Insects

Recommended Posts

Hi just wondering if anyone was brave enough to have a go at the insects that they sell on the sidewalk. Was offered a grasshopper by the vendor to try but chickened out. Sine watching bizarre food and man vs wild I will try it :Flying: next time I'm in town.

Please don't be afraid of them as they are quite delicious. Mind you, I have seen similar crickets being eaten in other countries like Mexico too. Try them next time and you will find it yourself.

You should not lose the idea of travelling that is to open yourself to new experiences.

I tried it one time already. I ate worms, crickets and grasshoppers. Grasshoppers taste similar potato crisps. :P

I tried scorpions, coakroaches and grasshopers.

Scorpions tasted like burned dark bread ,coakroaches were ok,grasshopers were horrible i got moist one inside almost puked it out.

If i had to choose i would go for the scorpions.

Some that I have tried have had a woody taste. The missus says the ones sold on the Pattaya streets are not fresh. I have since passed on the freshies. Some worms I ate were quite tasty until I realised what they were. I was concentrating on a game of connect four, and she was popping them in my mouth.

Imagine a peanut as soft as scrambled egg wrapped in a cockroach wing, and you have it. May have been a silkworm. :Oops1:

Tried the silk worms, crickets, bugs however drew the line at frog and snake. Just cant seem to get round the skin thing. As for the crickets/grasshoppers you will get all the experts saying dont eat the legs or the head. take no notice eat it all like the locals.

If it makes you feel a bit better have a few quavers on the side like we do.

Big Casino.

grasshoppers are my favorite, just have to take out the spikey bits on the legs and take off the head and remove the long bit of shit in there to enjoy.

The fact they're insects doesn't bother me so much but it's that filthy cheap oil they fried in and the damn things are sooooooooooo greasy. I've tried em and have puked em up. Why the fuck I want to eat that shit when there's a Subway across the road?

None of the bar girls I've been with liked to eat insects, they've always made weird expressions when we passed by insect cart and I ask if they like them.

I have been with many girls who have done that and after spending a few days with them and saying I want to eat some bugs, they will happily bring back various bags full of them and eat most of it.

I've tried silk worm larvae - were ok but nothing special. Mine seemed to be boiled, probably better if fried. Will try other insects next time but I'm wary of making a habit of it, because I've read in a few places that to harvest them in the large numbers required, DDT and other insecticides are often used.

Near where I live in Isaan there are some bug breeding farms they are kept in controlled areas so as not to let flies & ants get in with them. Some locals catch various bugs by leaving a fluorescent tube on outside at night over a large container filled with water in the morning they collect the bugs from the water, usually hundreds.

Years ago I rented a house in BKK with a garden and there was a big tree in the garden and a big red ant nest up between the branches of the tree. One day the gardener from next door, an Isarn guy, came over and knocked on my door and asked if he could have the ants. He'd obviously seen the nest from over the wall and been licking his lips. Naturally I said OK so he climbed up the tree and pulled down the ants nest and went back home looking happy.

By the way I've eaten a Thai dish called Yum Kai Mott Daeng - red ant eggs salad. As long as I live I'll never forget the fucking vile feeling of that shit in my mouth.

I just remembered that I bought some Maesri nam prik maeng da a while back, not knowing what maeng da is. Tried it, and it was truly vile. Tried it again a few times, to see if I would acquire the taste like with durian, but it didn't get ny better. Googled maeng da, and got these:

Try as I might, I couldn't get over the taste. Ended up turfing the jar out.

Back a few years I had an Udorn Thani missis and she always had her friends coming over to our house and they make somtum and other things. One day I wake up and walk downstairs to the kitchen to make a cup of coffee and I find a dead cockroach on the counter, so I throw the fucking think in the rubbish bin. About 30 minutes later I watching TV and I hear the missis calling out - "maeng da yoo nai? maeng da yoo nai?" (where's the maeng da?) So what I thought was a cockroach and threw in the bin was part of their lunch. lol...

I just love takaten (crickets or grasshppers in english, I guess) and every single time in bar the ladies ask me how can I eat them because not many falang do. Is that really so? I find it a bit funny as I can't handle spicy food that much (which is basically most of thai food), but these insects are not spicy at all, just salty.
