I've only ever seen them in expensive restaurants such as those in Walking St. They don't sell them in the Smelly Market or on the stall down by the pier so don't expect any bargains.

Had lobster a couple of time at the restaurant corner second - soi 9. Picked my own from the display where they are marked with price of the day and they'll cook or grill to your liking. Remember price as decent.

One of my favorite seafood restaurants that has excellent lobsters and rock lobsters is in Jomtien, down Jomtien Beach Rd nearly to the end. It is called Suttangrak's. Here is the website. http://www.suttangrak.com/ Just a bit farther and at then end of Jomtien Beach Rd just as it turns to the left, is Pupen Seafood. Also excellent.

The best seafood in Pattaya is at Vientianne on Pattaya Thai just west of Sukhumvit by about 500 meters.

Finally, someone recommends the best seafood joint in town!

I like king seafood too but I think that Vientiane just edges it as it is better value for money. Rock lobster is reasonably priced as is their kung pao (bbq large prawns) both sold by the kilo and served with nam jim (spicy seafood dipping sauce).

You can get your lobster or prawns cooked anyway you like 'em but to tell you the truth, I am adicted to the hot, salty, sour taste of nam jim with my fresh sweet seafood. And Vientiane's nam jim is the best I've tasted!

If you have yet to try it, I would also recommend The Montien Hotel's Verandah Cafe for their Friday night seafood & bbq buffet. Lots of rock lobster, prawns, oysters, mussels, squid, fish, steak, lamb, chicken and pork bbq'd to your liking as well as cold cuts, salads, soups and hot dishes. They also do some great desserts including a deep fried ice cream. Cost is approx. 800b but you gotta be hungry to do it justice! Take your tilac and she'll lub you long time for taking her!!!

Perhaps you could be a little adventurous and head south to Bangsaray. Not tourist prices and very Thai. The name is Rimhad and it is the end seafood restaurant before the Bangsaray beach. Prices are good, clientele include many Navy guys, and the Rock Lobster tails are by far the best in the area. Enjoy !!

I usually eat rock lobster at Nam Sing on 2nd road. They have a decent variety of fresh seafood, but they never seem to have fresh king lobster when I go there.

The price runs a little high, around 2000BHT for two people, but we eat lots of them lobsters. If we ate normal portions it would probably be around the 1500 mark.

I really enjoyed Pupen's at the end of jomtiem. I prefer places full of thais as i feel i'm getting better value for money. A thai friend took my wife and i to a place called the view near the ambassador. Great lobster but i'm sure it was pricey.Thankfully she got the bill!

Interesting topic. I was actually gonna ask about this as well then i read this. I've been to Thailand before but it was ages ago and i didn't have any lobster back then. Now i figures they must be all over the place and cheap but apparently not? Why is that?

There are two locations for Mum Aroi (one on 3rd Road and one at the ass end of Naklua right on the water) and my girl loves the seafood here. We actually prefer the atmosphere at the one on 3rd road a little better. We've eaten at both King Seafood (girl said fish wasn't fresh) and Vientenae (not impressed). I plan on trying the Hilton lunch seafood lunch buffet they do on Fridays (300 Baht according to BM Tequila Reef - I think it goes to 800 Baht at night).

Be aware that the lobster that you get here is a warm water fish and as such lacks the texture and flavour of it's cold water counter part.

I have eaten it in Patts at two places. On Soi Buakhou walk North past LK Metro and Club Blu and walk past Pook Bar (Lady boys) on your right. It is on the left before the markets and is on a corner with fish tanks as an easy find. There are no live lobsters here (maybe if you ordered and give them notice.) They have a menu of six or seven ways you can have them at 1200 Baht a kilo, frozen.) Three big iced down oysters with dipping sauces are a order seconds at 100 Baht a plate.

On Monday nights Cherry's Restaurant offers a seven course seafood meal including Rock Lobster 1, and Prawn two on a plate. Followed by a whole lobster smothered in a cheesy sauce for 495 Baht, maybe 515 Baht now. It is worth doing with nice surrounding. Not A1 but good value with bread basket, sorbett (spelling) soup, salad bar, desert and coffee. easy on the salad bar as it is a big meal.

The best Lobster in Pattaya is at Pixie's restaurant. I am lucky enough to be married to Pixie and I am her only customer. We head down to the fish markets at Nagua (Pattaya North) and buy live Mud Crabs and occasionally a lobster. Last time the live lobster was 1800 Baht a Kilo. When you get to the western end of the fish markets turn left and walk to the ocean and head north again, When you cannot go further you will see a white shed on your right. The little tasty buggers swim around in there. Pixie once home drops them in fresh water and after a while it makes them sick and they get rid of a lot of gunk. Then it is into the freezer for half an hour. They are docile when you drop them into the boiled salted water. When the water boils again 8 to 10 minutes we do it by site.

We have an icy salt water slurry standing by made from a cut out 6 litre water bottle. We like to cool the Lobster quickly as it stops the cooking process.

Open the icy beer and have fresh bread sticks and Pixie dipping sauce standing by.

I promise a taste of Thailand you will never forget.

... The Montien Hotel's Verandah Cafe for their Friday night seafood & bbq buffet. Lots of rock lobster, ... Cost is approx. 800b but you gotta be hungry to do it justice! Take your tilac and she'll lub you long time for taking her!!! ...

The problem with the Montien is their service and their attempt to reduce the amount of lobster that any one customer eats.

My wife and I were weekly Montien buffet visitors ... starting back when the buffet was under 450b?. Two months ago is the last time we went. We have no plans to go again.

As to your taking your "tilac" ... it isn't something I would do. Unless it is your spouse or long term gf who you are used to eating with around many other foreigners, the "tilac" will be extremely uncomfortable and will eat about 30b worth of food and be full. I've seen it happen too many times. But, up to you.

IMO, the better buffet now is around 1000-1100b at the Centara Grand in Naklua. Better quality, better service, more food choices, but TERRIBLE parking. Parking was one of the great benefits of Montien.

Update ... February 18, 2012:

In December we went to the Centara Grand and has the most disappointing dinner. We were shocked at the poor selection on the buffet. We know that it was due to a special event at the hotel, but doesn't negate the disappointment.

Two nights ago, we decided to try Montien again and see if it had improved.

The service is still bad - even though one of the "big" managers was in the dining room. I'll never understand why they can't hire staff with better attitudes and concern toward guests. The "big" manager that I mentioned was at a table with a vip guest and actually stood up to take the plates off of our table because he noticed his staff wasn't doing it. :(

The lobster was SUPERB! It was fresh and plump. Skip the already cooked line and get over any shyness you have. Hand the chef an empty plate and tell him - "7 lobsters please". Don't bat an eye - they will take the plate after feigning mild shock and grill what you ask. Do that as many times as you need. After the first time, they don't flinch.

(Remember, it is ALL YOU CAN EAT ... and that includes Lobster, Shrimp, Squid, Crab).

Everything was good tonight. Wife also had salmon which she said was excellent. Montien is known for its penang -- the flavor rates as one of the best I have ever tasted.

They also improved the chocolate ice cream they provide ... it was not bitter as before, but a much smoother and more flavorful mix.

If they could only maintain this quality, we would again become regular customers.

For me the best lobster is served at Tunkay seafood. This is the first one in Walking Street next to silver star 3 gogo.

If it flies, floats or fucks - it will be cheaper to rent !

I love my lobster (crayfish in Australia)

As previously said the colder the waters

the better the taste. I skindived for

them in my younger years in the southern

waters of Australia.

On my trips to Patts I have searched for seafood

restaurants and found lobsters more expensive

in Patts than in Melbourne Australia. Again as

stated in previous topics 1800bht a kilo thats

$60aud and thats at a market.

And it is not just Lobster that seems expensive to me

but all seafood, prawns mussels etc.

At the moment I can buy lobster in Oz for $35 a kilo

King Prawns $20, and mussels $5 a kilo so when I visit

Patts I kinda baulk at paying the prices asked.

Sad part is the lobster here tastes very ordinary compared to Oz cold water species also.

First on the list when I go back for a visit is a lobster and a kilo of kingies, oh washed down with Tooheys New.
