New Laptop on the way...

Righto, new computer ordered, currently being delivered, what things can I do to keep the performance up?

Its probably better than I require but I figure it should last awhile if I take care of it, I am not overly into computer ins and outs, I am a mad clicker and I always thought software was a comfy under garment.

Hints thanks guys.

I'm all shook up, uh uh uh, uh uh uh, oh yeah...

Is it a windows based system?

If Yea, then, get a firewall like Zone alarm (it's fee and effective). Also get an antivirus with anti phishing capabilities like Avast. Defrag it around once in 1-3 months.

Keep very little on it (so you dont have to do massive backups) then restore it back to new often.

Much better than having antivirus that is basically a virus itself by nagging you to update and scan all the time IMO.

Yep, windows, its a Dell XPS 17, 2nd generation Intel® Core? i7-2630QM processor 2.00 GHz, 8G ram, 1.5TB hdd, comes with Mcafee security.

Is Mcafee any good?

Mcafee and Norton are both RESOURCE HOGS

If your looking for a small slick security package (firewall and antivirus / malicious and email spam then look at ESET smart security.

Have used this for 2 years now and its GREAT.

How is the new lappy going?

Me being a serial clicker and porn enthusiast I am using microsoft internet securities and find that works fine for me.

First tried it on my desk top which I generally buy off ebay for $100 or so. If they stuff up simply get a new one (I keep a spare in the cupboard}. Currently on my 3rd machine in 10 years.

I bought a net book new approx. 9 months ago that came with a subscription to norton but never signed it on and went for the securities one instead. This machine doesn't get as much work as the desk top but is still working like new in any case.

I hope yours is working fine and please, let us know which anti virus you went for?`

Don't load up your HDD with hundreds of different software. Get you HDD partitioned, on the C drive keep your operating system, and a few installed programs like your anti-virus, firewall, and anything that has to be installed. Then load up the other partition with portable freeware, there's millions of programs out there just waiting to be downloaded. Then whenever you have problems you just format your C drive and reinstall OS and half a dozen programs - don't have to re-install hundreds of programs - just drag the shortcuts across and they up and running.

i have a powerful desktop for all my gaming and work, an ipad for portability, and my old laptop is the "porn station" - I would suggest using an old pc for you porn and keeping it off your expensive new laptop. I think porn is the number 1 reason my old laptop got so shitty..

my recommendations...

1- download and install "advanced systemcare". it's free. use it religiously. run it once a day just when you turn on your computer.

2- purchase acronis true image. imo, best backup software currently around. can create emergency bootup on flash drives and dvds/cds. do both internal and external backups at least weekly.

I totally agree with one of the other posters saying you should partition your hard drive. have one partition reserved for software. another for data. I use "minitool partition wizard" for maintaining my hard drive.

I also agree with the suggestion that you don't install too many applications on your computer. uninstall any and all "trial versions" of software.

in regards to antivirus and firewall, just go with the microsoft stuff. save yourself a bundle. I use microsoft security essentials. it's free.

a story...

I used to be third level tech support at genentech way back in the 90's. and oddly enough, 40% of my support calls were resolved by just running a "scandisk" and a "defrag". back then, I used the dos command - scandisk, and norton util - defrag to perform this task. nowadays, I found out that "advanced systemcare" does pretty much the same job. so, I use that. and yes, it resolves most of my computer problems.

you heard me right... 40% of my support calls were resolved using scandisk and defrag back when I was working. obviously, you don't want to use the old stuff with windows 7. advanced systemcare is the equivalent one to use nowadays. incorporates defrag, scandisk, clean registry, etc.

do a google search to locate these software online.

All good so far, I forgot how a computer is supposed to perform after dwelling on my old laptop. Gone with the mcaffee that came with it, no dramas so far and its not as in your face as previous norton security I've had. If your a bit more computer inclined a few guys put up some good recommendations for different antivirus here.

Thanks to all for the tips, I'll be having a crack at partitioning the hard drive shortly among a few other ideas you gents have given me. :Thanks3:

DO not Partition HDD on some advice unless you understand why, it is often a complete and utter pain in the arse at later times and with USB HDD's connectivity, SSD expansion it is a moot and pointless activity.

Other observations;

- One of the best sites you can visit for PC software is "Majorgeeks" http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20

- Paid for software has this inherent flaw of needing to "justify itself" and has often proven to "purposefully" generate false positives (BS so you keep buying the crap),

- Moreover the "All in one packages" (AV, Spyware, etc) have historically proven themselves try to do "too much" that they fall over at doing "anything effectively", that is you want a "specific AV application, then you want a specific MALWARE application, etc.

CRITICALLY IMPORTANT every time you install new software make sure you select the "Custom Install" option and then "untick" all the rubbish like "google search bar", "wallies super health benefits search bar", etc!

From Majorgeeks "Best Freeware picks" I personally advise for a porn hound (security level of 7.5-8 in a professional capacity):

- Avast! Free Edition 6.0.1289, http://www.majorgeeks.com/Avast_Home_Edition_d1968.html

- Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.51.2.1300, http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html

- SUPERAntiSpyware 5.0.1118 Final, http://majorgeeks.com/SUPERAntiSpyware_d5116.html

- SpywareBlaster 4.4, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2859

- WinPatrol 20.5.2011.1, http://www.majorgeeks.com/WinPatrol_d3380.html

After this I use FireFox with NoScript!

That is the baseline for the pornfan and will be very robust but only a 7.5-8 security rating!

Based upon a lot of experience, here are some of my top advices:

1: Your laptop WILL suck in a lot of dust and cause it to overheat and under-perform. Remove the back panel and use a airgun on low pressure or one of those cans with compressed air in them and blow out all the dust from your laptop, pay particular attention to fans and heat-sinks. Use your fingers to secure the fans while doing this so they don't spin up, this will break them.

2: Upgrade your HDD to an SSD. I recomend Intel 510 120GB excellent performance, reliability and decent size. Big overall performance-boost.

3: Keep operating system and programs/games on the internal HDD (SSD if you updraged). Everything else goes on external drives (general storage, videos, pictures etc.) I recommend the Western Digital MyPassport USB 3.0 model. High performance, portability(no need for power-plug) and good price, size is up to you. This makes reformatting and keeping your laptop sharp a breeze instead of a nightmare.

4: Do not install software you don't need. Use advanced/custom mode when installing software and untick everything you're not going to use.

5: Get a proper wireless mice. This one increases your own performance and comfort more than the laptops but anyway a must have.

Mate,

As most people have already said.

Ensure you have a quality antivirus and firewall app

I use AVG works like a treat.
