper molar, it should have 4 canals-the reason why this tooth has a higher failure rates than others is because most dentists only find 3.

If done well, rct has a success rate of 85-95%.

Also, after the injection, ask to wait for 15 mins before allowing him to start.

Hope this all helps.

IF YOU STAND FOR NOTHING, YOU WILL FALL FOR ANYTHING

Hey. Thanks a lot for the input. Quite a bit to digest knowing little (or nut) about dental.

Dr Cherry from D@B said they'll try to finish RCT in one visit, but there'll be no promise as they can't be 100% sure. Will try to follow what you have suggested.

Thanks again. :)

:Grin_Jump1:

zmans: I have had a root-canal + crown treatment done 3 years ago at Pattaya Memorial: Rootcanal (3 visits/7 hours total) and Crown (midrange porcelan) total amount THB 15,000 (THB 5000 for the rootcanal and THB 10,000 for the crown).

The dental smile pattaya price-list seems more like it!!

I can highly recommend DR Cherry. I had extensive work done 3 yrs ago with no problems

Further to that I've introduced no less than 10 other people who all report total satisfaction with her work

She is a gem

A few months ago I broke a tooth and went to the dentist in Jomtien where I'd had cleanings done before. They said I needed a root canal plus crown and was going to be about 18-25,000 baht depending on the type of crown I wanted. I searched around on the net and found a small place near tukcom that got good reviews. They said I needed a root canal and a filling, not a crown. The total price was only 4500. Their charge for the root canal portion was less than half of the one in Jomtien. I did it every other day, 3 treatments of about 45 minutes each. My dentist was an older Thai man and there was no pain at all other than the mild discomfort of the Novocain shots.

I almost got scared off due to all the misspellings on their website but I'm very happy with the results.

Thanks guys for sharing your experiences. I decided to go with Dentist@Beach. Dr Cherry said she'll ask her Endodontist to take good care of me as I explained I had bad experiences with dentists back home.

Dental Smile Pattaya didn't reply my email after waiting for a week, not sure why.

Dental4u prices are indeed cheaper, but since Dental@Beach already had my dental record, I'll go with them. Thanks for sharing the contact :)

I certainly would not recommend Dentist@Beach to anyone. They advertise their clean at 600-800 baht for a 1 hour clean. I was charged the maximum of course but the clean only lasted 10 minutes, just a quick polish really. Much better at the dental department of the Pattaya International Hospital, they do a full 1 hour clean.

In April, I had some excellent dental work done by a Dr Cherry (new crown) at Central Pattaya Dental Center on Pattaya Klang. If it's the same dentist, then she sure does move around. On another thread, someone claimed she owned her own dental practice on Pattaya Klang called Paragon Dental Clinic. Does anyone know where she does most of her work now because I'll be looking for her again next January for some other dental work?

I had my teeth cleaned and polished by her in mid-November at Dentist@Beach. At the end she told me I had "No new holes."
