They're compressed files, so any sort of decompression software e.g. winzip. Loads of free stuff out there - just google decompression s/w.

Here's one.

Best software i have found is 7zip.... http://www.7-zip.org/

it is open source (hence free), very stable and opens also .zip, .rar, and other formats.

7Zip for me. Recently had some password protected zip files that winzip could not handle but 7Zip could.

If you are starting to deal with Rar files first get on of the aforementioned apps. Then, if you see Par files(repair files for Rar) in your download folder, get Quickpar. Nothing worse that getting a nice juicy movie only to discover that one of the Rars is corrupt.

+1 for 7Zip, I just find it a bit more friendly than WinRar.

Also, Winrar, which is pretty good, but unfortunately its not free.

I support open-source software and prefer to use it whenever I can. Some of the best software available is open-source; having many developers can result much better solutions. Take Internet Explorer vs Firefox; Firefox is way superior and has led the way for browser development in recent years with IE playing catchup.

Support opensource!
