Geek Thread - what computer setup do you have?

How much did this set you back in pantip?

Anyone got any recommendations on where to buy a new desktop?

Around 60k (including a very fast 128gb SSD that I bought later).

I could save around 20k if I had taken cheaper alternatives for cooler, PSU, video card, SSD and sound card...and still have a top performance PC.

The best shop I found at pantip is M2Power located on the 3rd floor. Best prices, friendly staff. Ask for what you want (write down on a paper), some components are not shown on their price list but they can send someone to get it in 15 minutes somewhere near. But double check if the price is really what they tell you at first, they're a bit confused. Sometimes they make mistakes and tell you a price 200-300b cheaper than it really is. If you find cheaper parts in other shops they can usually give you a discount to match.

The other shop I recommend is Compute & More on 4th floor and it's aimed for upscale/enthusiast parts. The prices are a bit higher, so I only recommend buying there for parts that you can't find anywhere else (I bought my sound card there, and later the SSD).

The prices at Pantip can be up to 60% cheaper than in Tuk Com Pattaya, so it's definitely worth it if you're planning to build a whole system like me.

The number of screens will depend on how many video output you will have from your video cards. I think every decent card has at least 2 outputs.

So you can either buy 2 video cards (be sure that your motherboard supports SLI/Crossfire which means 2 video cards at the same time) or buy a single card with 4 outputs.

Will you be playing games? If yes, then you will need a powerful rig.

According to this website the GTX 680 can run 4 monitors at once: http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-680-review/5

Be sure to have all the outputs converters, like displayport > hdmi for example.

And of course, have all the other components to be powerful on the same level as the graphics cards. This system will kinda suck if you put a poor processor on it.

I'd do it for a nominal fee as I build all my desktop/mid tower computers but I'm in the US. If you could figure out how that would work, I'd trade the labor for tips on how to make money online. The locals described above would probably do a great job, as it's not that hard.

My computers:

#1 Mid tower

Generic easy to work in case. Adequate power supply.

Gigabyte Motherboard w/ Intel Quad Core CPU, 8 GB of DDR3 RAM.

4 Western Digital Black Label hard drives, 650-750 GB. Use Robocopy jobs and Dropbox instead of Windows backups except for post initial Windows install.

Radeon video card supporting 2 monitors.

OS: Most drives multiboot, Windows 2003 Server, Windows 7, Windows 2008 Server, Windows Server 2012 running as a virtual machine eval. W2k3 Server is by far my preference among supported Microsoft Operating Systems. So far Windows 2012 Server looks nice. Hopefully Microsoft won't fluff up the User Interface before release.

Just added a 2nd monitor and am now hooked on multiple monitors.

#2 Mid tower

Same case w/ Gigabyte motherboard, this one supporting only a dual core CPU but it runs very well. The rest as above but just 1 monitor.

Laptop: Lenovo, WD Black Label 500GB drive w/ multiboot as above. Windows 2008 server runs like a slug w/ only 1 GB RAM. Virtualization not supported, otherwise a very nice laptop.

Well in this case you could save some cash on the video card. The GTX 680 would be for gaming in high resolutions.

For just non-graphical work you can purchase cheaper ones. A GTX 560ti will have 4 outputs depending on the brand, for 1/3 of the price of a GTX 680.

If you want we can go together to tukcom to take a look.

My first computer. Was writing "adult" software even back in 1970, though the whole paper tape storage thing required quite a bit of stamina.

Today's travel kit is an iPad 3. Can use VNC, SSH, or Teamviewer to hop on the big computers back on the farm.

My 2.5 year old Acer 4738G has a graphics related MB fault common to that model. It has an i5 and an ATI Radeon card HD5470. It's short lifespan pisses me off. Its' probably due to gaming and high temperature issues.

I see lots of old (7 or so years) dell and hp laptops for sale at giveaway prices. I think they have lived so long because they have slow and therfore cool CPUs and didn't have GPUs .I wouldn't be surprised if they lived for another 7 years. No HDMI out so no use to me.

I need to buy a new laptop. This time it will be an i3 or even a Celeron with lousy intel graphics. At the moment longevity is more important than speed.

Is there anyone out there that has used or owns a laptop with a Celeron 1007U chip? Are they useable or just a pain? I mostly used my laptop for MSOffice, the web, and watching movies. HDMI output is critical. Could a Celeron with an Intel HD Graphics 3000 output movies to my TV OK?

Whoa, paper tape - that brings back memories. Our high school inherited a IBM mainframe from the Navy, complete with punch-card stations, 2 honeywell terminals with paper tape, and a refrigerated room for the computer and huge diskpacks. NEVER remove a diskpack until it's completely spun down...made that mistake...once.

Same here - I can recommend also Textastic as a great editor with built-in SFTP; probably like it more than Diet Coda. Also, get a good wireless keyboard. I use the Zagg Profolio+ case...the best of the keyboard cases, imho.

Oh no, you're mistaken. That's the bill.  ;)

Home office system - 1 year old 27" iMac, 2 year old 15 Macbook Pro, iPad Retina (3), 6TB of NAS, a couple AppleTV2 for display and an Alienware M11x...in some closer somewhere. Likely in that closet is long with an old (still working) 1.67Mhz Powerbook from 2005 and a Newton 2100 from 1998. And the Newton still works too.
