Not safe at all.

Some bad stories on the board. Use the search function.

Perhaps they are somewhat unsecure, after all they're more of a deterrent than anything. If they really want to get into it, they can. But I've used a lot of these safes in the past, all over the world and never had an issue.

Use common sense (and a little paranoia): Don't be flashy, like showing anyone (like a BF for example) that you have a ton of cash, jewelry or a laptop in your room. Be discreet, lock up everything valuable in the safe before you go out. If you come back to the room with a companion, avoid opening the safe. If you're in LOS or PI, don't be flashy when out on the town - try to blend in - otherwise you might get someone following you back to the hotel and figuring out what room you're in.

When I use them, the safe is always locked if I'm not in the room and should I have a BF in the room, I never open the safe.

Good luck!

This video is a fraud! The safe has been modified to allow it to be opened from the outside by hitting it. This modification is shown in jojomecanic's video. If you are concerned test it to see if it has been modified before you use it. I doubt that many (if any) have been modified. Do a search on this forum and you will not find many reports of people having stuff taken from them.

If you have a large amount of cash I think it is best to open a Thai account and put your money into it. You then have easy access to it. The advantage of this is that you do not need to carry around a lot of cash. If you run out during the night you just stop at an ATM.

At the end of the day nothing is secure. Sure someone can break into the safe, but because there is a video on youtube that shows how to break into a safe does that mean you should keep your money in a drawer in your room? Let's use some common since. I like to stay in rooms that have a safe in the room. I feel more secure than leaving my money at the front desk because at the front desk anybody standing there can see what you have when you open it to get out some money.

Does a safe in the room mean that I am completely safe from ever getting robbed? Common since says of course not, but it's better than nothing. What are your other options really. Hide your money in the room? Hide your money in your luggage? Hide your money in between the bed? There is no place you can hide cash and be completely secure that nobody can steal it. Better to have the safe in the room and use it than to just keep it out and exposed. Carrying it around isn't exactly the best thing either. The only thing I would suggest is that you have multiple sources to cash. Cash, ATM, and such. This way if one gets stolen they don't get everything you have.

No safe is 100% safe whether it's an in-room safe or one at the reception desk. I prefer an in-room safe for the convenience of locking up my passport, small amount of cash, laptop, & camera. I really don't want to be hassled going to the reception desk every time I need to get something out of the safe. I've read way too many horror stories on this site about how many people have been a victim of a safe theft at both reception and in the room. My biggest fear is returning to my room and finding out my safe was broken into and my passport is gone. That's why the most important thing to me when choosing a hotel is to find one with the best security within my price range. Before I choose a hotel, I do the best job I can researching the hotel's reputation and management running the hotel, because it only takes one dishonest employee to ruin your vacation.

To me, the small in-room safe is to keep the BG that you brought back to the room out of your shit. This way you can pass out and the only thing she is walking out with is the pile of 1 baht coins on your nightstand and your smelly boxers. Other then that the safe is to easy to break into if somebody has time to do it.

I never use the safe, I lock it when I arrive, so it looks like it is being used, but I hide stuffs in "places" can't be too specific about it, but in fact the safe has never been broken into and no stuff hidden has been stolen. Well maybe the safe has been opened when I was not here, but then it has also been closed again and the code hasn't been changed since I open it again before check out.
